It just hit me that the scene where we see puppet Ji Ling experience the world with Li Jie and they're eating dumplings is a direct callback to Yuan Wuhuo's past, not that either of them can know, of course. Specifically, it's Ji Ling casually giving Li Jie one dumpling back to make sure he's eating well too, just like how Yuan Wuhuo insisted on Xizai to eat one as well even tho he'd just had dinner when they meet during the New Years celebration. Something something, different lives, different people, but now what's happening is the inverse: before, it was YWH who had to stay away because of duty, honor bound to the Shilin Sect, and only see the family once a year. And now it's Ji Ling, except he found the magic to let a fragment of his soul experience that world, and go out there exploring it with his not-brother at his side. But across different lifetimes, one thing didn't change: love is stored in sharing your food with a loved one. I am unwell
