i think the TLC network may have been one of the most evil stations in history, their only shows were like; watch fat and disabled people suffer compounding health issues, vouyeristically observe the habits and lives of the autistic and mentally ill, watch women in poverty be shipped overseas to marry neglectful and abusive american men in order to not die from poverty, and the reactionary evangelical cult family show
This is awesome on so many levels.
Ladies and Gentlemen i present to you John Carpenter’s The Thing, as performed by the claymated, Antarctic cast of the hit children’s animation Pingu. Directed by Lee Hardcastle, in under 3 minutes. Noot, Noot.
Oh my fucking god.
JESUS CHRIST
I’m still amazed at how they got a “noot noot” to sound so much like a “fuck you”
For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.
Myra Cheng et al. "Sycophantic AI decreases prosocial intentions and promotes dependence." Science 391, eaec8352 (2026).
I love getting unaccompanied minors (kids flying alone) who so clearly just. Don't want to be here lol. Sometimes I get to know a little of their story, like their parents are divorced, or a family member died and they're heading to the funeral, but usually they just don't want to talk about it and that's fine. But I always treat the flight like it's a challenge to make them smile. I offer them snacks and soda but that's never enough, that's whatever, they could get those from an airport vending machine. Chump change. So then I tell the worst jokes. Just the most embarrassing, kindergarten teacher, annoying dad jokes you can think of. And those always get a groan, or a "Seriously??" And that's my in! Now I can say "Why, what's your idea of a good joke? No, come on hotshot, make your best joke, let's see it." And they hem and they haw but of course they eventually tell me their very best joke because kids are little competitive comedy goldmines. And it's always super funny, so I laugh, and that's where they slip up. Because you know what you almost always do when your joke successfully makes someone laugh? You smile. And I'm like. Gotcha. Rookie move. Now you're going to end up having a good time in spite of yourself. I win.
Did this with an 11yo u.m. today and he said "What did the ghost say to the other ghost?" And I said "What?" "Nothing. Ghosts aren't real."
I'm literally a flight attendant, offering snacks and drinks is my job
Do you have any specific texts you'd recommend on the 'mediaeval aristocratic household management' thing?
The embarrassing answer is that most of my knowledge of the Medieval era specifically comes from podcasts and (elevated) Posts. For the former 'episodes of Tides of History now behind a paywall and Footnoting History buried somewhere in the archive'. For the later 'random r/askhistorians posts' and (to be actually somewhat helpful here) A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry I think mostly only talks about this incidentally in the series on peasant life and premodern textile manufacturing? Or I feel like it's come up in more detail somewhere but I'm blanking and Devereaux hasn't updated the 'resources for worldbuilders' page since 2022 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Uh @theoutcastrogue I feel like you're my mutual with the highest chance of having something useful to recommend here?
chiming in to recommend Life in a Medieval Castle by Joseph and Frances Gies
just read Growing Up in Medieval London by Barbara Hanawalt, which is in theory about childhood as a construct in England in the period but is extremely about the structure and function of Londoner households in the 1300s-1400s (so she discusses what we can know about the changes wrought by the plague). Not the most lyrical work in the world but totally effective and I learned a lot

look i knowwww this will make me sound like a pretentious asshole, but art and culture literally make you a better and more interesting person. im not exaggerating. you need to pick up some highfalutin classic literature or watch some experimental auteur films every now and then to gain some scope and perspective about the world around you. cultivate curiosity! this can help you in many ways☝
i love how the government can go "we are purposefully going to stop tracking and measuring the harm done by this disease" and everyone just falls in line instantly like "uh oh, we don't have enough information to speculate!" like yeah they knew you would say that. that's why they did it. they know that limiting the amount of information we are able to even have at all is an instant potion of "general public will assume anyone who thinks this is important is crazy conspiracy theorists" lmao
I'm not being fucking vague about "they," have you seen the goddamn CDC lately?
I’m literally always saying this. U have to kill yourself to just look like some guy in a shirt
almost unfollowed u for the last post (i don't care abt 9/11 jokes, i just care if they're funny) but then i recognized ur username. my blade has been stilled by the regard i hold for u

god my heart is fucking breaking for all these people THERE IS STILL TIME DO YOU HEAR ME
IT ISN'T TOO LATE AS LONG AS YOU'RE ALIVE
hi everybody i started HRT at 35 so like don't even despair
being in ur twenties makes u feel like 30 is a brick wall u either fly over or crash into but i promise u it's a door and it opens up into the rest of ur life like getting past the prologue of an open world game
very important addition from @thatsladyfaggottoyou ty <3
I started HRT at approximately 30 and top surgery at 32 just 4.5 months prior to this photo. It's never too late.
Still time to also know it's okay if you know you were never a girl and didn't want to be a boy either. You're still trans. You can viscerally hate both binary options and still be trans and seek out the best you.
ohhh my god I just fact-checked, Nolan actually DID cut the "Nobody" scene from his Odyssey movie. Mfer that is like cutting the Father reveal from Star Wars. Let me speak in a language you understand this is like not dressing Batman up in his suit. "It was not possible to work it in" the TikTok musical with a budget of $4 and a scratched Hamilton CD managed to work it in in SONG form, step up your FUCKING GAME
This genuinely made me want to not watch it
I thought I had nothing to say but I do.
Even the Arthur retelling of The Odyssey includes the “my name is Nobody” gag. And if an Aardvark can get that right, I expect more of a billion dollar box office flop.
the context is the final line Martial 5.34 if anyone’s wondering:
To you, father Fronto and mother Flacilla, this girl
I commend: she was my sweet and my delight.
Little Erotion must not be frightened by the dark shades
and the monstrous mouths of Tartarus’ hound.
She was due to complete the chills of a sixth midwinter, no more,
Had she not lived that many days too few.
Now let her frisk and play among old friends
Now let her chatter, and so lisp my name.
And let the soft turf cover her brittle bones:
Earth, lie lightly on her: she lay lightly on you.
