But, man, the bigger deal for me is that I feel nothing. I don’t really care about this show anymore. Like, I watched the episode with Garnet doing drugs and acting a damn fool and thought it was good. And too late. It’s too late for the story to ever be any kind of coherent.
I figured I’d use the “big reveal” episodes as a sort of litmus test for my investment in this shit. Long story short, low AF.

This is actually a fantastic point. What is the range on this ability for example? Is it limited to planetary teleportation or can they send it anywhere in the universe?
If that is the case then could they teleport things from Homeworld to Earth? Could they port LARS and the Off Colors to earth like this? If they can, why haven’t they done this episodes ago already?

HONESTLY! This is what I've been saying! Not only did Steven not care, but neither did Connie. She doesn't even know that Lars might not need food or water. So she just ran off with his only source of either. And all this is going on while they're still kind of at war. Like, I get they're kids, but.. Get your shit together. For the good of literally everyone else.

Lars literally sacrificed his LIFE for him and Stephen’s so self centered and feels so entitled to it that he doesn’t even show any sort of gratitude for Lars in the slightest. He takes one hundred percent advantage of Lars’ selflessness and uses it to live a normal life all the while Lars is taken the fall for him on homeworld.
THINK about that. LARS is doing more to fight Homeworld then STEPHANO is. Lars has lost more in this whole thing then Steven has.
And the worst part is Steven’s not gonna get ANY blowback for this. He’s gonna be portrayed as 100% in the right and their will be absolutely NO repercussions for his selfishness.
tl;dr,
Ayo, fuck this dumb show. I know this is normally where I say something longwinded and pretentious, but, no, fuck it. The last bomb was a bunch of decent episodes, but who the fuck cares? It made all the characters even worse. Especially Steven. Fuck ‘em.
so they completely abandoned Sadie’s performance anxiety they dedicated an episode to establishing but the worldbuilding and development in lowkey episodes is really important guys there’s no filler in this show

I think they just didn’t decide on a solid look for YD for a good long while. It’s getting more concrete each time it seems, but....yeah, shit’s noticeable.

my main issue with the “bombs” is that they seem disconnected from the rest of the storyline. like, for example, the out of this world arc implies the diamonds will come to earth soon (yd: “has the cluster emerged yet?” sapphire: “no it has not” yd: “then there’s still time”), and then it just bounces us back to steven’s misadventures on the boardwalk™ not long afterwards.
like, we get these seemingly huge plot revelations/conflicts (i.e., the sardonyx arc, which in itself is pretty messily written and a whole other issue but i digress), and it’s almost as if packaging it all up into a “bomb” is an obligation to squash and condense all the conflict resolution into five consecutive episodes, so in the end it just kinda feels like…“oh remember that one time steven and the gang visited homeworld? well now that that plotline is done we can just cast it aside and find a new plotline to individually address!”
good stories and good writing typically involve several overarching conflicts that, sure, are addressed one-on-one from time to time, but also intertwine with other conflicts instead of being put into a box and isolated from the rest of the story to address only once (and only within a constrained time period) and not pick up again. especially if the conflict touches upon/affects multiple characters, à la the sardonyx bomb that had the one (1) garnet episode™ and the one (1) amethyst episode™ and briefly, barely touched on their feelings about the whole situation at hand. condensing conflicts into five eleven-minute chunks just doesn’t do huge plot revelations justice.
it shouldn’t be “oh this is the obligatory conflict resolution episode!” it should be something that is addressed and developed over time until it culminates into a climax before a resolution is thrown in. i understand that the show has time constraints already, so there’s really no point in further constraining yourself by making sure a conflict is laid out and solved within five episodes.
Ayy this. Half of the episodes make no sense standalone anyway. I can't believe that the **writers** don't understand that the point of having a plot is to have things in the story relate to that plot.

As for white writers and POC, my simple answer is if it’s good, I don’t give a damn who wrote it. In theory, that works. In practice however...it doesn’t always work well.
My opinion is that white authors that make things with POC characters can do a good job, but usually only if the character HAPPENS to be black or asian or latinx or whatever. You could argue that it’s cutting them off from their culture, but I think that’s bullshit. I know plenty of POC that live secular western lives and never think about culture or don’t even feel they have one. And that’s fine. There’s no wrong way to be what you feel like you are if you aren’t harming others, and minorities are not a monolith. Only if it’s a just cause thing though. White people making POC characters because they’ve got a quota to fill is lame AF. You can spot it from a mile away because it’s always forced and weird.
That said, if a lot of the character’s struggles are race related or even if they exist within a culture very different than the author, it’s probably better avoided for a white author. Not because i hate white people. I love lots of white people. Shit, I been kissin white girls since 2004. But I think people, especially POC, look for white people to fuck up shit like that. Why start out with a bias against you, y’know? Plus, yeah, if you do fuck it up it’s gonna come across as being pretty disrespectful, like you couldn’t even bother to get a different perspective or do proper research. This ain’t 1939 and that “ah don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies,” shit doesn’t fly anymore. Then again, I like white boy Arthur Golden’s “Memoirs of a Geisha”. But you know who doesn’t like that book? Geisha. While the care taken in accurately portraying Japanese cultural understanding and social structure, geisha feel that his book casts an unfairly negative light on their notoriously secretive lives. Also, he kind of fucked over Mineko Iwasaki, the ex-geisha he interviewed for background info, and that’s no good.
Personally, as an artist, I think it’s at least a little in bad taste to try and tell stories you aren’t invested in or aren’t yours to tell. I’m Afro-Arab (among other things, holy hell am I a mutt) on my mother’s side, and some of my favorite books, Hirsi Ali’s “Infidel” and Draper’s “Copper Sun” are by black female authors writing about something they felt was theirs to tell. You don’t get that kind of passion without some kind of investment.
Eh, at the end of the day, people do what they want and make what they want anyway, and I just hope that some small fraction of it is good or at least interesting and not shit.

Do you think Steven Universe as a whole is racist or certain elements within the show can be considered an act of racism? I promise I won’t shame you for your answer, whatever it is, just wondering what y'all think.
Nah, I don’t think SU is racist. It’s got a pretty diverse group of characters, cast, and crew. That is not what racism looks like. If it were, better believe everybody on the crew besides homegirl would be a white man like 90% of shows made in America.
I think the show’s just negligent and lazy as hell. Like, take Garnet. What she LOOKS like is a black woman. She is not. This means the show simultaneously does and does not have a black woman as a main character. Combine this with poor character writing that has left Garnet as a caricature of her formerly established and well rounded personality, abandoned for a passive role where she only wants to protect the white Jesus child, and we’re left with a textbook example of a Magical Negro character. This could easily be solved by giving her hobbies, goals, and interests that have little to nothing to do with Steven (like a certain pale and thin Crystal Gem has plenty of, mind you), but the writers didn’t do any of that shit, so this is what we got.
Is it racism? Nah. Lapis Lazuli has been in this show since the first fucking season and doesn’t even have a set personality and Peridot went from Forge to Jar Jar Binks as soon as that fuckin drill was finished. The writing is bad and bad writing causes problems.
Garnet is NOT black. The sooner you start seeing that, the sooner you can see her character as something more. She wants to protect Steven because she loves him, I can guarantee she doesn’t care about his race. It isn’t a black character protecting a white one.
Yes, Garnet has been given unfair and bad writing recently, that I agree with.
I really don’t see how this show is racist by intent. Concrete was an accident, a poorly thought out rushed accident, but intent is a key factor.
....did you even read what I wrote? I said she's not black at the top of the second damn paragraph. I said "I don't think SU is racist" in the first damn sentence.
And Garnet's character is hardly "more" than a dark skinned lady that exists to keep Steven safe with her magic future powers. Of course she doesn't care what they both look like; that wasn't my point. The point is that Garnet is a dark skinned character that has no role or interests in the show besides caring for Steven, and on a secondary level, the earth. That's not her MAIN goal, that's her ONLY goal. That kind of shit looks bad to a lot of people, especially when comparing her to Pearl. I personally don't see racism, but there's a reason other people do.
