doTERRA Oils comes to Studio Bella
Last night we experienced a great “Medicine Cabinet Makeover” class at the salon. Anthony and Lauri LaPorta came in and shared their Essential Oil knowledge with us. To say it was interesting was an understatement! We learned how to cure and/or alleviate common ailments such as asthma and headaches and also how to help people with much more complex issues like neuropathy. After sampling some of the oils we were all quickly becoming believers.
I’m so happy to be able to offer even more opportunities to hook up with Lauri and Anthony to learn more about how to really take a natural approach to wellness. Stay tuned for more information on a date in June that they will return. We will be doing body scans and making our own natural bug repellant!
"I just want someone to do it all for me."
This is something we hear at Studio Bella all the time. People will comment on one of the stylist's makeup, and say "I just wish someone would pick out everything for me and tell me what colors to wear."
Makeup is a very personal thing, in my opinion. I've been fascinated with it's ability to transform, disguise, and even just to lift a mood. I also don't subscribe to brand loyalty when it comes to makeup. There are just way too many choices and when it comes down to it, way too many fabulous products. I could never say that I only use one brand of makeup for everything.
That being said, when I opened Studio Bella I needed a brand that was really comprehensive when it comes to meeting my needs - and I can pretty demanding. I needed a brand that would appeal to everyone, whether they wear a full face of makeup everyday or they just want a little tinted moisturizer. They also had to be easy to use. Not everyone knows how - or even wants to know how - to use a set of makeup brushes. Next up was color, and lots of it. I like a full spectrum of colors offered in a makeup brand, from bold to natural, shimmer to matte, and everything in between. In addition to all of that, it had to be a brand that I trusted, and that stood for something other than money guzzling. I want them to care about what condition my skin is in when I wash the makeup OFF. Lastly, they have to be a brand that my clients don't have to take out a mortgage to stock up on. I'm not sure what the fascination is with paying $100-$500 for cremes and foundations, but that fascination is alive and well, especially in the label-conscious society we are in.
Enter Jane Iredale - the skincare makeup. No preservatives! High quality minerals because they actually care about what we are breathing when applying the powders! No petroleum! Yet, they can accomplish all of this while providing a color palette with amazing, vivid pigments and makeup that has true staying power.
The best part is that at Studio Bella we will be delivering what you have requested, and offering a night every other month where you can come and have a private one on one session where, you guessed it, someone will "just do it all for you". Have your skin tone matched up, see what lip color works best for you and get some application tips as well.
Our first session will be February 13th, from 6-8 and will focus on the steps to a flawless face. There is a $25 booking fee which is fully redeemable in product the night of the event. You'll be so happy you came! Space is limited, so call us soon! 718-227-5010
Fall/Winter 2013: Makeover your Makeup!
The time is now! That mascara you picked up along the way somewhere and can't remember if it's time to toss (6 months old = time to go!), that lip color you've been proudly wearing since 2008, the "safe" eye shimmer that makes you feel like you've made an effort but don't have to try to hard - it's time to be wise and revise! There are so many runway trends this year that are totally wearable and flattering on everyone. A stark contrast to the smokey eye that has been done to DEATH already. Let's pick a few out for you to try. I promise you'll be glad you did!
LIPS:
Wine, wine, wine. Not THAT kind, although a nice glass of red is great by a wintertime fire. Wine lips are IT right now. So many people think wine lips means looking like Morticia Adams, but the reality is there is a wine lip out there for eveyone. Take a look at Jane Iredale's Black Cherry lipgloss (my personal favorite). A soft, pure pigment in a gloss that looks great on pale skin. Not an easy task when it comes to wine lips!
EYES:
The cat eyes are back, but this time it's all about color. Gone are the days of smokey gray and blacked out eyes. Brightening up is perfect for this time of year. Look at the version we love, which uses Jane Iredale Aquamarine Mystikohl with Dawn eyeshadow for the perfect on-trend look that works for the office.
FACE:
Look no further, your go to product for winter is without a doubt Jane Iredale's Full Coverage BB Creme. Packed with vitamin E and aloe for moisture, apple and grapefruit extract for antioxidants and warding off wrinkles, it also provides broad spectrum sun protection with an SPF of 25. Comes in 6 full coverage shades that can be used alone for opacity or mixed with your favorite moisturizer for a lighter look. Keep your skin looking beautiful all winter long.
Come in and see us soon for some makeup advice. Any of our stylists would be happy to spend some time with you and help you make the correct choices for your skin type/tone. See you at the studio!
Studio Bella is located at 3911 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY 10308 718-227-5010 www.studiobellanyc.com
Big. Bouncy. Beautiful.
You know you've said it a million times. Right about 3/4 of the way through your blowout at the salon - "Can I just take you home with me?" or "I could never blow my hair out the way you can!"
This week's Bella Buzz Weekly HAIRspiration addresses a very common quandary. Do stylists have secret powers that translate to amazing blowouts? Well, we certainly have the technique down pat, and we do know our way around a brush and blowdryer. But given the right tools, the best blowout is within your reach!
Brushes. Yes, they really do matter. Large, round brushes are great for volume, but they aren't going to give you those "looks like a curling iron did these" curls. For that you need a much smaller brush. And brushing out your wet hair after a shower with any of these round brushes equals lots of hair being ripped right out unnecessarily, as well as knots left behind. Grab your paddle brush for that!
Products. Yes, they really do matter also. For many people, getting a nice voluminous blowout requires changing the texture of the hair temporarily so that it "holds". That doesn't happen because of your stylists magician hands, it happens because of the products they use.
You should speak to your stylist about the products they are using to achieve specific results on your hair. This week you may be looking for an ultra chic, sleek look, while next week you may want a super sexy curled blowout. Two very different sets of products. Think about your shampoo and conditioner as well! Like I said, styling requires a texture change for most, so this begins with the shampoo. Maybe you need more moisture, more volume, or more vitamins. All of which should be achieved starting with the very first products you put on your hair - shampoo and conditioner.
Blowdryer. VERY IMPORTANT!! Do you need a $250 blowdryer to mimic the salon blowout? Absolutely NOT. Do you need something that does more than whisper some semi-warm air onto your tresses? YES. The perfect blowout requires a combination of hot and cold air. The air coming from the nozzle must be powerful. Given all of that, you also need to familiarize yourself with how to do it correctly without scorching your hair. ASK your stylist for help. Ask if she/he would hold a blowdry class for you and a few friends. I bet they would.
Do those of us working behind the chair at the salon want you to come to us for blowouts over and over? Of course we do. We LOVE what we do and seeing happy clients loving their results. But here's a secret....we want you to love your hair everyday between visits as well. So we are more than happy to share some of our secret weapons with you. A minimal investment into some brushes, products and the right blowdryer can really change how you feel day to day about your hair.
And who doesn't want to feel better about how they look?

Moonstruck!
Ever heard the "old wives tale" that your hair will grow longer if you cut it around the full moon? I have heard it a few times and never paid much attention. But then I met someone who would ONLY cut her twin daughters' hair following this method and let me tell you, these girls have the most beautiful, healthy, long and luscious hair I've seen. Sooooo, maybe it's worth looking more into this! I took the time to do some research, and started asking more people if they had heard of this. Lo and behold, there are entire charts dedicated to when to groom yourself according to the lunar calendar.
According to sources I've consulted, it looks like this Thursday, October 17th is THE day to get your hair cut if you are looking to THICKEN your hair. Even just a trim is supposed to do the trick. If you are looking to GROW your hair - this Saturday the 19th is your day. Again, even just a trim should yield some "lengthy" results.
Is any of this REALLY going to give you thicker, longer, more luxurious hair? I can't say for sure, but the testimonials I have heard and read are pretty impressive, so it certainly seems worth a shot. And you know me, I'm always looking for an excuse to do something fun! So to celebrate this week's full moon, we are going to offer 10% off haircuts this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Remember, if you are looking to thicken up those locks, Thursday is your day. And all of you who swear your hair "never grows", come on in on Saturday. Give us a call at 718-227-5010 to book or visit www.studiobellanyc.com
In the thick of it...
We've all been there. Well, some of us have. That moment when you've spent 45 minutes on root lifting, moussing, and pumping up your locks, giving yourself the BEST blowdry of your life. You learned how to hold the brush, which products to use, and the right techniques for the perfect "sexy blowout". Only to find at the end of your hard work, the ends of your hair are still practically transparent and lifeless. Where did you go wrong? How come Mila Kunis and Lea Michelle don't have this problem? What makes all of those red carpet divas look, well, like divas?
Simple. Extensions.
Read on for this week's Bella Buzz Weekly HAIRspiration with an open mind. Don't balk at the idea. Don't hide in fear over the "umpty-thousand of dollars" price tag. Over the past few years these beauty-boosters have become a much more realistic option for even those with the tightest pocketbooks. "Tape-in" extensions are easy on the hair (i.e., you won't wake up one day with 50% less hair than you started with), reusable, and the best part - NOT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. They are easy for those of you who are like me, and want long hair this month and short hair the next. Oh, and long hair again after that.
Or maybe what you are looking for is simply that full, sexy blowout that mother nature failed to give you enough strands for. Take a look at what these extensions can do for you....
You'll be surprised at how natural they look and feel. And at how incredible they make styling your hair! If you've been considering a change that is not such a big commitment, now is the time to give these a try. Speak to your stylist today about what your options are. Most people going for a little length and volume are looking at a price tag of under $500, which in extension world is a steal! And say goodbye to sitting in the chair for 6 hours to put them in, and 6 hours to take them out. A full head of tape in extensions can usually be done in an hour or less.
You deserve it! I am looking forward to all of the fall transformations we will be performing at Studio Bella for our clients looking to make the change. See you at the Studio!
Just what the doctor ordered....
Welcome to the latest dose of Bella Buzz Weekly HAIRspiration. I want to take some time this week to address an issue that seems to affect a good percentage of clients we see in the studio. This issue has such an easy fix, yet is often overlooked. What is the issue? Simple - one of the most asked questions we get is "how do I get my hair to look the same way that YOU get my hair to look?". Every stylist worth her beauty school smock knows the answer. Chances are your stylist even GIVES you the secret every time you are in the chair. For some unknown reason, however, this "secret" seems to only penetrate through to some, while falling more often than not on deaf ears.
Consider this scenario.... when you ask your doctor what to do about (insert problem here), your doctor will give you an answer. Maybe it's a prescription, maybe it's an exercise. But he/she gives you the answer and you follow through and hopefully said problem goes away. It's no different when you are in the care of your stylist at the salon. There is an entire arsenal of HAIR CARE PRODUCTS (imagine?) that your stylist will graciously instruct you on using so that you can, in fact, recreate the hair you leave your appointment with.
Ironically (or not), much like any other item out there in this world, when it comes to hair care products, you get what you pay for. Maybe you are alarmed by the price tag of the cocktail your stylist just prescribed for you so that you have the healthiest, best looking hair you can have. Understandable. But keep in mind that this cocktail is put together so that the next time you visit the salon, you can avoid needing that deep conditioning treatment because your hair is so dried out from the Suave or (gulp) Pantene that you've been swearing by for years. It is also made to maintain your color in a way that will forever stop the "why do my ends fade so quickly" conundrum. Trust me, using the correct hair care system at home makes a stylists job much easier when you are back in our chair. I promise our retail section is not a giant conspiracy to get you to spend more money. I am doing my part to dispel this awful reputation salon retail has gotten!
Next time you visit your salon for your few hours of pampering getting your color, cut, highlights, glazes, you name it, consider investing in some post-appointment hair care. We spend money on our hair because we want to look good and feel good. Why would you want to spend that money only to spend the 6 weeks between appointments frustrated that the ONLY time you like your hair is when you walk out of the salon?
The answer is directly in front of you. Or behind you, depending on the location of your salon's retail ;) I urge each and every one of you to commit to trying it my way just once. If you can honestly say that you did not see a difference in your hair's look, feel and longevity, your next bottle of Pantene is on me.
"Are you the same blonde he had dinner with last week?"
The above is a quote from a Clairol advertisement in 1966. I attended a seminar last week with the incredibly talented Mark DeBolt (www.markdebolt.com) and he brought up the quote, and the ad, to show just how far we have come in how women feel about coloring their hair. The first time the phrase was put out by Clairol, it was all about women transforming themselves to become more desirable. Women took the time to sit in the salon because the end result was going to please someone else. What a difference almost 50 years makes!
The times may have changed, which leads me to this Bella Buzz Weekly HAIRspiration. Has the question changed? Or has only the tone changed - "ARE you the same blonde he had dinner with last week?" and if so, why should you be?! We live in a fantastic time to be a woman. I have the honor of encountering women everyday who come to me because they are in a constant state of transformation - a new cut, a new color, a few highlights - whatever makes HER feel good about who she is.
Why should celebrities be the only ones with access to a quick boost that you know only comes from a visit to the salon? Granted, Emma Stone's blonde-bombshell-turned-siren-red may be a bit drastic for some, while not drastic enough for some others! Sometimes the most subtle change is all you need to feel like a new person. Talk to your stylist about ALL of the options available to you. At Studio Bella, my team is always commenting on how happy and excited I get when a client comes in ready for a change. I can't help it - there is NOTHING like making someone feel beautiful and good about themselves. And the inspiration I draw from them is a high that can't be matched.
So, what are you waiting for? That cut or color that you've kept tucked in the back corner of your mind is out there waiting for you - make it happen! You know at Studio Bella (www.studiobellanyc.com) your stylist is always there to help you figure it out. See you at the Studio ;)
Soft hair...Soft hues...the "S'Ombre"
Welcome to our first edition of Weekly HAIRspiration - A regular feature of #BellaBuzz that will be shared each week with our fellow fashionistas and the hair obsessed!
Fall is officially knocking on our door, and that means one thing at Studio Bella - time to freshen up those tired summer tresses! The trends are leaning away from blonde on blonde (...on blonde, on blonde) and warming up in a big way. It's all about softness, and dimension.
Adding some rich colors to your hair is an instant facelift, subtracting years instantly. Speak to your colorist about what color(s) are right for your skin tone, and you can be sure that the results will be dramatic in a very natural, flattering way.
Using techniques that are designed to strategically balance the shades of your hair will give new life to any style - long or short.
All of you out there that jumped into a nice, bright ombre last year are more than ready for a change, we know! So give some thought to the "S'Ombre" - a softer, more natural ombre that continues to focus on light and bright ends yet delivers a more natural, warm and rich contrast all around.
The entire Studio Bella team is ready to take this leap with you. Come on in, consult with your stylist and get ready for greatness - Autumn Style!
Success.
I talk to people all day long. There is something about sitting in a hairdresser's chair (or laying on an eyelash table) that prompts people to let down the walls they've been holding up all day. I take this unofficial position as therapist pretty seriously, and I don't repeat things that are told to me in confidence, and I don't judge anyone for the inner thoughts they choose to share with me.
The themes seem to be pretty consistent, however. Kids, spouses, jobs. And success. Everyone is looking for that moment that they feel they've achieved success. In anything, really. Sometimes it's success in getting their toddler to not cry when left with the sitter (mom's need girl time, too!). Sometimes it's success in finding those few hours for a date night with their significant other. Sometimes it's success in landing a new job, finishing a big project at their current job, or starting a new business. Success is tricky. Once you achieve it, you can bet a new goal is lurking right around the corner.
I once read a quote that I love - "Humility. As soon as you think you have it, you've lost it." Success is very similar. As soon as you think you're done, you're not.
Over the past few weeks I've defined and redefined what it means to be successful. And I am pretty sure that I've realized what I've always known. Success is never about me. You. I.* Success truly is about the people you can bring along with you. The people you spend your time with, teaching and learning from. The people you celebrate victories with, and discuss failures with. Because there WILL be failures. But being surrounded by people you trust and love and share that with? That's success.
How Fattening Is Your Summer Cocktail?
Life. Changing.
I pride myself on finding a pretty good balance between luxury vs necessity. While my breath catches at the site of the new Chanel spring line or at an amazing avant garde hairstyle, I do realize that there are more people who don’t care as much about fashion than people who do. I also realize that while the rush experienced from purchasing a brand new Louie is something I wish everyone could feel (que the sharp inhale, hold breath, deep exhale), I am under no delusions that spending $2000 on a bag is either responsible or necessary.
HOWEVER. Last summer after “doing it” to client after client I got to experience “it” myself firsthand. The only words to describe are: Life. Changing. What is “it”? Keratin. Say goodbye to hair that grows like a chia pet at the first sign of humidity. Now YOU can be that person everyone looks at and thinks to themselves, how does she do it? This is it. The splurge that may have started in the luxury column but quickly dug it’s heels firmly at the top of NECESSITY.
Do it. Thank me later.
Beautiful updo by Taylor :)
Products, products, products
One of the number one question we hear at the Studio is "how can I make my hair look the way it looks when you do it?" The answer is so simple. And not listened to often enough. PRODUCTS!! Hairdressers need the right tools to create what we do, so how can you possibly replicate it at home without those tools? When the doctor writes a prescription you fill it, right? And that's hopefully for a temporary problem. Your hair is in your head everyday, all day. Treat it well and you will love the results :)
