How to do well in a class taught by a crappy teacher
Weâve all been there at some point, and it especially sucks if youâre interested in the subject. Sorry this is long but I really hope it helps!
These are some things that bad teachers have in common, in my experience.
Qualities of a crappy teacher
relies entirely on videos to teach lessons
rarely, if ever, gives notes
doesnât give reviews for tests either or any clues as to what is actually on the test
if they do give notes, they are disorganized, scrappy, and ultimately meaningless
doesnât give straight answers when asked questions / answers questions with questions that donât even make sense
loses your homework/essays all the time
they are genuinely surprised when their students actually do well
tells students not to study a certain thing because it wonât be on the test. Then itâs on the test and youâre screwed.
when showing how to do a problem, they only do the easiest examples ever. Honestly. You would be blessed to get a problem that easy on the actual assignment, where there are now super complicated problems that you have no idea how to do!
the homework assignments they give donât help you understand the lesson better, itâs just a bunch of busy work.
they hand out a sheet, no explanation whatsoever, and say âalright. go do thisâ what? Go do what? Rip out my hair? I donât even know what stoichiometry is and now I have 55 minutes to do it. Fabulous.
if someone does something wrong, the teacher just makes them do it over again and again, without helping the student understand or explaining anything
they hand back your tests five decades after you actually took it. What was the test even on? Same deal with homework and worksheets
They often have a condescending behavior towards students and make students feel stupid when they get something wrong or ask questions
Now that youâve verified that you indeed have a crappy teacher, here are some tips to actually do well in their class. Impossible? Nope. But it will take more effort to get a good grade in this class and understand the material because you are now both the teacher and the student. (Sorry I talk about Khan Academy a lot, but at the same time, not that sorry because itâs a life saver).
Teach yourself lesson by lesson. If they wonât, you will. Make sure that you are learning the right material, so that you can ace your quizzes/ tests. Yes, it takes time, but it will be worth it once you can finally understand the class, I promise. You can teach yourself by relying on other sources to learn the material, such as the textbook you already have for the class, Khan Academy, and other online resources and study aids.
Donât rely only on their notes, study materials, or worksheets to study off of or understand the material. This doesnât mean you shouldnât use them, you should definitely pay attention to them, as it might give you a clue as to what is on the test. However, you should probably invest some time into making your own notes and study materials outside of class, whether the material is from your class textbook or online resources.Â
Khan Academy!!! (Itâs completely free and amazing) I honestly can not stress how many times Khan Academy has saved my life and my grades, especially in math and science subjects. If thereâs a lesson (or, letâs be honest, an entire class) that youâre having difficulty understanding, just go to KA and find the lesson and they will have videos that take you through it step-by-step. Also, you can pause and rewind the videos if you need to understand something better (unlike crappy teachers) and they do plenty of examples (unlike crappy teachers). I swear Iâm not sponsored by them or anything, itâs just a life saver! You can take classes on there in your free time too. For example, I couldnât fit a personal finance class into my school schedule, so Iâm taking it on KA.
Use online sites and resources to help you understand the material. Quizlet is an app for creating sets of flashcards. In my opinion, they are way more helpful than notecards, because they have games using the terms you put in and different methods of studying the material (by spelling, term, definition, etc). Duolingo is great for learning languages and maintaining your vocabulary in a language you are taking in school. You can use SparkNotes to better understand literature and poetry (they also have great studying/ test prep materials). Shmoop is another great resource for poetry. Khan Academy has lessons on math, science, art, music, history, and economics. The Purdue OWL is a life saver when it comes to writing essays; it has everything you need to know about grammar, writing techniques, format (especially MLA format), and mechanics. Basically, it has all the info your crappy teacher failed to give you.Â
STUDY. Good teachers go over the material enough to ensure that their students understand the material and they make sure the students are familiar with it. They will also usually go over the same materials in different ways, so that students with different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) can benefit. Crappy teachers? Not so much. Therefore, the material is not ingrained in your mind, so you need to work harder than in other classes to familiarize yourself with the material and make sure you understand it enough to recall the information and be tested on it.
Practice what youâve learned. Try to find practice quizzes and tests online on the subject and material you are learning. Sometimes there will be mini quizzes at the end of chapters in class textbook. Also, some of the online resources above have quizzes on the specific material.
Talk/ study with other people who are taking the same course or people you know who have taken the class in the past. If your friend is taking the same class as you but they have a different teacher, study with them and ask them for help and notes. If you know someone who has taken the class a previous semester or year, as them for help with the material and advice on tests and passing the class with a decent grade. You can also study with other people in your class, because it is likely that they are in the same position as you and you can all help each other out.
Good luck in your class and thanks for reading, I hope this helps somehow!
And this is tiktok we need

Little thesis week update from the past two days
Almost skipped archival volunteering on Monday to focus on writing but it ended up being the perfect break I needed and I once again had a blast
I have drunk (drank? god help me) more coffee in the past two days than I have in the past two months combined. Going to be an interesting week
Having actual stuff to do is making me strangely productive, I woke up at 6 am today to go swimming before going to the library? Whoâd have thought
I severely regret making notes of my readings in both Notion and my word document and I donât know when I became this chaoticÂ
Reading through a magazine article index with all the article topics from the 19th century has been the highlight of my week and I donât think that is a good thing (even though some of them are absolute gold)

How I graduated with a 4.0 GPA (aka Abitur 1,0)
(Repost because itâs âback-to-school-timeâ)
Here are some of my secret-not-so-secret tips:
Sit in the first row and nod whenever your teacher is saying something. This might sound like the stupidest tip ever, but it is effective. Warning: your classmates will think you are crazy. Your teacher, on the other hand, will think that you are very engaged in the topic and they will feel satisfied to see that their teaching is effective. Your oral mark will go up!
Ask to do presentations for extra credit. But donât be like âHey, Sir, Iâd like to do a presentation.â. Instead, try to give your teacher a clear idea of what you want to do, what your presentation would focus on, how long it would take etc.. This engagement will leave your teacher impressed because you show interest in the topic and have a clear idea of what you want to add to their teaching.
Turn in papers and essays your teacher didnât explicitly ask for. Again, your teacher will be very happy with how much effort you put into your work and you will get a great feedback. This is extremely important for language classes because you get corrected texts and these will be very important for the upcoming exams.
Donât care what anyone else is thinking. Iâm kind of shy and doing presentations, talking to teachers or sitting in the front row has always been a bit uncomfortable for me because I was scared of what my classmates and teachers were thinking. Eventually, I realized that what people thought of me would not be included in my resumĂ©, it would not be something my future employers would ask me about, it would not get me into Med or Law School, but my grades would. So I stopped caring.

GUIDE TO:
FIX YOUR SLEEPING SCHEDULE (1-2 months)
Try to wake up earlier every day. Like 5 - 10 min earlier than the day before. Until you wake up any time before 8am or soâŠ
If you struggle with waking up & snooze button is you bff:
Put your alarm clock as far away from the bed as possible.
Drink a glass of water right after you wake up.
Pour another glass of water on yourself right after you wake up.
Prepare some coffee the night before, leave it by your bedside, drink it after you wake up.
Have your blinds/curtains open, so that itâs bright after you wake up.
Try to go to bed 5-10 min earlier than the night before.
Track how many hours of sleep youâre getting. Aim to get at least 7h per day or 49h per week.Â
Increase your sleeping hours incrementally. Aim to get at least 1h of sleep more than the previous week. For example, if this week you slept for 41hrs, aim to get an extra hour of sleep next week, so itâs 42h.Once you get enough hours of sleep and wake up early-ish.
Try to keep your sleeping schedule consistent. It is really important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Â Even if itâs weekend. Or even if that means, you getting less than 7hrs of sleep that day. Iâd say waking up at the same time everyday is the most important step, which will help you the most with fixing your sleeping schedule.
START EATING HEALTHY (1-2 months)
This step really depends from person to person, but firstly I suggest you take some blood tests to see if you have any deficiencies, etc. Especially, if you struggle with cravings. Â
Try intermittent fasting, if you struggle with binge eating or overeating. As it will help you to learn to listen to your body better: when itâs hungry, when itâs full, etc. Itâs really simple, there are many methods of Intermittent fasting, but Iâd suggest 16/8 for the beginners. (Google it for more info)
DRINK ALL THE WATER. Again, if youâre not drinking enough water, try to level up your water game incrementally. Download some water tracking app on your phone to help you. Drinking water will make you more energetic, increase your metabolism, and decrease you appetite (among many more benefits).
Track what you eating. I would really suggest tracking your meals for around a month. Because, most of the time people have no idea that what theyâre eating is unhealthy. Again, download an app to your phone for that.
Make your own meals once in a while. Not only this will save you money, but itâll help you to see whatâs really going into your body.
Eat less meat and more veggies/fruits. Go to your local market and buy some veggies/fruits, you have never tried before. Iâm sure youâll find your new favs. Eat/buy less meat. Not only itâs good for the environment, but it is good for you, too. Get a veggie burger instead of the beef one, etc.
Cut dairy. Find your new favourite milk substitute. Advice: Oat milk is really good with the tea and oatmeal/porridge; hazelnut milk is amazing on itâs own; cashew milk goes well with cereals.
Learn more about nutrition in general. It will help you to make better food choices and it will make eating healthy much easier in general, because once you understand all the chemistry behind the food and what it does to your body, you kinda donât want to make yourself feel worse. Here are some free resources: - Human nutrition course from Alison.com - Crash course Metabolism&Nutrition: Part 1 and Part 2 - The Health Nerdâs YouTube Playlist about nutrition - What Iâve Learnt YouTube Playlist - Human nutrition course from Alison.com - Crash course Metabolism&Nutrition: Part 1 and Part 2 - The Health Nerdâs YouTube Playlist about nutrition - What Iâve Learnt YouTube Playlist
GET PHYSICALLY FIT (2-6 months)
Define your goals. Do you want to lose weight, do you want to get stronger, gain weight, be able to climb stairs without losing breath, run 5k?
Remember - youâre half-way through. Being physically fit has a lot to do with what you put into your body. So, if you fulfilled the previous step of eating healthy - you are half way through!
Make a plan. A Reasonable plan. Be honest with yourself.
Start small. Like, 5 min exercise in the morning. Or doing 10 sit ups per day. Donât do anything overwhelming, like running 5k everyday if you havenât run for the past 5 years.
Make sure that you kinda like what youâre doing. If you absolutely hate running - donât do it. Hate doing sit ups in the morning? Try some yoga instead.
Explore until you find what you like. You donât have to go to gym to get fit, especially if you hate it. Find a type of exercise, which you actually like. Maybe itâs dancing or hiking, taking your dog for a walk. Sign up for several trial lessons of various sport clubs. Ditch âem if you have them until you find something that you love. Stick with that.
Do the small changes in your everyday life. Stairs>Escalator, Walk>Drive, Do some squats while brushing your teeth, switch from regular desk to standing desk, etc⊠ Find ways to incorporate being active into your everyday life
Track your effort instead of your progress. You cannot really control your progress that much (especially if your goal was to lose weight). However, you can always control your effort. So track it instead. This will leave you more motivated. As you will be able to see that you can do more and more everyday. Whereas, if you tracked your progress, you may not always get the result you hoped for, which might demotivate you and make you upset, wanting to quit.
BEAT DEPRESSION
Do the previous 3 steps and youâre half way through.
See a therapist/doctor. Depression is an illness, requiring medical treatment. So, get it. Remember: there is absolutely no fucking shame in having a mental illness.
Get some extra support. Talk to your friends or family. Or maybe someone on the internet.
Write it out. If you donât want to talk - write down your thoughts. It can be just as helpful. Itâll help you to understand yourself better, see problems in your thinking, etc.
Distract yourself from yourself. Get someone/something to take care of, so that you can, for a moment, stop thinking about yourself and focus on something else. E.g, get a plant, or a dog, or a fish.
Self-care day. Dedicate at least one day per week for self-care. Take yourself out, either to a museum or some fancy cafe, do some stuff you like, whatever your hobbies are, do some physical self care: bath, face mask, manicure, etc., listen to some nice music, watch a filmâŠ..
STOP PROCRASTINATION
Celebrate your victories instead of mourning over your loses. So the only thing youâve done today was write one sentence for your 20 page essay? Amazing! Buy yourself a candy for that!! I mean, you couldâve done nothing, but you didnât - you wrote that one sentence and thatâs worth celebrating.
Do it for only 2 minutes. If thereâs an important thing youâve been putting off for a while, tell yourself that you will only spend 2 minutes on doing it. If after 2 minutes you donât want to do it anymore, great, stop it. However, after 2min. you actually might want to do more. No pressure either way.
Track your productivity. Track how much time youâve been productive that day. Try to increase that time by a little bit every day.
Always forgive yourself. So, itâs been a week and youâve done nothing? Donât sweat it. Let it go. Blaming yourself will bring you absolutely nothing. Nothing good will come out of your negativity on yourself. So stop it. Forgive yourself and start again. And again, if you need to. Never stop trying. Always pick yourself after you fall. Beating procrastination and increasing your discipline is a skill. And all skills can be build on. There is nothing in you stopping you from changing. Remember that.
LEARN HOW TO DO TAXES (1h - 1 day)
Go to google.com.
Type in: âHow to do taxes *the name of the country youâre living in*â
Read the results.
GET MENTALLY STRONG ENOUGH TO MAKE PHONE CALLS
Remember that just as with beating procrastination, making phone calls is a skill. And, again, skills can be learnt.
Get a new SIM card.
Top it up.
Dial some random numbers and pretend to be a salesman, selling whatever you like.. E.g., trying to sell broadband, cable tv, trying to get people to donate for some charity⊠Or whatever really⊠Me and some friends used to pretend weâre selling kittens or wood logs. Alternatively, you can pretend that you dialed a wrong person and talk about whatever, e.g. âHey, Jess!! You wont believe what I saw today!! *start telling a made-up story*âŠâ
If you get uncomfortable - just drop the call. No consequences whatsoever.
Repeat until you build up your game and your phone-call anxiety starts to diminish.
SLAY THOSE BITCHES Congratulations, now youâre ready to take over the world! Got get âem!!
