Holiday break is here and with it are days with no school, full of good food, friends and family. However, between drinking hot chocolate, sleeping in and watching movies, it is easy to forget about all the work that needs to be done. So in order to help you avoid doing all the work last minute (and avoid all the stress resulting from it), we want to share some tips on how to make this break as productive as possible, without of course sacrificing the precious free time-we hope you’ll find something useful here!
1. Make a list of all the things that need to be done
Write everything down- all the papers that need to be written, all the topics that need to be revised, but also the dentist appointment you need to make and the shopping trip you’re supposed to go on with your mother. Having an honest list of all the tasks you want to accomplish this break is the only way of creating a manageable schedule which will allow you to both do everything and still have some time to relax.
2. Create a schedule
Fun fact- breaks and schedules are not mutually exclusive, and actually having a schedule during your break might help you enjoy it more. Look at the list of things you need to do, decide when you’re going to do each thing and put it down in your calendar. It’s an undeniable truth that once you have a precise date on when you’re supposed to start doing something, it is much harder to postpone or avoid it, in contrary to when you simple plan on doing the thing “at some point”
3. Don’t study for the whole day
There is a reason why you have a break now, and it’s not so you can pretend you’re still at school. Even if you have a lot of studying, try to avoid doing it for more than 4 hours a day, as it will only leave you tired and irritated. Although it might seem like a great idea to study 8 hours for 3 days and then be (theoretically) free, try instead to have 4 hours study sessions for 6 days- not only it is scientifically proven that you will remember more, but you’ll feel less frustrated that you’re spending your break sitting in front of your books, which will result in you being in better mood and therefore being even more productive
4. Now is the time for summaries and resolutions
Now that you finally have some time, it might be a good time to take a look back at the ending year and think about what went wrong, what you managed to achieve and what you want to do next year. Think about your resolutions, think about what you want to accomplish, do the necessary research and make all the preparations, so when we enter the new year, you’ll be ready to make it your best yet
5. Clean out your room and your closet
We firmly believe that there aren’t many other things which make you want to be more productive than having a pristinely clean room. Throw away all the things you won’t need (once again be honest with yourself) and look through your closet. Sell or give away clothes you won’t be wearing again, and later enjoy your (seemingly) brand new room.
6. Read a book
This may not be academically productive, but it certainly is personally productive. Contrary to what you might believe during the school year, you can actually learn a whole lot about really cool subjects from books you’re not assigned to read for a class. Reading for pleasure may not be feasible when you are swamped with work, but it’s a wonderful assignment to give yourself while you get cozy in your ugly-but-actually-cute Christmas sweater.
7. Relax (really!)
Slacking off for a whole week may be not the greatest of ideas, but give yourself a day or two for doing absolutely nothing. Sleep late, eat an enormous brunch and watch a movie, and then another one. A day like that will make wonders for you, trust us on that one (just be careful not to make it last more than 2 days, because then getting back o work gets harder)
Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays!
