I think all live-action directors should have at least some experience with animation because the reason why Project Hail Mary is so visually stunning made so much sense when you find out that both of the directors have also written/directed some of the biggest animated movies of the last decade (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, the Spiderverse movies etc.) like those are people who fundamentally understand visual media. Fuck Christopher “I need to stop filming because a rainbow got into my shot” Nolan I need more directors who know how colours work.
okay but they ARE two different types of filmmaking. PHM was colorful and wonderful but Christopher nolan's cinematography is supposed to be gritty and gray. all these directors are wonderful filmmakers, who all have/deserve awards, but just do it in a different style.
inception, the odyssey, Dunkirk, (etc etc) and phm were both made with little-to-no cgi, and STILL came out beautifully cinematic. but the moods of both stories are so incredibly different in many ways-- nolan's cinematography is SUPPOSED TO NOT BE INCREDIBLY COLORFUL. MORE COLOR PRESENTS A HAPPIER SCENE. ryland grace going through adrien with rocky? wonderfully colorful. the buildings falling into the sea during inception? gray and dramatic.
there is a REASON for this.
