Almond Blossom by Fiona Benson
Watching the campus slowly shift from summer into fall is so nice. There are so many beautiful trees on my campus, it's wonderful to see.

The scope of the work required for my chosen field is endlessly amusing to me. It ranges from complex mathematics and statistical analysis, all the way to just... looking at plants. On any given day, my assignments can include large mathematical problem sets, creating computer code, or just going for a walk and writing down what kinds of trees I find. It's very fun, and has remarkably good balance.
I'm slowly starting to adjust to the little routines of university; realizing when the best study times are, figuring out when my labs are, knowing when I need to have my weekly assignments done by. It's a lot of work, but it's proving to be highly rewarding thus far.
Study because you can...
I've already found my favourite study spots on campus. You can't go wrong with a nice view of the river, even if it's different from the one I'm used to.

University is proving to be a bigger challenge than I anticipated. It's very intense, and I'm already starting to struggle with the volume of things I seem to need to do each day. I've also made a lot of silly mistakes in the last couple days, which are only compounding all my frustrations. With this is mind, I've been trying to remind myself of the phrase:
Do the next right thing.
Especially when I've made mistakes or when I'm feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. It's a gentle reminder to pick myself up and keep moving forward, no matter what's been going on. Sometimes it means taking a break to relax and have fun. More often, it means doing the things I don't want to do, knowing that the long-term benefits are more important to me than the short-term inconvenience or unpleasantness. No matter what, it's a reminder to keep moving towards my goals, no matter how challenging things seem to be getting, or how little progress I feel like I'm making.
Keep moving forward. Do the next right thing. Even tiny steps in the right direction are worth something in the long run.
A painting of some prayer beads I got in France a few months ago. The real medallion depicts the archangel Michael (St. Michel) but I couldn't capture that much detail in watercolour. The colours didn't come out perfectly accurate, but I'm very proud of the highlights and shadows.

I spent all of this past weekend at a local art fair with my friends, and that inspired me to pick up my paints again for the first time in a very long time. I decided to make my prayer beads my subject. I found I remembered a lot more technique than I thought I would!
I've been doing a lot more reading and journaling lately. I'm currently trying to get through “Emma” by Jane Austen, and finding it far more enjoyable than I had initially anticipated. I'll also never tire of the view out this window. I'm going to miss it in a few weeks.

I'm starting this blog in the hopes that it will keep me motivated throughout the semester to actually study and be productive. I've also just always wanted to start a blog, but never felt like I had a good enough reason to. I suppose this is as good a reason as any!
I'm less than three weeks from moving in to residence, and preparations are going slowly. I've been using all the extra downtime to get myself in order and catch up on some reading, since I'm not counting on having much time for it once classes start. I hope to finish this book by the end of the month.
