Hi! Shorter one, but I put a lot of time into this one. I think I scrapped 8 different part 10's. Sorry, but I was having a hard time deciding what to do from here. I really wanted to time skip, but it didn't feel like I allowed her to fully recover or have any grieving period. Hopefully this helps showcase some of the incomplete transformation she underwent, and her deep grief for Aki.
The ash covered earth crumpled beneath your feet. Remnants of your life were scattered. Ash whipped, settling in your lungs and burning the edges of your eyes. Many days had passed, but the embers from your burnt village still scorched your soles as you trudged through what remained. The burn was a quiet comfort. A searing reminder that you weren’t fully dead.
Aki now rested in a remote corner of the ruined village. Aki’s final resting place lay at the river’s edge - once a haven for your love, now an earthy tomb he would never leave. With a heavy heart you approached the unmarked grave. The only indication of his final resting place was the disrupted soil. Aching legs slumped to the ground; the constant running was starting to catch up with you.
Cold hands kneaded the loose soil beneath your fingertips. Silent tears dripped slowly down your face. Above, a break in the clouds allowed a thin beam of moonlight to trickle down, catching the fallen tears on your hand. Sinking your hands deeper into the soil you allowed the earth to take your sorrow.
“Why did you have to leave me?”
No answer. The wind continued to rustle the bushes. The stream continued to flow. You sat hunched over gripping the earth. The dim moonlight glowed across your pale skin, illuminating you like a colourful predator against the night. Perhaps the wind spared you out of fear, of something no longer entirely human. It was possible Mother Nature avoided interrupting your grief out of respect, or maybe nature kept her distance. Nature becoming wary of the new scars that set you apart from the living world. The silence of everything was daunting. Your voice hung in the air so foreign, like a stranger in an unfamiliar town. You had never been so alone, never felt so weak.
“I wasn’t ready to lose you.”
Teeth chattering, your meek form curled into the soil where your husband now slept. Your arms burrowed deep into the rich soil. Held in a tender embrace, your body was finally surrendered to rest.

——————————————————————————
The wind tickled at your exposed arms. The chill allowed little hills to crawl out of your skin. No matter how many layers; there was always a deep chill resonating in your bones. You were not sure what caused the chill. Maybe the chill was your heart's deep ache for Aki, the venom contaminating your blood, or the longing you felt as you watched the tribe ignore your presence.
You had managed to save the tribe.
No one could ever repay you for your bravery that night.
Hushed voices, silent stares, the trophies of your sacrifice.
A cruel reality. You watched in slow motion as Leah gasped quietly, a repulsed grimace gradually grew as her face paled. Her hushed whisper floated to your ears, “monster.”
You heard her silent decree. With every syllable, as her hands wove an impenetrable wall around her unborn child, you broke.
You could not be the monster she was talking about, but the memory of Aki’s dried blood on your hands told the truth. You are a monster.
Once spiritual confidons - now as you hummed silent tunes - elders muttered prayers and clutched talismans in their palms.
A sigh or inhale too close to a warrior and their knuckles became white as snow. They always kept a blade within reach.
The fear emanating from the tribe was palpable. Although your life hadn’t ended that fateful night, the people of your tribe mourned you, feared you - a walking corpse.
It had been weeks since the attack. Mothers clutched their children close when you walked. Concealing them behind their skirts.
Your throat burned, bile threatening to burn you from within like acid. You wished sometimes it would burn right through you.
Your lungs were always in a losing battle for air, the thirst making your throat contract, slicing at the fibers of your lungs. Your body was on the brink of death.
But you were stronger, faster, your senses heightened, better in every physical way - yet you have never felt more broken. Even though the venom had shaped you into this demi-god of a being, your insatiable hunger haunted your every moment.
Swinging your body around abruptly, Archer's hand remained hovering in the air where your shoulder once was.
His touch, the scent he emitted. It was all almost unbearable.
A metallic taste spread its way slowly through your mouth; reaching for your face you felt a large gash in your front lip. Oxygen deprived blood oozed from the cut into your mouth; doing nothing to satisfy the desert of your throat. The ache in you remained - the blood from your cut providing no nourishment.
Archer's eyes softened. His eyes provide a comfort that had been denied. Slowly he lowered his hand and gestured you to walk by his side, “Don’t worry, I don’t bite.” His body stiffened slightly at the implication of his words, but a smile forced its way onto his lips.
A small chuckle emerged, the first in weeks.
How could anyone in this tribe possibly crack a joke at this time, but Archer, after facing the horrors by your side, still found a way to comfort you.
The humour was short lived though. The chuckle that had emerged now felt like a disgrace to Aki’s memory. Laughter - laughing at the very action used in taking your lover's life. Aki. He was the love of your life, he once promised to rearrange the stars.
The deep melancholy returned to your face - a wandering traveller that once sought refuge on occasion, now deciding to place roots in your eyes.
Witnessing the shift in atmosphere, a small sigh left Archer's lips. He knew he did not have the power or means to make you happy, but that night he had sworn a vow to your late husband.
Shifting on his feet, Archer took a deep, sharp, intake of air and outstretched his arm in a small offering.
His patient hand sat outstretched - you didn’t deserve his kindness.
Silently you stepped in stride with Archer. A pause. Not a significant pause, but a moment to think.
Your hand hovered over Archer's slightly outstretched arm. The hunger burned, but for the first time since that fateful night you reached out and held onto flesh and blood.
An insatiable burn filled your lungs, but you managed to control the urges. His heartbeat pulsed underneath your fingertips.
In an attempt to ground yourself - fighting off the hunger - you inhaled sharply through your nose; although that proved helpless as the smell of sweat and blood ignited your senses.
Feeling the soft Earth beneath your feet, listening to the crickets chirp, you persevered, forcing shallow breaths out.
Archer silently guided you towards the village - remnants of your past.
Dusk settles over the horizon. A familiar burn seeps deep into your veins. Your movements aren’t quite as agile - the ache in every muscle, shards of ice swimming in your veins - you move slower in the cold. Thick blood clogging the passages in your body. Your heart beat, faint as a breeze stirring a leaf, struggled to keep pace.
Archer glances at your young frame. Someone seemingly immortal is so affected by a cold night - it’s unsettling. It’s unnatural the state your life remained in. Aki’s blood had caused a change never seen before. Archer has only heard theories as a young warrior of your state.
That night. The night the cold ones attacked. Archer had seen your bravery and now he would forever acknowledge you as the warrior you are. Although an undead corpse, Archer had vowed to Aki and himself to protect you.
That night you had saved his sister and many more. In Aki’s honour he would ensure you had a chance.
Archers’ face contorted in anguish. You know tonight was going to decide your fate amongst the tribe. He gave your hand a squeeze, an unspoken promise
This on is short, but important to set the scene for the rest of the story. I promise if you're here for the long haul to read some Paul it is worth it Also creative liberties taken! Thank you
Your body writhed in pain. A burning sensation unlike no other; blood felt like it was boiling under your skin. All you could do was scream. Heartbroken tears fell on your icy skin as Aki desperately carried you deeper into the woods.
He had managed to kill the cold one because of your sacrifice, but it hadn’t gone as expected. In its frenzied state the cold one was sucking your blood, unable to ignore its scent, and rendered stupid. Aki had seized the opportunity and tore its limbs off, but he could not help the venom now flowing deep in your veins. Your body was being altered.
He carried you in his human form; no longer able to transform due to his injuries. Aki was bleeding from various gashes - his superhealing harming himself more than anything. Many deep gashes were healing improperly - allowing blood and grime to interact - and his ribs had fused at irregular angles from constant breaking. Unrelenting he carried his wife; he carried you. The heartbreak at watching you in pain was more than he could bear, but he trudged forward even at personal cost. In the distance he saw hope spark.
As he approached the gathering of his tribe, Aki could not help feeling his body giving way to exhaustion. Many came running at the sight of their hero and his lover. Archer and Athena were the first to reach them. Archer gave the couple a weary look and began crowd control.
Athena approached gingerly. She knew what was going to happen; she had seen it before. “Aki. You have to let her go. We need to handle her before the change.”
Still clawing at your skin in pain, tears pricked your eyes. You were unable to quite understand what was transpiring around you, but you could see the desperation and sorrow in Aki’s eyes. Hear his pleading words, “Please. Please. Athena, we both know very well there is one way to change the outcome slightly for her.”
A knowing frown spread across Athena’s face. She had cared for you, but was this in the best interest of the tribe? Would altering your fate slightly kill or save them? “Aki. We do not know if she’ll be able to control herself! What you are asking is a theory from legend.” Wiping at her brow she pondered sadly and looked at the broken warrior, he was just a husband begging for your second chance. “Aki you do realize you do not possess enough blood to survive?”
Sighing he reached down to your icy form. Seeing your agony, but understanding your love and sacrifice. “I have lived a long time, Athena, experienced more than my fair share. I won't lose my wife, she is the axis of my world. I have more than enough faith she will prevail and protect you all in my stead. If I'm honest Athena, my body won’t make the trip. She is our hope.”
Only the three remained at your side as your body continued to morph into something new. Archer had urged the remaining quarter of your tribe to keep their distance. Archer stood bow ready to protect his people, but Aki held you close. You could hear the sadness and love in his voice as he sang to you. You did not understand what was happening, but you felt the pain subsiding and your body relaxing. A deep thirst from inside grew; an empty hole threatening to cave and rupture. Although you had never felt colder, the warmth from Aki was the constant you craved.
Athena watched patiently. Only in legend had it been told of how to layaway the effects of the beast's venom; a sacrifice of Quileute shifter blood. Along with Aki’s claim that the venom could not have been substantial in your veins - due to the short span of the bite - she had a weary faith.
As your eyes opened, the weary eyes of your lovers were fluttering closed. You looked at Aki as his breath came out uneven and his body began to cool. Even as he lay dying in your arms, his hand caressed your face lovingly. “You're as beautiful as ever my love.” His hand fell from your face. His body ice. The warmth in his eyes faded.
Tears wanted to fall, but your body couldn’t form them. A cold consuming ache reverberated in your soul. Your hands went slowly to your face, feeling the wet slick on your mouth. Looking down, your hands were covered in blood. Desperately you wiped at the ground. Leaning to cradle your lover you rocked his massive body with ease. What have you done? What happened to you?
Unnoticed Zach had slipped away from the community and found the small group. He had not watched you change. He had not seen you drain the life from his father, but he had seen his fathers last breaths and heard his declaration of love; although young, Zach understood his mother had changed - she was still his mother. Managing to scramble to you in your heartbroken state he clung onto you. Your body was icy beneath his own, but you were his mama and he knew he would protect you.
This one is a bit longer, but I couldn't find a good end until now. I hope that everything is holding consistent and you enjoy. I will say my biggest flaw is proof reading.
Archer held you a long time, his body aflame with unbridled anger. Suddenly his hold fell and you noticed that the coast was clear. Turning to face you, he spoke in a hushed tone, “I saw some warriors taking the kids into the clearing near the river. Go look for Zach there. I am going back to help whoever I can and send them east. Grab Zach and head east and do not stop.”
You nod appreciatively, you both embrace for a moment and separate. Sneaking through the underbrush, you approach the river. Not far from the river bank you see a huddled group beneath the shrubs and dense life of the forest. Legs faltering from exhaustion. Your thighs ached from the torture of running, crouching, and fighting. The screams of your friends and family still echoed from your encampment, but you had to ignore them and get to Zach.
As the dense tangle of underbush separated, you managed to come into contact with a small group of women and children. Some let out small gasps at your arrival, but you quickly silenced them. A tiny pair of arms made their way to your neck and clung desperately. Zach’s small body seemed frail and cold now. His body shook silent sobs. You felt the burning eyes of the women and children watching you, waiting for you. Somehow they were looking at you to be a beacon of hope. What right did you have to believe you could protect anyone, let alone yourself. It was imaginable. What power, skills, or weapons did you possess to protect anyone; however, the pleading, desperate, eyes of Aki’s people - your people - drove you to action.
Ushering everyone to come closer, you explained how you would get them out alive.
It felt as if you had honed zero skills in your time with Aki, but somehow you had managed to lead your small group to the east edge of camp. It had not been without difficulty, but you all had miraculously managed to avoid detection so far. A long awaited sigh of release left your body as you all stopped to catch your breath at the edge of a clearing. Zach clung to your shoulders - you had carried him all this way, refusing to allow him away from you now. Still hours before the sun would rise, you could use the cover of night to lead your people as far away from danger as possible. If you could only get them far enough east and rejoin Archer.
There was one major obstacle in your path now though. This would prove the most difficult. You would all have to run. A vast divide in the forest had appeared in your way - it would take hours and miles to travel around - the forest that blocked you from detection could no longer provide aid. It was up to you all now. A two hundred meter sprint forward was all that kept you from another section of dense shrubbery.
With some substantial distance between your group and camp the silence had grown, but it was the same eerie silence from the day before. A gnawing feeling from within was nagging at you, it was all too easy. If the cries and screams from camp had gone quiet why hadn’t you seen anyone. It had been a notable stretch of time since you had seen a cold one, warrior, settler, or survivor; although, you could not remain motionless for long. Pairing the stronger women up with a child was the best option. Fortunately the ratio of women to children was two to one. Silently and not to draw too much attention the women without children volunteered to venture into the clearing first. Grabbing your shoulder, Athena - an older woman - leaned in closely to whisper, “Save the children. Please don’t be rash. The only way to ensure nothing is lurking out there is for us older girls to go first. If needed, take them and run the opposite direction. Take this to protect who you can.” Thrusting a small homemade dagger into your hand, she turned toward the field.
Half the women without children on their back lined up to charge forward. A silent countdown… Three… Two… One…
Sprinting with all their might, your small group watched as they pumped their arms and ran determinedly across the glade. Moments later everyone's spirits lifted, there were no screams, pleas, or shadows chasing them down. The second wave prepared themselves. This wave consisted of the stronger women all with children clinging to their backs. You prepared yourself. One hand held firm supporting Zach on your back; the other hand clutching the blade. Another countdown… Three… Two… One…
Launching forward you all ran. Ran like you had never before. Ran, as if you were soaring through the fields like a deer escaping a hunter. Tears of exhaustion pricked at your eyes. Having not rested in over a day, your body burned and fought itself, fighting to just fall and rest. You knew you could not stop. The tiny arms clutching at your neck, the sorrow filled sniffles that rattled in your ears, was a reminder of your persistence. The gap in the clearing was closing. You were going to make it. Your little group would live.
You were never going to make it; because, you would never live as a hero, let alone die as one. You would die violently, young and scared; just like your mother said you would one day. You never wanted to die, but to live a long life with Jasper, Zach, Aki, but you never got what you wanted.
Getting thrown to the ground, struggling to breath, you coughed and desperately looked around. The other women had frozen in place, staring at you in horror. Zach lay in the grass crying a couple feet from you. A deep chuckle made your head snap behind you. A man stood gleaming in the moonlight, his stark crimson eyes burned into you. The stench of blood assaulted your nose, but as he stood there you had one thought. Aki. It was a long shot. You didn’t even know if Aki was still alive, but you had to try. You staggered to your feet, drawing the man's cold gaze and screamed at the top of your lungs, “AKI!”
Time went on and no wolf came to your rescue, no warrior emerged from the forest. Everything felt still. The man laughed, a deep, booming, mocking laugh and began to slowly approach. All hope was lost, all you could do was attempt to fight for your lives. Knees threatening to buckle, you forced your body to run to Zach and shoved him towards the forest. “Run! Everyone run!”
Zach tried to grab onto you, but you harshly urged him away. The fear and urgency in your eyes made him turn and run. You could see Athena at the edge of the brush urging him to her. A harsh blow to your leg snapped it in two. A guttural scream died in your throat as the man's cold, dead hands lifted you by the throat. Thrashing, air refused to enter your lungs. Kicking, fighting, you knew you had to do something. Weakly you managed to slice at his arm with the blade. As if you weighed nothing, you were thrown down into the dirt. You could do nothing but hope Athena would get Zach far away from here. As you closed your eyes you anticipated death, quick, swift; you had seen how easily they could take a life. When nothing came you peered over towards the cold one; his teeth barred, not at you, but at something behind you.
Behind you was your solace. Aki stood snarling at a distance behind you. His once pure white fur stained a deep maroon all over and he sported a steely gaze. It felt as if you were breathing for the first time that night, your heart warming. Even though Aki had come, something was off. His eyes darted around in worry and he didn’t appear confident as he approached the cold one cautiously. In his eyes you could see in unease. Every slow step showed his exhaustion, but also his resilience.
The fight dragged on around you. Aki and the cold one battled; both had strength you had never seen before and speed unmatched. The sun would be up soon and Aki seemed no closer to winning. If Aki lost you all would die, that man would surely track your group down and slaughter them before they could reach the other half of your tribe. You could tell Aki was fighting hard, but he was preoccupied keeping an eye on you. Every sharp inhale. Any sign of discomfort his attention was drawn to you, but you could use yourself. With determination, you managed to pull yourself up. The throbbing of your snapped leg was unbearable; however, you managed to stand awkward and limp upright.
With all your remaining strength you yelled; not any words, just all the rage that had bubbled up and could not be contained anymore. Your fear. Your life. All encapsulated into this one final yell. The battle seemed to pause - your sudden announcement pulling the battle to a halt - and you raised your dagger. Fear filled Aki’s wolf. His eyes pleaded you to stop; no one could read you like him. He knew what you were going to do. He knew you were about to die. In one swift motion you ran the dagger deep and harsh into your arm; carving a long jagged cavern in your skin. Blood oozed out, escaping your flesh. You winced, feeling nauseated at the sight. Your distraction; although deadly, made the cold one sprint at you.
Archer had explained to you earlier in the bush a last ditch effort to distract them and a warning. “They all seem to be relatively fresh to death. Their strength is doubled, but in their heightened state is their weakness. At this point in their transformation, their bloodlust is at an all time high. They seem to be unable to resist it, so do anything to clot cuts. Only if necessary draw them away with blood, but that means death.” The seriousness in Archer's tone had put you on edge. The way his eyes seemed to know that you might have to sacrifice yourself for others; he hated placing that burden on you - his family.
It seemed to happen in slow motion, the cold one managed to get past Aki in his scared state. Suddenly your short life, a life full of love replayed in front of your eyes. The only regrets you held were not watching Zach grow old alongside Aki, and that you would not see Jasper again. Your lover raced to get to you, but he would not make it in time. You were going to die.
Hi everyone. This is a very angsty and sad part. Violence and lots of unsettling themes. (Sorry I don't know how else to describe it). Hope you are happy with another part though, only 1000 words, but appreciate any support and feedback.
Zach had excitedly dragged your family to the now ragging bonfire, and ran off to play with some of the children nearby. Everyone was happily chatting and laughing together. As the crowd chattered, Akirose from your side and walked to the elders, “Everyone!” The sudden cold wind from the North made you shutter, “I know everyone is under stress. We are all afraid for the journey ahead tomorrow, but we can’t forget that we are a community!” Aki paused, “I know that with you all by my side I am stronger, stronger for all of you, stronger because of my son,” looking towards you, Aki’s eyes were flooded with love, “stronger for my wife.Tomorrow we will leave these dangers behi-.” Aki suddenly froze. You looked around, but nothing had changed, no one noticed anything amiss, but Aki’s sudden shift was noticed by all.
An elder from the other side of the fire stood to speak, “Aki is everything alrig-.” Before anyone could respond, life was drained from the elders' eyes. His body shook, air escaping his lung in a wheeze. He was a good man. He deserved a peaceful death, but this violent drain on his life was far from peaceful. It was over in mere seconds, but the scene felt like it was never ending. You watched as the light in his eyes faded and his skin grew pale. A flash of light flew across your vision and you sprung into action.
Darting around frantic people you tried desperately to find Zach, “Zach! Zach, baby please! Where are you!” You watched helplessly as settlers and cold one’s working together burned your homes down and slaughtered your people. Aki was defending the community as best as you could, but it was a solo battle against an army. You willed yourself forward, dodging your own people’s desperate escape and attacks from others. An intense ache filled your lungs. Your calves burned from exhaustion, but you had to push on to find Zach. It was terrible. Every turn you took was fiery or filled with people set on hurting you.
A calloused hand grabbed at your hair, yanking you harshly to the dirt. “Hey there girl, where do you think you’re going.” The man’s breath stunk of rum and he had your legs pinned beneath him. His rotting teeth made you gag as he breathed in your face. “I might be able to sell a pretty lady like you, or maybe those bloodsuckers have a plan for some of you.” Your body ignited in an attempt to flee, rearing back your heads collided harshly. The man shot back in pain clutching his face in his hands; however, he was still sitting on top of you, pinning you to the ground.
A flash crossed your vision; frozen you frantically wiped at your face. It was warm, liquid clouded your vision. Hands shaking as you looked up at the man above you. His face was contorted with pain and his pupils blown wide. Above you he helplessly struggled with a spear embedded in his neck; blood splattered over you and was pulsing out of his neck as he attempted to claw for air. He sputtered - gasping for one final breath that wouldn’t come - the vessels in his eyes bursting and the veins in neck straining against his skin.
Bucking up your hips, his body fell in the grass - writhing in agony as he helplessly engraved marks in the surrounding dirt. Air. Desperate for air, lungs burning. Your body had been beginning a silent plea for you to breathe in. Gasping was all you could do as you lay motionless in the grass; the sound of your heart pumping reverberating in your ears.
Separated from the dirt beneath you, a strong pair of arms hoisted you up. Archer Black - Aki’s cousin - was inspecting you. He carefully guided you behind a densely packed section of shrubbery, “Hello, are you hurt? Have you been bitten anywhere?” Frantically he lifted your arms and spun you around to inspect you, “You need to tell me now! I have to go find more people. Are you going to be ok?”
Clouded, his questions made no sense, your brain was unable to move fast enough. The whole night was a blur of chaos, nothing made any sense. Shaking your shoulders he snapped you back to reality, “No bites. I am ok.” Ok was not how you felt, but how were you supposed to feel in a time like this. Rational thought had long since left; however, you had to push through.
Archer peered through the shrubs at the chaos of your home keeping you both low, “I need to leave now, but you need to stay here.”
“No. No. Archer, I can’t! I have to go find Zach!” Desperately you made an attempt to leave the bushes - if Zach was out there you could not remain still - beyond the shrubbery you saw the violence, but you had to go back.
Grabbing your arms, Archer cradled you into his body and covered your mouth. You were about to contend when you saw the horror in his eyes. Just beyond the shrubs, roughly ten feet from where you crouched, men were dragging any women from the tribe they could into the forest. Horror and panic washed over you, your friends, family were being dragged away. Suddenly the man's words from earlier were clear - the reason for the partnership between settler and cold ones; they were eating and selling the women of the tribe. Your body was shaking, but not on your own will; you glanced over your shoulder to see Archer's eyes full of tears - his tears were not full of sorrow, but rage. The rage in his eyes could have set the whole forest ablaze; although, all the rage he felt, all the anger pouring out from his body, he was forced to remain in place and not act. Not everyone would be saved tonight, it wouldn’t be guaranteed anyone would live to see daybreak.

As the rays extended over the horizon, birds began to chirp and the day began, a cold breeze was blowing from the south. The breeze of the morning wasn’t violent, harsh or bitter; the breeze just left a feeling of uncertainty. Goosebumps formed across your arms, despite the warm rays of the sun across your skin. Everyone was beginning to bustle about preparing for the move tomorrow - a new land was found, suitable for crops, open fields, and many animals in the area - the tribe has not seemed this carefree and alive for some time. Although people seemed to be at ease, you were unable to shake your uncertainty. Everything was falling into place so easily, and you couldn’t escape a nagging feeling of despair; despair at the aches Aki still felt, the fear in your sons’ eyes that night, and the unnerving feeling of being watched. Normally being able to blend into the shadows and disappear into crowds without a thought; it was now odd that you felt this vulnerable out in the open. Having walked to the edge of the forest - no further than six hundred meters from camp - you turned to face home. No one in the tribe was looking in your direction. No one was calling your name. Nothing had seemingly changed. A gust of wind forcing your face north made your body screen, you wanted to run. As your eyes scanned the tree line, nothing was odd. The trees swayed, leaves fell, and everything appeared as it always was. Something deep within you couldn’t shake your fear. Something was driving your senses into overdrive. Something was telling you to run. Then it hit you, the silence of the North Forest.
Walking through the tribe the fears had subsided, but fear was lingering in your soul. The cold hands, cracked and weathered hands squeezing at your lungs. You had stood frozen for some time, watching. Reluctantly you had come home, but you couldn’t understand why that fear had overtaken you so abruptly. Although the feeling lingered you did not feel eyes burning your skin, so surrounded by people you felt more invisible than your time alone near the forest's edge.
The day progressed, the sun began to set, and people had packed their lives into wagons. It was odd to see how your lives here had suddenly seemingly disappeared; although, the faint remnants of you remained and your shelters remained up for the night, the land seemed untouched. A large fire roared at the centre of your shelters. The breeze had grown harsher as the day progressed. People were settling in with family and friends around the blazing heat. Elders that remained were telling young children stories. Couples cuddling as the sun grew colder. As the light withdrew over the horizon, you were drawn back to the outskirts, the North Forest seemed to stand still. Your legs froze before you could leave the edge of camp, but the feeling of eyes returned. Eyes watching you, waiting to see your next move. You knew you were irrational. Nothing about it made sense. No one was watching. Persistent, the feeling remained. Earlier you had realized what had unerved you, the silence. You had come back to confirm.. the wildlife of the North side seemed to have vanished. No birds singing in the sky; no squirrels running through the trees. It was abnormal.
Silence was not what the forest offered if you sat and listened quietly enough. The forest had its own voice, loud and boisterous. The forest's voice was a flowing creek, crunching leaves, birds singing, an elk calling to its young, but this silence. It felt as if the forest had died.
A young and excited voice pulled you from your thoughts. “Mama! Mama!” You looked over your shoulder to see Zach kicking his legs excitedly from Aki’s broad shoulders. He was the sun. As they approached the worry of the forest's voice nestled in the back of your mind as the sun rose again. Even with night enveloping the sky, you never felt so warm under Zachs rays.
Climbing down his father, Zach rambled endlessly and incoherently. He spoke at such a rate not even the most attentive could keep up. “My sun, please slow down!”
Excitedly jumping at your feet he began again, “Mama! You have to come! Please come! It’s starting soon!” Zach began to grab at your hands and pull you into the camp.
Giggling, you had no choice but to follow the young boy. You looked to your husband for help or clarification, but he only shrugged and walked in stride with you.

HI! Sorry for the delay had zero ideas, or anything creative flowing in me. Please enjoy if you’re still reading and give any feedback that you feel would help :)
Hi Everyone! I'm back and getting back into my writings. I have missed it and hope to revitalize old stories that have remained unfinished. The Angry Past posts will be flowing in. I have gotten over the hump I was stuck on for a while there. Hopefully you like the two new additions and more to come. Don't worry Paul will be coming soon if that's what you all are waiting for. Sorry about the long setup, but I've fallen in love with the little family I have been writing for you and hope you are too.
Watching your friends and now family pack up to leave was difficult, especially when it came time to hug Leah goodbye, “Please be careful.”
“You know I will be. I’m more worried about leaving you here with an injured Aki and taking Liam with me. I can’t help but have a sinking feeling leaving. I hate saying goodbye.”
“Don’t think of it as a goodbye then. I will see you when Aki is able to travel, which should not be for much longer. Go my friend it will give me peace of mind knowing that you all are safe. Plus we have two other strong warriors staying back to protect us for now. I will see you soon.” Embracing your friend you tried to put her mind and heart at ease, but nothing had ever felt this final before; although you had tried to not think of this as a goodbye, there was a very somber feeling between you both.
Aki was slowly regaining his strength and taking light assisted walks around what remained of your settlement. He still refused to share with you what had caused his injuries, you had witnessed many hushed conversations between him and the other warriors that remained. What concerned you the most was his unease even during calm moments of the days and nights; it seemed like his eyes would never leave the tree line.
Walking into the small teepee your family occupied Zach was watching the fire with a little scowl on his face. It seems Aki had not returned from his talk with the elders yet. Walking over to the small scornful boy, you placed your body down hard next to him with a dramatic huff. Not receiving a giggle or even a glance you began to worry, “What’s the matter my love? What has you upset?”
Forehead crinkled and lips held in a tight scowl he looks up into your eyes, “Mama, I’ll protect you.”
Surprise was all you could feel, you hadn’t expected such a determined statement to come from his little mouth. Nearing four he was very determined in his ways about very little, but this seemed to be a very thorough statement for such a little boy. “I appreciate it, but you do know as your mama it is my job to protect you my dear.”
Pulling himself up he turned to face you, his little head only slightly over your own as you sat. He placed his hands on his hips and scowled an adorably serious scowl. “But Mama! I am gonna grow up to be a big strong wolf like Papa and I can protect you from the cold ones coming!” A cold sense of dread spread across your spine as he spoke, “I’ve got to practice now and maybe I will get my wolf soon!”
Grabbing his arms by the sides you looked into his eyes deeply, they were so full of resolve it saddened you, “My love, no matter how big and strong you grow, I am your mother and I will forever protect you. Nothing, not even death can keep me from protecting you. Now what makes you say the cold ones are coming, Zachary?”
“I heard Papa and the elders talking. He said that there were so many Mama! Not only the cold ones Mama, but also the settlers are with them! More than the pack could handle, so I have to get big and strong to protect you!” His face grew sad and his big brown eyes glossed over. His voice came out barely a whisper, “I don’t want you to get hurt too.”
“Oh baby don’t you worry about me my Love, I will always be here with you. Your Papa and the tribe will take care of everyone. We are family, and family protects each other.” You pull Zach into your arms and cradle his body against your own as his tears fall. You hadn’t realized how much he had been understanding, he was witnessing so many horrors lately and you couldn’t protect his innocence from everything around. His words had left a deep dread. As you rocked him to sleep you made a silent promise that no matter what happened you would protect Zach even if it meant your life.
The next morning you detached from a sleeping Zachary, in your sleep haze you realized Aki had not returned in the night. Silently you left the teepee and emerged into the brisk morning air, the sun just breaking the horizon. Aki was at a distance watching the treeline intently. His face looked tired, hair in a matted mess, and his body wrapped head to toe in an assortment of bandages. You silently went to retrieve the necessary equipment to try and take what care of him you could.
Approaching Aki you could see the worry and restlessness in his features; bags had begun to form under his eyes in deep cavities, his eyes were red and his lip bitten raw. Even as you approached he did not take notice of you. You had always had the ability to go unnoticed when approaching others, you did not intend to ‘sneak up’, but you just did. Your ability to go unnoticed without even trying was something Aki could not understand. He was always so alert and capable. Aki jumped a little at your touch, but quickly relaxed and his features dropped into calm as his body seemed to gravitate to your own. He didn’t turn to face you, but his voice came out deep and hoarse, “Why are you awake so early?”
The sound of his voice was soothing, but it was not him, it was the shell of unease and worry he had been becoming. “I haven’t been able to sleep in ever my Love. I tend to get up with the warmth of the sun. I brought some things out to fix you up my dear.” A small woven basket rested on your hip, it contained a brush, fresh bandages, ointment and a blanket. “Now. Sit while I clean you up my dear.”
Silently you sat him on the blanket and began to work gently on his matted hair. All while he could still not seem to take his eyes off the tree line ahead.
After some time you were slowly applying the bandages back to his wounds. They were healing well, but without proper rest his healing would be substantially delayed and you worried he may even regress in his healing, “Aki?”
Finally turning to face you, the creases in his brow were deep and made the age in his face appear far greater than he was, “Yes my dear?”
Stroking his hair you bring him in for a soft kiss. He sighs as you pull away and his face smooths over. “Come lay down my dear, rest.”
“I can’t.” His voice cracks and emotion wells up, he refuses to show it on his face though, “I can’t move from this spot. I keep seeing this vision of something coming to get you and Zach and I always feel so unprepared. I feel like if I move and something happens to you.. I couldn’t bare it.”
Sighing, you gently run your fingers through his hair. “If you can not leave this spot, then you will sleep right here.”
“My love I have to watch for threats.”
“Yes, but you can’t possibly use your eyes forever. You need to rest or you are no help to anyone. I will sit here and watch. I will help you protect all of us. I will protect you and Zach, even if it’s just by keeping watch so you can rest.”
“But what if something happens?” Aki tries to rise, but you hold firm on his arm.
Feeling the most useful you have in days you hold firm, “My love my eyes work. You will sleep right here on my lap and if I think I see anything. No matter how insignificant it might appear, I will wake you up.”
Sighing deeply Aki reluctantly gives in, “Ok, but if you even have a feeling you must wake me. I am serious.”
“I know my love. Now, please lay down. I will protect in your place. Let me care for you.” Slowly Aki lays his tired body on the soft ground. In time he drifts off and you stay in your post. Many worries and fears plague your mind, but nothing matters more than using your eyes in Aki’s place. As he rests and you absently run your hands through his hair, you unfortunately don’t have the senses or capabilities to sense the danger looming at a distance. A monster that doesn’t require sleep watches you and the warrior. The monster has been watching for quite some time, but due to Aki’s weakened state and exhaustion he was not able to sense him at the distance he watches from.
All you can do is wait, watch, rebandage… Wait, watch, rebandage… Wait, watch, rebandage. Aki’s breaths are coming uneven and rapid. All you can do is watch as he whimpers in distress in his sleep. Everyone in the tribe was gathered outside your hut, waiting, listening, pleading. The hero of the tribe was wounded beyond anything anyone has ever seen before. You watched as your husband's breaths came in and out laboured. Gingerly you ran your fingers tenderly through his hair. Your son lay in the corner sleeping. He’s getting older now, looking more and more like his father everyday.
Emerging from the tent you walk survey the crowd; elders were murmuring and many of the people were in tears. The turmoil and constant threats to the tribe had become more stress than many could handle; it was becoming more than you thought you could ever endure. You approach the elders - they almost refuse to acknowledge you are there all but one - ready to ask for guidance and maybe gains own hope. Their faces dark, a shadow seemed to look over the elders. As you approached you could hear faint words and whispers, but one particular sentence blew into your ear like a poison, “We must leave..”
the unease in your chest grew, there is no way that in his condition Aki could travel. He would die. “So it’s been decided then?” Eyes turned to face you as you spoke. Your own filling with tears at their words, “You now decide to abandon your strongest and most loyal warrior in his time of need? Where did your loyalty go? Your sense of pride for your land go? Has this not been your tribes land and home since the creation?”
Many of the elders' faces hardened and the disdainful faces you had been accustomed to grew on their faces. A frail hand found its way to yours, pulling your gaze from scorn, “We do not speak of departure without great thought. We are aware of Aki’s health and would never abandon one of our own. Dear this is not only our home but your own now. We understand the land and know of it’s importance, but our home is where we are. If we do not live to see our young like Zach grow, what is the use of land?”
As your face grew wet you couldn’t help but break down in silent sobs. Cradling yourself with your free hand. Bringing your chin to your chest you had never felt so weak. No knowledge of medicine, healing, or war; you were a helpless child with no way. As the tears continued to flow, more and more hands and arms made their way to hold you steady. The tribe was holding you up. Making sure your body stayed strong when you could not hold yourself up anymore. Two hands made their way to your face and brought your gaze to theirs. Leah’s deep eyes met your own, causing a new onslaught of tears to flow. She held your gaze firm with your eyes and spoke, “You are one of us now. Aki is our strongest warrior, but also much more; he is a friend, a neighbour, but most importantly Aki is family. We will never leave family.” Wiping your face with steady hands she continued, “we will allow him to rest a couple days and recoup his will, and strength. That will also allow the tribe time necessary to send half of us ahead to scout for new land. We will get through this danger my friend, all of us.
That night was one of the hardest so far, but had made you feel more connected to the people than ever. You silently watched the shadows of your son and husband as their chests rose and fell. Aki had a loving hand placed on his sons back, although you imagined the pain of the position was great, it seemed to bring him comfort knowing his son was in reach. Your loving Zach even in his sleep had to know you were close by; Zach’s tiny hand had found its way to your ankle and wrapped itself around. Although he ran hot like his father he still craved your warmth.
I was born too late for you to care enough. My whole life has been spent as a silver medalist; never low enough to fail, but not good enough to get the gold.
I have jumped hurdles, mastered my sprints, and trained for marathons just to see you smile, but she is always a hundred metres ahead. No matter how hard I tried, she would win by a landslide.
It didn’t matter that I tried my best, it only mattered that I was born too late. I reach out, trying to grasp your hand; I am only met with a solid wall.
She is occupying your gaze, touch and mind. You hold her to the sky. I’ve never been myself, only a reflection of the things I believed would make you proud.
Have you even Noticed?
I’ll tear myself apart to please you. Build myself back up.
Once I believe my walls are strengthened, my cannons loaded, my kingdom powerful, you wave the white flag and send in your beggars and messengers. I allow them in attempts at peace, but they are only there to spread lies and hate. My kingdom once again crumbles as my own are turned from within.
I am forced to flee with my few remaining loyal soldiers, but after the endless battles they grow tired and old. I am unable to continue this crusade in hopes of finding the holy land - a place untainted by medals and hierarchy - I can only dream of it as my last soldier dies and I lay in my final resting place.
I guess this was always my fate, because I was born too late.
Shorter Chapter! I've been in a writing mood today. Was a bit stuck on how to start transitioning my story, but I hope you all like where I take it. Definitely prepare for a little angst and some drama to unfold.
Preparing a deer's hide was tedious work, but something you had grown to love doing with the tribe. You stood scrapping all the remaining fat and hair off the deer. All of the deers fat would be used in some way; the fat could be used in cooking, to eat and as an additive later to soften the hide. Earlier the brain had been carved out and was being mixed with some fat as you scrapped. Others were preparing to have some hides strung out to dry under the sun as it rose over the horizon. It was critical that these hides be treated well, the meat from the dear would feed the people and its hides would clothe them. With Zach and many other young children in the tribe growing new clothes were needed, but spending and trading what little money sent from Jasper and items they had in town would be useless. You had often wondered to yourself if this is why Jasper felt the need to go to war? Had he still felt the need to provide for you? Your pregnancy had definitely taken its toll on his nerves. As the day progressed you assisted the other women in their work and waited for your hide to dry.
Later that day your hide was still stiff, but had dried significantly. Mixing the deer's brain, fat and water, you rubbed it into the hide. Meticulously you rubbed ensuring the fat reached every corner and was distributed well. Although you had become a part of the tribe some time ago, you always felt scrutinised for having not grown up with them. Knowing often your insecurities - with the steep learning curve from the start - got the best of you, you often had to sit and remind yourself of how accepting and welcoming a vast majority of the tribe has been since your arrival. Rubbing mindlessly at the hide you felt a hand at your shoulder, “I think you’ve applied quite enough my friend!”
Laughing, you pulled your hand away and wiped it on your makeshift apron. Looking over at your closest friend Leah you smiled. “Must have just been swept away in thought.”
A knowing look and smile grew on Leah’s face. “What’s got your head in the clouds today? I couldn’t help but notice seeing a very giggly and dishevelled couple wandering back from the river last night.”
Slapping a hand over Leah’s mouth you squeaked, “Leah! Hush! Don’t need any more gossip around here. We were simply enjoying some cold water, that is all nothing to it.”
“Hmm. I’ll believe you when your face stops looking like a tomato. If you don’t want to tell your friend I understand! I guess we just aren’t as close as I thought.” Pouting and crossing her arms Leah sat on the ground and dramatically threw herself down. “I’ll just have to find someone else to tell the news I have to then! You know I wouldn’t want to bore you with too much gossip!”
Falling to your knees you sank to the grass below. “No! No! You are my dearest, bestest friend ever! I love your gossip! Please tell me!” If Leah understood one thing, it was how to make you beg to get information from her. She just rolled over into the grass and began to fiddle with some wildflowers. “Leah! Don’t be like that! If you insists on sulking though I guess I will have to leave you there all day”
Flipping over to face you, Leah seized both your wrists in her hands, “Fine! Since you dragged it out of me!” Pulling you down beside her to lay on the grass she began to whisper in your ear, “I’m pregnant!”
“Oh my god! Leah! That is great news!” Grabbing your friend you hug her tight and you both roll around giggling in the grass.
The rest of the day you and Leah discuss everything from baby names, to whose features they will get. Your hides are a little neglected and duties of the day done all together to have all the time in the world to chat. The remainder of the day is not quite as productive as the morning, but you can’t be more happy for your friend. As night nears and everyone begins to settle, it dawns on you that Aki has not been around all day. You wander looking for any trace of him. Everyone you ask either hasn’t seen him all day, or briefly saw him headed away from camp. After everything had grown dark and Zach was put to bed, you remained awake, something was eating at your nerves. It was unlike Aki to leave without warning, but also he was often called into urgent elders meetings that could go until sunrise.
Just before you were about to drift off outside your family teepee, you saw a white wolf stumbling from the tree line as day began to break. It had been quite some time since you had seen Aki’s transformation form, but you knew him anywhere. Standing you began to sprint towards the tree line. You hadn’t realised it, but you were screaming for help. Yelling to alert the tribe, because Aki’s fur was not a pure white, but stained with red and brown. Deep cuts and gashes ran along his body, and he had clearly fought something quite strong on his own. As you reached Aki, he had shifted back into his human form. Collapsing to the ground, you barely managed to cradle his massive body in your arms. Screaming, tears ran down your face. The village had been alerted by your cries, many of the warriors of the tribe had run out to investigate the commotion and others were standing at the camp's edge in disbelief. Aki was your strongest warrior and he had returned battered. You rocked his beaten body in your arms as your people ran to assist you, but all you could see was the fear on your son's face at the edge of camp through your tears.
