Like, make all the monsterfucking jokes you want, but Guillermo del Toro knows his shit when it comes to early 20th Century cosmic horror literature, and The Shape of Water is a direct critical response to H P Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth – and if you understand the subtext of The Shadow over Innsmouth, then you’ve gotta understand that it’s absolutely essential to The Shape of Water’s criticism that the heroine fucks that sexy fish-man. yeah, the thing about Lovecraft is that the claustrophobia and horror built into his work are pretty directly drawn from his real-life fears. Like, Lovecraft’s racism and xenophobia went well beyond what was considered normal at the time, to the point that even people who knew and liked him found it concerning.

The uncomprehending, brain-melting blind terror a Lovecraft character feels about the Old Ones is only slightly exaggerated from the way Lovecraft felt IRL about basically anyone who was not a white Protestant man from Rhode island.

and one of the main themes of The Shape of Water is that people who are not accepted or acceptable parts of mainstream society can find commonality in their differences — that there can be solidarity, friendship and love between very different people with very different experiences, because they all know what it feels like to be outsiders.
