How to Succeed in Life
1. Know what you want to get out of life … as you won’t reach your goals if you don’t where you’re going. 2. Make a list of all things that you’re grateful for … as it will change your attitude, your feelings and your mood. 3. Count to 10 before responding (or even worse, reacting) … as you don’t want to live with a series of regrets. 4. Track your progress so you know how you’re doing on your journey, and can make adjustments if you find you get off course. 5. Take care of yourself or you’ll end up burnt out – and you’ll lose the motivation to try, and persevere.

You just do it. You force yourself to get up. You force yourself to put one foot before the other, and God damn it, you refuse to let it get to you. You fight. You cry. You curse. Then you go about the business of living. That’s how I’ve done it. There’s no other way.

In-Class Notes Format
So I’ve told you how to color code your notes but honestly, who wants to take 20,000 a bunch of pens to class everyday? I only take one pen to class (well, and a pencil for pop quizzes and Aural Skills because only musical prodigies can use a pen in Aural Skills—maybe not even prodigies) and this is how I write my notes! I’m going to be honest, I don’t come home every day and rewrite all of my notes in perfectly color coded handwriting. When I don’t, this is a great way to already have semi-organized (but much less time consuming) notes! All you need is:
A pen
A notebook
That’s it.
I have 3 sections to my in-class notes:
Main notes
"Reference" sidebar
Distractions sidebar
Your main notes obviously go in the middle section, the “reference” part go on the outer edge (past that little line that you’re not supposed to write past), and the distractions (my favorite part) go on the inner edge (again, past the little line).
The Main Notes:
You know those normal, boring notes you would write in class on an average, unorganized day? They go here. This is a great place to use abbreviations and symbols because professors generally tend to go a little faster than a student’s tired, cramping hand can write. The most important thing in my opinion is using bullet points (I use “–” and “•” alternating for bullet points, numbers in a circle for numbered lists, and boxes for things to do).
The “Reference Sidebar:
It is almost inevitable that at least one professor will come up with homework that is not on the syllabus. Obviously you’re going to write the homework down in your notes but it will get swallowed up by the rest of the information on the page. The way I make them stand out is by putting an asterisk (*) in the reference sidebar and then put some defining word beside it (this sounds confusing but just look at the picture at the top of this post, it’s really easy). These are some of my most used references (and what they mean):
hw = homework
vw = vocabulary word
oyo = on your own (things like “post on OMCL”, “go get groceries”, stuff like that)
due = due dates
handout = any handouts you receive should be listed in your notes, it’s a good reference to have later
grade = the grades you get back should ALL be recorded in your notes!!
The Distractions Sidebar:
You are going to get distracted in class. It’s going to happen. You are going to have some great idea or a really interesting that you want to draw or whatever and the only way to get it out of your head is to write it down on paper. This is the place to do that. This section automatically gets filled up on my paper and it encourages me to write more and more notes in my main notes section so I can get to the next page and write down more distractions. This actually has made me take more detailed notes so don’t think the distractions sidebar will be your distraction, it’s actually made to help with it!
One last note: it’s important for your distractions sidebar to be on the side of the paper closest to the spiral and the reference sidebar to be on the outside of your notebook. This way you can quickly flip through your notes and see your reference sheet so you can find your homework, due dates, etc. Have fun taking notes!
