A Sister’s Guide on How To College
before the start of the semester
if you can, schedule at least one break in between your classes so you have time to do homework – this has been a big lifesaver for me.
get to know your advisor – it’ll make working with them easier and they’ll be able to help you better.
make sure your class schedule is one you’re comfortable with. if you’re taking too many harder classes, or all writing intensive classes, it may be a more difficult/stressful semester. be realistic about how much you can handle at once, because it may look easy on paper, but it won’t be when you have three tests, a project, and two five-page papers all due at once.
when making my schedule i like to rank each class i need to take in terms of expected difficulty/work put in from 1-5 (for example: world civ is an estimated 4, art history is 2, and Pilates is 0 since it only requires my time in-class, and the total for my classes is 16). add ‘em up and see if your schedule is too much/too little - you can also do this for past semesters to put it into perspective.
before the first day of class, take some time to tidy up your room and workspace really well. you won’t have as much time later and it’ll make you feel better + less stressed.
just try to get things squared away in general before your break ends
write down some SMART goals for the semester (”I will make an A in Biology by studying everyday”) and stick them somewhere you’ll see them daily (binder, desk, etc)
at the beginning of the semester
download this app – I don’t use it to keep up with my actual homework, but you can add in all your classes so that if you forget what’s next/where you’re going it’s all right there in your notification center.
after your first day of class go through all your syllabi and put any major due dates in your planner – you may want to do this in pencil in case dates change.
find your perfect study spot. for me it changes semester by semester- right now (my favorite) it’s a lounge that no one ever goes to with a couch, desks, AND most of my teachers offices are right down the hall which is super convenient.
if you’re taking any online classes, stop by your teacher’s office during office hours and introduce yourself.
a lot of studyblrs say to sit on the front row for better focus, and that may work for you, but I focus best in the very back. bottom line- just because it works for someone else doesn’t mean it’ll work best for you, so sit where you want and do what’s best for you.
make eating breakfast – even if it’s on the way to school – a habit.
I like to put together a grades spreadsheet in excel (I use this template) so I can keep up with what I’m making and gauge how well I’ll have to do on upcoming assignments.
introduce yourself to someone in each class. you don’t have to be bffs, but you’ll be glad to have a friend to let you borrow their notes.
have a positive attitude from the beginning. that’s honestly half the battle
throughout the semester
start a list of things you know will be on the test/exam. anytime your teacher spends a lot of time emphasizing something or straight up tells you it will be on the exam, write it down. make it into a study guide.
daily/weekly/whenever you get a chance review (and rewrite) your notes. do this as soon as plausible after you take them so that you have the best chance of remembering what they’re talking about. i like to do this while i’m waiting for the next class to start.
while you’re reviewing your notes, go ahead and make flash cards of important terms. doing them as you go along means that you can spend more time actually quizzing yourself and less time making them right before the exam.
get to bed/wake up around the same time everyday & don’t sleep in too much on weekends – that’s what makes mondays so rough.
try not to exist only on red bull and chips, k?
take breaks!! hang out with your friends!!! talk to your family!! eat without a textbook in your hand!! school is not the most important thing out there
if you’re struggling, put in the extra effort as soon as possible. seriously. don’t wait until finals week.
before midterms
go through EVERYTHING – your backpack, folders, binders, all of it. toss what you don’t need (that sandwich from a month ago) and reorganize what you do (those bio flashcards that ended up with your history notes)
make a study group and split up the material to make a collective study guide & then quiz each other from it.
review your SMART goals and see if you’ve kept up with them/if the still apply. adjust according.
by this time you’ve learned what does or doesn’t work as far as supplies, studying, note taking goes. if there’s anything you can readjust to make the rest of the semester go more smoothly, do that now.
you still have time to pull a bad grade back up – figure out what you can do to do that (study more regularly, talk to the teacher, find some online resources, etc)
have a dance party because you’re halfway there!
before/during finals week
if your planner doesn’t have a daily view, draw out a schedule of the week and break down hour by hour what you’ll be doing/studying and stick it in your planner with a paper clip.
i like to schedule my days like this the morning-of since its hard to know what your days going to look like in advance.
give yourself some slack so you don’t get stressed out when something takes longer than expected.
don’t forget to give yourself breaks – the pomodoro method works well for me
get plenty of rest! staying up all night to cram is not worth it. that extra sleep will help much more than going over your notes a million times.
when you go into an exam, think only about that exam. don’t worry about all that you have to do later.
eat a light snack before exams and bring a drink into exams (i do chocolate milk because it’s more filling than water) for energy.
if you have a lot of papers/projects, do them in the library and not at home. during exam week i stay about an hour after class everyday and i’m so much more productive in that one hour than i would be in three hours at home.
I believe in free education, one that’s available to everyone; no matter their race, gender, age, wealth, etc… This masterpost was created for every knowledge hungry individual out there. I hope it will serve you well. Enjoy!

IF THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY!!
hello!! i’ve been getting quite a lot of asks about bullet journaling, so i decided to make this post to share some tips + information about it!
what is a bullet journal?
a bullet journal is a super flexible and customisable all-in-one system that allows you to quickly organise information
it can combine a planner, to-do list, diary, notebook + much more!
the official bullet journal website (i strongly recommend you go through this, it’s very informative - but don’t feel limited to the ideas on the website!)
how does it help with productivity?
simple, effective information logging that only takes a few minutes
you can work out what system works best and helps you be as productive as possible
keeps all your information in one place - increased organization helps you be more productive!
creates a habit of planning time
allows you to see all the tasks you have to complete
you can use it together with the pomodoro method! next to each task, draw out one box to represent one pomodoro, and cross them out as you go
it forces you to want to finish tasks because they’re written down somewhere
gives you a sense of achievement as you go through each task!
how do i pick a notebook?
picking a suitable notebook is really important: you’re going to want to get a notebook that you will want to use or bullet journaling can become pointless!
consider size first - if you’re going to be carrying it around everywhere, go for something light, portable and durable
if you’re going to be leaving it at home most of the time/want more space to work with, get something larger
consider getting a notebook with a pocket in the back if you want to carry around post-its and the like!
do you work better with lines/grids/blank paper? i’d say grid paper is the quickest and tidiest to work with, but if you want more freedom with your bullet journal, you could try lined/blank paper.
remember, there’s no specific notebook for a bullet journal - go for something you want to use and are comfortable with!!
here are some examples of different notebooks used:
blank paper (1) (2) (3)
dotted paper (1) (2) (3)
lined paper (1) (2) (3)
grid paper (1) (2) (3)
getting started!!
a few things to consider as you begin your venture into bullet journaling:
key:
the bullet journal website goes through how you can use different symbols for different forms of information e.g. box for tasks, triangle for events
you can develop your own key that is more relevant to your life and schedule! for example, you might want to use a clock symbol for a deadline/an exclamation mark for an assessment date
some examples of bullet journal keys here and here!
index:
i’d recommend using the first page in your journal as an index/contents page so that you can keep track of where your important pages are (like study schedules, book lists, assessment dates)!
colour-coding:
this obviously works better for some people than others. i like to keep my colour scheme limited to 2 or 3 colours because colours don’t really work for me - but if you want to use a colour-coding system, go ahead!
some colour-coding insp here!
prioritising system:
i personally use exclamation marks next to urgent tasks and swirls for school-unrelated chill time things
but you can develop a system that works best for you and your timetable!
check out this system here to give you inspiration!
what kind of things can i put in it?
a calendar if you want!
you can draw one
or print one out!
study plans/schedules
cute water trackers
a “don’t break the chain” page to create good study habits!
motivational quotes/doodles
photographs
receipts
tickets!
films to watch
book list
music to check out later
shopping lists
writing/art inspiration
+ even more ideas!!
general tips from me
split tasks into sub-tasks as much as possible!!
e.g. instead of just writing “revise for history test” write “make flashcards on the cold war”, “do practice paper questions from chapter 3″ etc. underneath!
this is probably my favourite part about using a bullet journal: making one big task into several smaller ones lets me see clearly what i have to get done and makes me feel more accomplished as i move through a task
also, it lets me plan how to finish a task before i start it
limit yourself to how many tasks you can migrate a day - this stops you from putting things off for another day and forces you to get at least a specific amount of work done each day
this sounds dumb but figure out what is the most satisfying way to cross out a task
you can tick, shade in, highlight or put a cross through your tasks, so try out some methods to figure out what you feel is the most satisfying!
sometimes when i’m brain-dead and losing the will to live i just tell myself “another hour and i can colour that box in. won’t that be the best feeling” and then i get through it
don’t overcomplicate it!
you don’t have to use a lot of colour or different fonts if you don’t want to
but if you want to do that and it works for you, go ahead!
my advice would be to develop your own style of bullet journaling and stick to it - consistency will avoid wasting time on deciding how your spread is going to look like today!
inspiration from some of my fav spreads!
super colourful
functional and looks great
post-its + pastel!
using washi tape
minimalist and simple i love this
simple but so pretty
tidy and artsy
+ bullet journal tag for even more insp!
i really really hope this was helpful! feel free to tag me in your bullet journal posts with #hi xuanlin and i’ll definitely reblog them :^) and if you ever want to talk to me about bullet journals/anything at all, my ask is always open!!

How I Make Notecards! :)
After my post about notecards and midterms, a lot of you guys sent me messages about how I make them, what kind of cards or rings I use, etc. Soooo, without further ado…
I’ll be using my Chemistry notecards as an example since they’re probably the most well done AND they’re even color coded!
STEP 1: Gather materials (that sounds really science-class-procedure-y)
I personally use unruled index cards from Target (they’re like $0.49 per pack and really good quality) and two different writing utensils…usually some sort of marker and then my trusty Pilot G2. I like for my notecards to be on a ring (good for storage but I take them off when I’m quizzing myself), so I’ll need one of those and a hole punch (mine’s Swingline and I LOVE it).
STEP 2: I make a list of what I need on my notecards and then start labeling the front side of the index cards. My Chemistry notecards are just material from my 1st semester, so I make them as I go along, but you can make them all at once too! (wouldn’t really recommend it, it ends up being really time consuming)
STEP 3: Once I’m done labeling the front side with concepts such as Molarity, questions like “What is an aqueous solution?,” diagrams like Solids VS Liquids VS Gases on a molecular basis, etc., I go back to actually write out the content on the back of the cards. I define words, copy practice problems, draw diagrams, and the like.
STEP 4: When all the notecards are done, I break out a pack of colored notecards to act as divider pages. I have a color-coding guide:
STEP 5: Since my notecards are for the entire 1st semester, I take some plain white notecards to use as dividers for different chapters. For this, I cut up a small sheet of paper or an index card, fold it in half, and tape it to the right edge of the card, so that it acts as a tab.
STEP 6: After all that is done, I punch holes in the upper left corner and put them on the ring so that the order isn’t messed up (my Chem notecards are actually numbered though, so it’s not an issue)
STEP 7: Then I make my cover! I like this part the most. I cut out a piece of scrapbook paper so it’s 3in X 5in, and I punch a hole in the upper left corner. I tape a sticky note that’s been folded in half on the center (if the paper has a subtler pattern you can just write directly on it) and I use a marker/pen to write the class and/or subject.
STEP 8: Finally, put that on the ring and then you’re done! I flip through my notecards before major tests to get a brief overview of the content before going to my notes/the textbook, or I take them off the ring to quiz myself. Study them however you’d like :)
This was my first tutorial-y post…I hope I helped and answered your questions!
Greetings!
Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Rachael, and I’m new to the studyblr community. I started this studyblr with the hope that it would help me better organize myself so I can succeed in my classes. I'm working on my transfer degree right now, and I’m planning on going into music therapy (emphasis in child psychology).
That being said, please like/reblog if you’re an active studyblr! I’m hoping to find some new people to follow for some study inspiration, bullet journal tips, and anything else that may prove helpful.
Thanks! ❤R

finally got my bullet journal set up for the new year!!
OKAY GUYS LISTEN UP so there’s this website called slader.com and it has EVERY FUCKING ANSWER TO EVERY TEXTBOOK EVER. It has answers AND shows you ALL the work so you can understand it (or be a slacker). This website has literately saved my calculus grade. It even has free tutors if you need the extra help. Guys, it’s free to register and it will save your life
Always me when I’m having an economics test…
So I’ve been asked a few times to post some pages of my bullet journal…so here they are!!!
First off, I use the leuchtturm1917 squared in black to journal. I also use stabilo 88 pens, muji gel ink pens in black, staedtler triplus fineliner pens in pastel, staedtler pigment liner sketch pens, pigma micron pens, and zebra mildiners in pastel.
My index page. My notebook comes with an index page which is awesome!! I use this for quick reference if I am looking for something and I don’t know what page it’s on.
My “end of 2015″ page. I use this page for reference of an overview of what the next couple of months look like. I put important dates I need to remember as well as a couple of goals I am going to try to meet! You can use this for a semester, a year, a month, whatever.
A monthly view. I do this for every month. At the beginning of the month, I fill this out with due dates, work schedule, events, appointments, etc. I color code too 😎 (see bottom left corner of picture)!
A weekly view. This I do at the beginning of every week. I refer to my monthly view and designate tasks per day to make sure I am on top of my homework and other things (chores, vitamins, etc.). I put tasks in squares and events, work, appointments in circles! I also add a water log beneath each day and mark every time I drink a glass.
Breakfast places in my town that I NEED to try. This is self explanatory. 😜
A habits log which has been adapted from @studyfulltime! I don’t really do it anymore because it is time consuming, but it is an incredible way to make sure you are taking care of yourself. I mark the food I eat, how much water I drink, my expenses, my exercise log, and my habits. I do them per week!
I call this my motivation station! I made this page in case of emergency and if I’m having a breakdown or something. I refer to it when I need motivation or just uplifting. I also put a self care list since that is just as important to me as motivation!
In case of relaxation/boredom. If I have free time I tend to do well…nothing. 😁 So I made this page to refer to when I have free time. I also have a page for Christmas gift ideas. So when an idea for someone sparks, I write it down so I don’t forget it!
Date ideas/TV shows to watch (which sometimes go hand in hand tbh 😂). In this page I filled in a bunch of date ideas for me and the boyf as well as a list of TV shows that are on my watch list.
Books to read/movies to watch. I color coded movie and book. I also mark if they are available at the library or on Netflix. As I watch/read I’ll fill in the little hearts. ❤️
That’s all! At least all of importance. I hope you guys can use this to inspire your bullet journals! Also, my ask is always open, so if you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask! 💕
xx Jess
As we get closer to the end of the year, it’s a good idea to think about what you can do to make your 2016 be as great as possible. Whether your normal end-of-year routine consists of making a long list of resolutions or you keep writing last year’s date, there’s no reason you can’t make next year everything you want and more.
Resolutions: one of the most common traditions, a sort of ritual that never seems to fail us as February rolls around. Making New Year’s Resolutions can be a helpful exercise, but there’s a lot to keep in mind in order to ensure success. According to the University of Scranton, 33% of people fail in their resolution by the end of January, and only 46% make it to July (x). What can you do to maximize your chances of success?
Set reasonable goals - your goals should be positive and specific
SMART goal setting
psychology behind goals
how long it takes to form a habit
HabitRPG
Stay positive - you are not defined by your mistakes
common failures to avoid

Every year, the most common resolutions include the usual suspects: eating well, getting healthy or fit, losing weight, getting better grades or doing better at work. If this is one of yours (and chances are, it is!) then here are some specific tips on how to make that resolution work for you.
Exercise - no matter if it’s 30 minutes a day or your 100th marathon
when you don’t like exercise
handy tips to following through
workout playlists!!

Healthier weight - it benefits your body and your health to be at a smart weight

Finally, a studyblr guide to 2016 couldn’t be complete without one simple recommendation. Use the new year to get back on track with your studies, continue your success, and develop great new habits! There’s no better time to get out ahead and learn new skills that will help you in 2016 and beyond.
