Trying to introduce a friend to whump as I think they will love it. They're into power dynamics, abusive dynamics, hurt with or without comfort, basically no holds barred in terms of trigger warnings.
Looking for recommended art and especially written whump works that highlight how great whump is - probably short but with a master list to find more similar pieces.
Ideally not fandom based since they are not super heavy in fandom. Their biggest fandom is I think one piece?
Danny is the victim again, because they think heâs the villain.

These are my old arts btw. Created an account here before but deactivated it and now I'm in here again. Lol. Found these in the net. Does not guarantee I'll have this exact same style again tho.

âStop, please! Please donât hurt me!â
âAh shoot, sorry.â The boy drops his scalpel like itâs gone red hot. It clinks awkwardly onto the linoleum floor next to my leg, catching the light from a nearby rune.
Confused, I blink up at him. I donât have many other options, in terms of body language, at this point, with my hands chained above me, close enough I can brush my pinkies against one another, and my legs splayed on either side of the new kid, the pants damp with the humidity and my own blood. Nice cell, as far as they go, but the tile floorâs a real germ trap and even after a quick wash the night before, most of my blood is still congealed on my body.
âI-Iâm sorry.â He picks up the scalpel with trembling fingers. âI didnât mean to drop that. Let me try this again.â
He places the tip of the blade against my skin, then holds it there without enough pressure to draw blood while he consults a piece of paper, creased all over from a million folds and written in cramped handwriting. Did he⊠did he write down what he plans to do to me? What kind of serial sadist is this? âIâm just going to give you a few cuts,â he murmurs, at last leaning onto the blade and carving a line down my arm.
I donât mind the hot flash of painâmuchâbut he was so funny the first time so I make my eyes roll back in my head and crack my voice. âP-please!â The sound echoes in the lofty space.Â
âI could concentrate better if you didnât speak.â Another line joins the first. Heâs close enough I can lean forward and see the piece of paper thatâs so enthralled him, including the shape heâs drawn there: a name, I think, maybe two. Thatâs hardly unusual. Iâve have names carved into me in writing systems that donât even exist anymore.
I change tact. âWhat are you going to do to me?âÂ
Serial killers, they like that question. Puts you completely in their power, strokes their egos, the whole nine yards. The boy, though, and I canât imagine heâs over twenty years old, not with hair that floppy and poorly styled, doesnât react with pleasure or even annoyance that Iâve spoken. Instead, doubt flickers across his face, and then he blushes, a little red to his cheeks that I wouldâve missed if the dungeon lights were but a shade dimmer. âIâm going to hurt you a little bit,â he says, tongue between his teeth as he finishes carving his shape into my arm. Heâs not practiced at this and the wounds are all different levels of deep.
âWhy? I never hurt you.â
âBecause I want to.âÂ
He looks like heâd rather be locked in a room somewhere putting together a two thousand piece jigsaw puzzle but hey, sometimes youâre chained to the dungeon wall, sometimes youâre doing the chaining, itâs all about rolling with the punches.Â
He stands, tugging at the chains above me so Iâm forced to my feet, leaning heavily when one foot goes completely to sleep. Youâd think that would be less painful than the still-bleeding wound on my inner arm, but youâd be wrong. Knives have a beauty to them, a finesse that simple circulation lacks. âOkay.â He says it like heâs psyching himself up. âIâm going to⊠Iâm going to hit you, I think.â
âAre you asking me or telling me?â It just slips out. Look, the first couple sadists leave an impression and after that, I stop grading on a curve. He wants me intimidated, he should be more intimidating.
It irks him, though. He tugs down the bottom of his shirt and straightens. âYes. Iâll⊠Iâll beat the backtalk right out of you.â Given it takes him thirty seconds to figure out how to put the brass knuckles on, I donât exactly have high hopes. Plus, his postureâs all off. After he punches me once and nearly throws himself into the wall, he switches to a cane and sort of whacks at my ankles.
In a better mood, I might try to dodge, but heâs so weak, heâs not going to break anything. âIâm your first, arenât I?â
âShut up.â He gets the cane caught between my legsâI swear I wasnât even trying to get in the wayâand drops it.Â
âHere I thought Iâd be the one kneeling at your feet.â He glares daggers up at me, costing him precious time padding about for his cane. âWhile youâre down there, you could give the olâ boots a good lick, eh?â Iâm barefoot and wiggle my toes a bit to prove it, but he shoots up like someone fired him out of a canon.
âI will never bow to you.â
I pout. âWhatever you say, big dog.â
The anger makes his beating, if anything, more sporadic. I think the wallâs in more pain than me when, panting, he takes a step back to surveil me. âThat felt better, I think. Theyâre right, it can feel good.â
âWhoâs right?â
âIt doesnât matter.â
âIf you tell me, I will show you how to use a cane to properly cause someone pain.â
âLike youâd know,â he sneers, mopping sweat off his brow. The caneâs about to fall from his hands unless he takes a rest, I figure, and he concurs, slumping to the floor well out of reach and going for a water bottle. Proper hydration: very important for the enterprising serial sadist.Â
Though now that Iâm here, Iâm beginning to doubt the serial part of that title. So much for ridding the city of its serial killer on the first try, huh? If Archer beats me to a win by going the legal route, Iâm going to throw myself into the ocean.Â
After a bit of R&R, heâs ready for another go, but itâs cautious interest I see in his eyes. âWell?â he demands, tapping a foot. The arms crossed could be a good look, but he shouldâve put the cane down first. âTell me, then.â
âFirst tell me who they is.â
His eyes narrow but heâs never taken a negotiation courseâsuch courses generally indicate that the party who is chained to the wall has less bargaining powerâbecause he folds right away. âThe other Mu-9s.â
âIs that supposed to mean something?â
âYou said youâd teach me.â
âAll right, then. You see that table?â I have to nod towards it, my hands being where they are. âItâs for strapping people to.â
âItâs too short.â
âAu contraire. Itâs not for waterboarding, itâs for foot torture. Move it over here. Yep, until itâs touching the wall, good. Okay, letâs see if I still have the abs for this.â I clench my fingers around the manacles and haul myself up and sideways, half over the table. He sees what Iâm trying to do and helps me the rest of the way, still holding the cane even after it bops him in the forehead. âNow youâd traditionally strap my ankles to the corners.â What a relief, not to have to stand anymore. When I get a choice, Iâll sit through a torture anytime, even if the table feels kind of rickety. As an added bonus, Iâve earned a little slack in the arm chains, so I could feasibly start unlocking them, were I inclined. âThe feet have as many nerves as the hands do and unlike other parts of the body, they donât acclimate to repeated beatings, so the hundredth lash hurts as much as the first. You want to strike closer to the arch than the heels or toes, and at an angle. Yes, hold the cane like that. And then twist all the way around and think about activating your stomach muscles as you-ah! Yeah, like that.â
At my cry, his grip loosens and he almost drops the cane again. This kid, I swear.Â
âYou need to be careful with foot torture. I can walk on anything that isnât broken but regular folks, any more than fifty or so and they wonât be able to walk on them. You also always want to-ah, yes. Thank you for that. You want to make sure-ow, see, that was my toe. Do you want to break bones or do you want to cane me? Make up your mind, kid.â
His shoulders are heaving. For a second, I think heâs going to stab me with the blunt end of his cane but he takes a step back and composes himself. âI should know this,â he whispers. âI should understand this.â
I take a stab in the dark. âIs that what they told you?âÂ
âThey said evil people like me, we would like it. They told me⊠this was what I was made for.â
âYou know what that sounds like?â
âNo.â He looks up, all curious-like. Maybe twenty was an overly optimistic estimate for age.
âSounds like someone is trying to mind control you.â
âWhat?â
âJust in general, if someone is telling you youâre evil, thatâs a sign theyâre manipulating you.â
âI am evil. Iâm a Mu-9.â
âRi-ight.â
âI-Iâm hurting you! I cut my name into your arm!â
I glance at the wound. âIs that what it says? Niklo? Is that your name?â
âIt doesnât matter. Your opinion doesnât matter.â
âI showed you the foot caning, didnât I? Tell me about these people.â Since weâre settling down, now, I use the slack in my chains to unscrew the pin holding the manacles around my left wrist in place. Careful practice means I snag it before it can fall open. âTheyâre not Mu-9s, right?â
He whacks me again, on the knee, which is not how I showed him and doesnât particularly hurt.Â
I make a few educated guesses, based on the size of the dungeon and how often he references a group of people. âYouâre not the only or first one theyâve sent here to torture someone, right?â
âYou wouldnât understand.â
âMu-9s are, what? Some sort of torture school? And theyâre letting you practice on the sorts of people no one will miss?â Torture schools are all the sameâthe grey sisters used to snag orphans and widows to practice on, if the dungeons ever got too empty.Â
âWeâre evil.â
âSays who?â
His chin is wobbling as he collapses against the wall, fingers loose enough that the cane rolls away and clatters across the floor. âItâs a gene, right? The Mu-9 gene? It makes people sadists, psychopaths.â
Weâre about to have a chat, so I stop holding the manacles shut and place my hands in my lap. âDo you know what a gene is?â
âItâs in your DNA.â If heâs noticed Iâm no longer tied up quite so well, he doesnât let on.
âA gene tells your proteins how to-tell you what. You ever folded paper to make an animal?â
Everyone in this city has; the cranes decorate every other street corner.
âA gene is like the instructions to make a paper animal. A single gene canât make you a psychopath, nor can they create a world with embedded moral laws and a black and white system of ethics.â
âWhat?â
ââEvil,ââ I scoff. âWhatâs that mean? Who decides?â
âI guess I donât know.â
âExactly. Tell me more about these folks who are mind controlling you.â
âThey tested us at school.â His gaze goes up and over my left shoulder. âThey took all the Mu-9s away, said since we were evil anyway, we might as well put it to good use. I didnât kidnap you. I didnât even want a, you know.â
âI do not.â
âA woman,â he mouths. âI wouldnât normally hurt a girl.â
I snort. How kind.
âThey told me where to find you, gave me this.â He gestures at his bag of pain-inducing equipment. âSaid Iâd know what to do.â
âSo you found a woman tied up in a dungeon and decided to carve your name into her arm?â
âThey had us plan it first. The therapists, they ask us again and again. What would you do, if someone was in your power? And whenever I said Iâd never hurt them, she says of course I would, Iâm evil, what would I do? She wouldnât stop asking so I made it up, I said I-Iâd carve my name into their arm and then Iâd beat them and she asked me again and again everyday until I had it memorized, and then she made me write it downâŠâ Futily, he waves the paper in my direction. âMaybe Iâve done this before. I donât even know.â
âIâm going to hazard a guess that this is, in fact, your first time.â
He starts to cry. You know whatâs worse than a proper good caning? When people cry in front of you, and this culture says women are supposed to be all motherly and caring too, so I know he expects me to help him out.Â
Sighing, I say, âYouâre most likely not evil. You are being mind controlled, though, so Iâd recommend doing something about that.â
âI canât leave. I canât. They said⊠they said if I left, the regs would kill me. They can see what I am.â
Fuck me, itâs a cult situation, isnât it? A torture murder death cult. Just my luck. âUh huh.âÂ
âThis is the only thing Iâm good at,â he whispers, standing again and going for the cane. âIf I canât show them Iâm good at this, theyâll make me leave and the regs will burn me alive. I need to be good at this.â
âIfââ
âAnd you,â he snarls, âneed to shut up.â
I mime zipping my lips. He realizes, for the first time, that my hands are free. Iâd like to say the beating I got in punishment was nice, but it was average at best, and I couldâve done without the angry tirade. He leaves me an hour later, bruised and bleeding, still sitting on that wobbly table, but I see a logo on the wall outside before he shuts the door: SomatiCorp.
Cult victim convinced he needs to become a sadist to survive, windowless dungeon with gross tile floor, and a company name in camel case.Â
Common tropes: forced to watch, reversed power dynamics (the person who appears to be in control is not), betrayal, emotional whump / moral torture, brainwashing, masochism, immortal whumpees and whumpers
General TW (specifics on each post): Five can hurt / kill herself and respawn uninjured, and in general, she doesnât mind doing so for convenience. This is a recurring theme. Iâve never hurt someone in front of an audience before. It feels like Lhamu is judging me from her chair in the corner, her hair pulled back and high, her fingers busy on a drop spindle. After I place Nautiliusâ lunch on the floor and loosen the restraints on his arms slightly so he has to kneel down and lick it up, I wave a hand in front of her face and, all politeness, she looks up.
âYouâre just staying here?â I demand.
âWould you prefer I leave?â
âYes.â
She stands without a sound. âIâll be outside.â
âWhy?â I donât mean to explode at her, but two days treating Nautilus like a plaything to fulfill only my own desires has made it harder to temper my anger. Huh. Wonder if torture has long-term effects on all parties, not just the victims. Thatâs not annoying or anything. âYou donât need to be here at all.â
âYou seem like you need company.â
âIâm fine.â
Lhamu nods once, curt. âLike I said, Iâll be outside.â
Growling, I step between her and the door, half expecting to see a hint of fear flicker across her face but she doesnât react except to take a step back, expression so neutral, I know she must be hiding something. âYou should go. Forever.â
âYou appear to be going through the worst part of your short life. I am, to my chagrin, technically qualified in post-trauma mind healing and leaving you means breaking my vows, or at least bending them.â
âYou tried to stop me already,â I remind her. On the ground, Nautilus gags on a piece of stale bread, twisting to one side as far as the chains will allow him so he can keep it in his mouth and chew it into smaller bites. This amused me so much the first day and now his bright red cheeks, barely visible behind the blindfold, mean almost nothing. âIâm not going to let him go.â
âI know, and I canât stop you from doing whatever you want. Even if I could, youâre immortal and clearly hold a grudgeââshe nods behind her at Nautilusââso I assume youâd take it out on my descendants. Iâm just here to make sure youâre okay, and to talk, when youâre ready.â
I sneer at her, but when I back away from the door, she understandsârightlyâthat she can stay, if she wants, and she sits again. I pull Nautilus away from the last of his starvation rations by his hair, eliciting a yelp that turns quickly into a whineâhe knows what happens if he makes people noises around me, and if he tries to resist, so he remains limp as I tighten the chains around his wrists and pull him snug against the wall. âAfter all he did, how do you still care about him?â
âI donât.â
This is surprising enough that I stop, midway through heating a dull knife in a candleâs flame. It burns my own skin, not that I mind.
âHeâs a body to me, a pile of flesh and bone and blood and organs that I could make work moreâor lessâefficiently in a variety of different ways.â
âHow very analytical of you.â I wave the heated knife near Nautilusâ bare chest, enjoying the way he can feel it and tries to flinch away, despite the wall behind him.
âWhen I was six or so, my mother found me outside, staring at a rabbit pinned to a tree branch by a hawk. The bird tore away strips of flesh and skin while the thing still wriggled, trying to be free. She thought me scared and tried to take me away, but I explained that, since I knew the rabbit was too far away for me to save or kill, Iâd simply enjoyed watching its pain. She realized that day that I would become a healer or a killer, and she guided me aptly towards the former.â
I put the knife down before I can carve my name into Nautilusâ chest for a third time. âYou enjoy pain?â
âImmensely so. As a healer, almost everyone I treat is having their worst day and they donât mind if the person saving their life is a tad acerbic. A perfect fit. My mother was truly a genius.â
I step aside, gesturing for her to join me. âThen why donât you help?â
âAh.â She purses her lips. âI happen to believe torture is morally wrong.â
âYou just said youâre a sadist.â
âYes,â she agrees.
âSo?â
âMy personal enjoyment of an act has little to no bearing on its morality.â
âMy whole life, humans have done whatever they wanted to me. They didnât care whether I liked it. Sometimes, they enjoyed it more because I didnât.â
âYes, and I believe all those acts were immoral as well.â
âBut me hurting Nautilus, that makes me as bad as him, is that it?â
Lhamu snorts, rolling her eyes. âIs it wrong to shove an old man to the ground?â
âSure.â
âIs it also wrong to shove him into a frozen lake so he drowns?â
âYes.â
âSo the same action in different contexts can be a different degree of immoral.â
I frown at her. How did my torture session turn into a lecture on moral philosophy? And why donât I mind?
âEven if I donât agree with you, I find your actions entirely understandable. I donât believe you are a risk to those who havenât hurt you, which is why I am comfortable remaining near you so, when youâre done extracting your revenge from Nautilus, someone is there to help you find your footing again.â
âWould you heal him, if I asked?â
âIf you threatened to kill me, I would.â
I purse my lipsâshe knows full well I wonât, not after everything sheâs done for me. âIf you were me, what would you do?â
âI suppose that depends on whether you believe in determinism or indeterminism. If I were you, I would, in a deterministic universe, do exactly the same thing as you.â
I cross my arms.
âYes,â she admits. âI do understand what you mean. Morally speaking, you should let him go. His empire has fallen, he cannot take it back. Let him live out the rest of his days somewhere far away, with as much happiness as he can muster.â
âHow fair to all his victims.â
She shrugs. âThe longer I live, the more I realize punishment for punishmentâs sake is nothing. It does nothing.â
âYouâd think you were the one chained to my wall,â I scoff, turning away, which, in Sign, is akin to ending the conversation. My knife has cooled now, but it still hurts as I trace the tip from the base of his neck and down his chest, occasionally drawing blood, but mostly just appreciating the hitch in his breath. Near the top of his skirt, I shave a small patch of skin, a new canvas for the brand I dreamed of last night: the pictogram of a hawk. It requires more delicate tools than the knife and as I heat them, clattering about against the brazier as much as I can just to watch Nautilusâ shoulders go higher and higher around his ears, I imagine baby Lhamu staring up at a hawk eating a rabbit alive. She couldnât prevent that violence and so she watched, just as she is now, happy, perhaps, that she is unable to keep me from my revenge, even as she condemns me as immoral.
When I press the first heated coil against Nautilusâ stomach, his knees buckle and he wails, the voice muted in the cramped cell. I press the brand in harder until the scream breaks into something more wobbly, a soft mewl of acceptance. I never did that. From almost day one, Iovita made it clear that noises were not permitted so I donât have much experience hearing myself break. Besides, when I test the brand on my own arm, it doesnât hurt much. Heâs a big baby. A couple more months of this and maybe Iâll have created someone as inured to pain as I am.
I return the coil to its nest of coals until itâs once again red. When I go to remove it, though, my hand betrays me and I drop it to the stone floor, catching it with a foot before it can roll. When was the last time I dropped something because it was too hot to hold? Years, surely, back when I was a terrified little thing, curled up in my cell and wondering how Iâd survive immortality in a place like this.
At the sound, Nautilus curled up too, as much as the chains allow him, and it hits me, hits me like a punch to the gut: heâs me. Theyâre all me. I have hurt myself in every way imaginable, and been hurt in ways I never even thought of, so I know pain more intimately than I know anything else about the world with the possible exception of prime numbers. I suffer, and I do it beautifully, and begrudgingly, and eagerly, and his pain is identical to mine, identical to Cassianâs and Liviaâs and Lhamuâs. We all suffer the exact same way.
I could break him, train him to be a subject or a lapdog or the perfect servant, but unlike Lhamu, I cannot turn him into a simple body, no mind within. The expression on his face is one I have worn before, and I hated it.
With a scream, I fling the brazier over, spilling coals across the floor. Nautilus jumps, sensing heat but unsure where it is, and Lhamu carefully stands and walks over to the door before the hem of her dress can catch fire.
âHeâs me,â I snarl at her. âIovita did the same to me, in this very building, and I killed her for it, and now I do the same to him?â
She blinks.
âIf I let him go, he wins. He gets away with it. He hurt me, he hurt Cassian, he tried to subjugate two different peoples, and now I get to decide whether he gets away with it.â
âHe clearly didnât. Look at him.â
He is a mosaic of wounds, bruises clustered around his neck and face, cuts along the arms and down the fingers, burns and long slashes across his broad chest.
âIf I let him go, it wonât bring Cassian back.â
âNeither will killing him.â
She says it like itâs nothing, but I take it like a slap. âCassian is dead and gone forever.â
âYes,â she agrees.
âI will live with the effects of what he did to me forever.â
âYou are immortal. Itâs hard to say how it will affect you, but most likely yes.â
âItâs not fair.â I kick at a coal, sending it spinning across the room. âThey get to hurt people and I donât.â
âYes, so sad for you. Perhaps more self pity will help.â
I glare at her. Aloud, I say, âIâm going to unchain you and let you go.â
Nautilus starts at the sound of my voice, casting about behind his blindfold.
âCount to one hundred before you leave the cell. Iâll make sure the grey women know to treat you like a patient, not a prisoner.â
âT-thank you.â
âFuck you. I hope you rot.â Using my feet, I herd the embers into one corner where people are less liable to trip on them and fish the key out of my pocket so I can let him go. Heâs just sagged to the ground when Lhamu darts forward. A knife, little more than a diamond of metal, appears in her hand and I make to parry it when she slips it into Nautilusâ throat. Blood pools there in a thin gash. His hands raise, trying to keep it in. He garbles something unintelligible and when he falls to the ground, heâs already dead.
Lhamu cleans her knife on his skirt and takes a step back.
âWhat did you do?â
âI killed him.â
âAfter all that?â I demand. âThe rabbit and the hawk and the revenge is nothing and shoving the old man in the lake and you just kill him?â
âI believe the world will be better without him and in that moment, there was no one who could stop me.â
I gape at her. Moral high ground my ass; sheâs just as human as all the rest of us.
âI believe it is the highest goal of society to reduce the overlap in moments when someone wants to kill someone else and when they know they can do it and nothing will stop them. Society failed, in this case. Are you going to kill me?â
âNo, obviously not.â
âWell then. You sit here.â She taps her chair, making it squeak. âAnd consider how you want to spend the rest of your immortal life now that everyone whoâs hurt you is dead. Then you can find me outside.â
True to her word, I find her there two hours later, my cheeks now stiff with dried tears. âI suffer,â I tell her simply.
âYou do.â
âI will suffer so that people donât have to. I wonât kill their enemies for them if I can help it. Iâll just take pain that they canât survive and I can, and Iâll survive it.â
She nods once. âWould you like to talk about Cassian now?â
âNo, I want to free every prisoner in this Keep and then burn it to the ground. After,â I add quickly. âGiving all the grey women working here adequate time to evacuate.â
âOkay. You get the keys, Iâll find something to start a fire.â
