Basics Every Girl Needs to Have in Her Closet : Part 1
There's a saying my Aunt always told me: "Buy what you NEED, not what you WANT." This may be one of the few situations where this applies.
To put together a polished look, one needs 3 things, 1.) Classic (where the basics come in) 2.)Statement 3.) Accent (accessories). In my opinion, it's very difficult for an outfit to look polished without any classic pieces. Sometimes, an outfit lacking a classic piece comes off as gaudy, cheap, or just a little too hard on the eyes.
So, every girl needs the following for her closet:
Bottoms:
Jeans: Need I say more?
Skinny Cargo Pants: Which actually may sound a bit weird and too...'Lara Croft' on Tomb Raider, but these babies are actually a great jeans alternative! I wore them pretty much most of the winter and they matched with anything! It's a great way to be fashion forward yet not too outlandish! Great with combat boots, oxfords, flats, pretty much any shoe! Definitely a more fashion-forward choice than just plain jeans.
Black & Khaki shorts: Neutral. Need I saw more? Grab an affordable pair at H&M.
Skorts: A bit weird sounding, but a good way to be functional yet feminine at the same time! Beats having to cross your legs the whole time whilst sitting down!
Jeggings: Practically takes up ZERO room in the suitcase, it also looks just as well as skinny jeans. I suggest getting several styles.
Skirts: I suggest getting some in black/white first & an A-Line type. Then move on to more brighter colors and patterns.
A Pair of Corduroys- Understated sophistication for the minimalists.
Tights: Hoisery is probably one of the easiest things to layer regardless of the occasion. I suggest try the black ones first, then move on to more unique styles.
Leggings: A woman's best friend on I'm-too-lazy-too-pick-an-outfit days. Can be easily dressed up with a leather jacked and slouchy tee, T-shirt dress, the options are almost limitless.
Tip of the Day: Finding the Right Shoe
Wearing the wrong shoes not only will hurt, but it will also show up on your face.
Don't compromise style over comfort. Simple tip, but hard to follow.
Make you know what type of feet you have. Do you have wide or narrow feet? Do you have a high arch? Knowing these things will help you decide on what kind of shoes you need to start buying.
Always consider the cost per wear. I cannot advocate enough that one should consider how many times they will wear the shoes and if it will ultimately pay for itself. That way, this stops you from making impulse purchases.
Don't be afraid to splurge. I'm a cheapskate till the end, but shoes are one of the only things I will splurge on. Why? Because ultimately, shoes will last you a lot longer than last season's plaid parka. Your size will less likely fluctuate as well, so investing in a durable pair will save you buckets of $$ in the long run.
Shop for shoes late in day. This is when feet have swollen and are at their largest.
Never settle for shoes JUST BECAUSE they are cheap. I used to do this all the time, when I realized that the cheaper pair actually did not last as long as its more expensive counterparts, therefore, their cost-per-wear ratio vs the more expensive pair was actually higher.
If the shoe in question is for a special occasion, break them in. Wear them several times around the house in your spare time.
Sandpaper shoe soles. This will prevent you the embarrassment of slipping.
Remember, comfort, color, fabric, design, and heel size should be considered on the occasion and use.
