I have been briefly lured back to tumblr to see the fallout from the Phan announcement 😅 Don't be surprised if I just repost a few things and disappear again

#first shourtney was real now phan is real annoucement. wild coupla years for the rpf section of the internet

I've not been on here in like a couple of months (summer has been incredibly busy and now I'm in the midst of moving) and there's way to much for me to catch up with and I actually haven't really been missing tumblr so I don't know if I'll be back properly

But having watched the first 2 eps of wonderhole s2 I have to say/note for myself thst I think they are leaning into sentimental/sweet to much this season at the expense of being funnier. Like both eps have had cute or reflective commentary on their friendship but I haven't laughed that much. I didn't really outright laugh at the 2nd ep at all tbh.

And the twist to each episode being a slow reveal (from the finding 'drugs' to finding out what the pizza dude is about and finding the 'book of morgan' to the cult revealation) is nowhere near as fun to me as sudden completely off kilter twists. (Like going from a airplane vlog to crash landing on a desert island for example). Tbf that's the only time they really did that last season but I'm just now realising that lack of sharp twist is something I was missing from the other eps without being able to put my finger on it.

I also love the surrealism that sudden change in tone creates, but they managed to inject a bit of surrealism into other vids in other ways last season (the red vs blue for sure does that). So hopefully they will do that again this season, they just haven't yet. (For me - I guess on paper a hotel cult is kinda surreal but it didn't really come across like that).

Ironically I still think the best 'wonderhole' ep (season zero so not really wonderhole) is Digging a Medium sized Hole and that doesn't have a sharp twist. But it does have surrealism. And a song. I miss those too. The Unhaunted House one is a fave too and I'm pretty sure that had a sudden twist from what I recall and was surreal.

So yeah I guess I know the two qualities I want them to add going forward this season lol. And less leanging on the meaningful stuff to give ompf to an episode

#its not that i don't appreciate thoughtful commentary on their friendship but its a comedy. its only obligation is to be funny #everything has to be in service of that #so if we need to get rid of meaning to be more outright funny do it #or just y'know figure out how to do both at the same intensity at the same time. but that is hard #also i love the travel to the future and 3d printing farts eps but they are both so unique and separate in format and style #and clearly not what they are going for style wise this season #that i just moved them out of the conversation
