I do really think that the use of ChatGPT and genAI by students highlights the fundamental flaw of our education system focusing almost entirely on grades and test scores rather than generating curiosity and inquiry, which produces individuals who fundamentally do not understand that the purpose of an assignment is meant to be to learn *how* to do something, not simply to produce a product you can turn in to get an A+
Polycule but it’s just two people in a romantic relationship with each other and their third who’s pretty obviously aroace but also somehow so deeply intertwined in their lives that it’d just be wrong to not count them as involved. Is this anything.
Another reason Aaron despises Neil is that he probably thought that they were becoming "friendly"
Due to his and Andrew's deal, Aaron could only have family, no friends. That was Andrew and Nicky, then expanded to include Kevin, and then the next year included Neil (even added to the family phone plan).
Neil hangs out with the monsters; sits with them, goes shopping with them, goes to Eden's with them, etc. Aaron got a list of single Vixen's for Neil to try to help this odd kid out socially. They looked out for Andrew together; Neil kicked down the door and Aaron killed Drake. Neil didn't tell Andrew about Katelyn like Aaron asked. They bonded a little over not telling Dobson anything.
Aaron, who had a lifetime of bad friends who used him to then no friends only family, thought he and Neil were becoming buddies or something.
And then Neil used him. He meddled with Aaron's relationship with Katelyn for his own gain. Yes, Neil's meddling got Andrew and Aaron in therapy together and started talking to each other, but Neil still used him.
Madly into Andrew’s sense of humour, when he called Neil a Pinocchio — not just because he was a liar, but also because of Neil’s desperate desire to be a real boy.
More specifically, let’s talk Andrew Minayrd in terms of his disorder.
Disclaimer: I’m not a mental health professional. I’m just a girl that’s been coping with mental disorders for half her life and has a tendency to research even the smallest things about them. (and has also been professionally diagnosed with Bipolar II, if that ups my credibility any.)
So let’s begin with what Nora herself has said.
“Last I checked*, Andrew is manic depressive, with more deep lows than highs.“ (x)
If anyone doesn’t know, “manic depressive” is another way of saying Bipolar. If you want to be even more specific, Manic Depression was the previous term for Bipolar Disorder, but it was changed when Bipolar was split into types, mainly because Bipolar I doesn’t need depressive episodes to be diagnosed. Nowadays, most of the time if you hear Manic Depression, it’s commonly referring to Bipolar II, which has alternating periods of major depression and mildly elevated moods (otherwise known as hypomania). So, through Nora’s wording of what Andrew’s disorder is, we can assume he has Bipolar II.
But I know the fandom likes to disregard canon in certain instances, so let me just continue trying to make my case.
For 100-follower-day prompts: Neil trying to explain the differences between beefy twinyards to the other foxes (or, alternatively, trying to explain how he tells the difference WITHOUT mentioning the beefiness 👀)? Love your stuff btw, thanks for all you do!
Now this is quality content, thank you so much, lovely!! Here's a short:
They were trying to trick him again.
Neil and Kevin had gone to the court for some early practice before actual practice, and now Neil was paying the price for not traveling with Andrew. He and Aaron had dressed in baggy black sweatshirts, thick sweatpants, and only wore socks on their feet. Andrew had removed his earrings and Aaron had styled his hair like Andrew's. The rest of the Foxes were sitting in the lounge, smirking amongst themselves and snickering once in a while, no doubt at whatever face Neil currently had on his face.
"You guys..." he huffed. There had to be a bet of some kind, and a good one, too. The only reason Andrew and Aaron went along with bets were if the prize was worth it.
"Go on, Neil," Allison said cheerfully. She was the organizer, no doubt.
"This isn't funny," Neil said lowly. "And it's getting old."
"You only say that because you lost last time," Matt replied with a loud laugh.
Neil didn't loose last time, because there was no bet last time. Last time, Andrew was being a dick, and Neil had been feeling sick and miserable. Aaron shouldn't have walked into their dorm that day if he didn't want to get mistaken for his brother.
"Just guess, Neil," Allison said.
He considered leaving just to spite everyone, but at the same time, he did want to make up for last time. While the twins were identical, there would always be differences. They both had broad shoulders, but Andrew had bigger biceps because of the position he played, having to hold his heavy racket and working out specifically to build that strength. Aaron had more muscle in his legs, giving him larger calves, but not larger thighs. Unfortunately, with them dressed like this, it was nearly impossible to see those differences.
"Want to walk us through your thought process?" Dan asked with a teasing note to her voice.
Neil really didn't, but that did give him an idea. "Faces," Neil decided to go with. "Aaron scowls too deeply."
There was no reaction. Shit, he was getting better.
"So you know?" Allison asked. Kevin apparently decided he was done with the team's bullshit and left for the locker room.
"Sure," Neil said uneasily. The unfortunate part here was that Aaron had clearly been practicing - or maybe Andrew gave him lessons on how to school his expression perfectly - because he couldn't pick out the little differences from this distance. "I just need another look."
"What're you looking for?" Matt questioned.
There was no way he was going to explain that he could tell them apart if he could get a good look at their biceps. "Trying to see which one styled their hair and which one didn't," Neil quickly lied after he got a few steps closer.
Still nothing. Both twins had their arms hanging at their sides, which didn't give Neil a good look at how the fabric shaped against their arms. The black of the sweatshirts didn't help, either. Neil didn't know yet.
That was fine. It was fine.
The team was clearly getting impatient. "Figure it out, buddy?" Matt asked. He looked worried, like if Neil got it wrong he'd die or something.
"Just need to check one last thing," Neil replied, walking around the twins until he was looking at their backs.
"What's the last thing?" Dan asked.
Neil's gaze traveled down the twins' clothed backs until he could take a look at each ass. There was some things they'd never be able to hide, it would seem. Neil had spent hours in the weight room watching Andrew do backsquats. It had helped build his thighs, but it also shaped his ass.
Aaron doesn't do backsquats. Neil was not going to tell anyone this.
"Aaron's shorter," Neil said, cupping his chin like he was observing something interesting.
Somehow, neither one of them reacted. Neil had no doubt it was taking everything in Aaron's short body to keep his composure. Behind him, the upperclassmen had begun to laugh loudly, but all that mattered to Neil was that they didn't realize what he'd really been looking at.
"Aaron," Neil said, pointing to the twin on the left. "Andrew," he added, pointing to the twin on the right.
"That's bullshit!" Aaron immediately yelled, turning around and glaring at Neil. "We're the same height!"
"Hmm, you might want to get that checked," Neil said, allowing a smirk to quirk his lips.
There were a few groans from the couch. Matt was telling someone to pay up, and Aaron walked towards them to hand over whatever money he owned. Andrew didn't move, but he motioned for Neil to step closer. Neil went, finally able to pick out the larger build on Andrew's body now that he was so close.
"As great as that was," Andrew began, "you do know that me and Aaron are the same height."
It was a statement, not a question. "Yes," Neil responded.
"Tell me how," Andrew demanded.
Neil was still smirking. He wasn't going to say anything - not yet, anyway. He was going to gloat in his victory for a while, first. "There's just some things you can't hide," he whispered instead.
Sorry but I'm never going to get over Kevin chewing out the Ravens, revealing that Wymack is his dad, and dropping the "I've never been skiing" bomb on live television in the same interview, and then going "we're all going to die" while hunched over a sink the second he walked off stage. Absolutely hilarious.
Actually hilarious to me that Riko & co. thought that Kevin went out and recruited Neil Josten aka Nathaniel Wesninski aka The Butcher's son ON PURPOSE
They really thought my guy went "you took my hand? Well I'm taking your runaway backliner who's been missing for the past eight years." And that he went and did it BY HIMSELF in FOUR MONTHS
I know Kevin is and has always been That Bitch™, but he could never dream to serve the amount of cunt Riko thought him capable of when he first got the lab results back from Kathy's show. No wonder they were so mad lol
my favorite scene in all of literature is when Neil Josten wakes up in Columbia after being drugged, hurls an alarm clock at Aaron, dumps his water on the floor and throws the cup at Aaron, stuff his clothes down the toilet and squeezes out through the window, has the foresight to call Matt from a pay phone to protect his shit, hitch hikes back to campus, eyes back to brown?? shows up on Wymack’s door like 😜 and reveals he could speak German the whole time?? CHARACTER OF ALL TIME, that is a protagonist who knows how MOVE THE MFING PLOT ALONG
i reworked my original timeline because something was bugging me about it and now it SHOULD be correct
NOTE: some of these dates are approximated from generalizations made in the book– for example, nicky says andrew's letter to aaron arrives two weeks after cass calls tilda. i assume this is an general use of 'two weeks', but i've taken it literally as 14 days, which is why the letter is dated to arrive november 29th. approximated/assumed dates are marked with a *
november 4th, 1986: aaron michael and andrew joseph minyard are born to tilda minyard in san jose, california
november 7th¹*, 1986: tilda gives the twins away to foster care
november 14th*, 1986: tilda returns to the hospital and takes aaron home with her, leaving andrew behind.
november 4th, 1999: aaron and andrew turn 13 years old. aaron lives in san jose with his mother, and andrew lives in oakland with his foster parents cass and richard spear. they are unaware of each other
november 14th², 1999: oakland raiders vs san diego chargers football game at ring central stadium in oakland. aaron and tilda go with one of tilda's boyfriends, and whilst there, aaron is mistaken for andrew by officer phil higgins, who takes tilda's contact information to pass onto andrew's foster mother, hoping to reunite the brothers
november 15th, 1999: cass spear calls tilda to arrange a meet up for aaron and andrew, but tilda refuses, telling cass she wants nothing to do with andrew and to not call her again. aaron hears all of this by listening in on the upstairs phone line, and he and tilda argue.
november 29th* 1999: aaron recieves a letter from andrew that basically says "fuck you, go away."
december 1999: cass writes aaron a letter asking him to try contacting andrew again in the spring, and that holidays are a difficult time at their house
march 2000: andrew goes to juvie for an unspecified offense
may 2000: tilda and aaron move to columbia, south carolina, and aaron meets his cousin nicky hemmick for presumably the first time.
*unspecified time in early-ish 2001³: luther hemmick finds out about andrew and begins a 'years-long' campaign to reunite him with tilda and aaron. i am choosing to place this around april 2001
six months later, approx. october 2001: luther flies to california to meet andrew and his foster family
one month later, november 2001: aaron flies out to 'meet' andrew for the first time at juvie. they have probably just turned 15
march⁴ 2003: andrew makes early parole and is released from juvie. luther makes tilda take him home, and then aaron, andrew, and tilda, finally all live together in columbia
→ sidebar: on the second night living there, andrew makes his deal with aaron
august 2003: aaron and andrew start their junior years at macon high school, andrew's first outside of juvie
early september 2003⁵: tilda mistakes andrew for aaron and hits him. andrew goes to the hemmicks' who call tilda and she takes him home. aaron is actually at a study group standing in for his brother, and on the drive back, andrew orchestrates the car crash that kills his mother
→ nicky hemmick moves back from germany on the day of tilda's funeral, presumably about a week after the crash. he gets a job at sweetie's diner to provide for the twins, eventually becoming their legal guardian⁶
→ not long after, andrew locks aaron in the bathroom to get him clean from the drugs tilda got him addicted to
october* 2003: nicky and the twins start working at eden's twilight
november 4th, 2003: the twins turn 17, their first birthday together
december 2003: nicky is attacked by four homophobes outside eden's. andrew saves him, almost killing the men in the process, and he is arrested
may⁷ 2004: andrew, 17, finishing his junior year of high school, is put on trial for what he did and sentenced. his parole agreement includes court-mandated therapy and mood altering drugs that he is scheduled to be on for 3 years
august 2004: andrew and aaron begin their senior year at macon high school
february⁸ 2005: kevin day and riko moriyama offer andrew a contract to play with the edgar allan ravens, which he refuses. kevin and riko travel to south carolina to find out why, where andrew refuses again and he and aaron play a scrimmage with kevin on the court
march 2005: david wymack meets with the twins and nicky at subway, and gives the three of them contracts to sign with the palmetto state foxes, which they do
june 2005: aaron, andrew, and nicky finally join the lineup for the PSU foxes

notes/citations under the cut
1) guesstimate based on when i think it's legal to give children to foster care. i assume its not that long after birth, and i believe the twins had to spend time in the ICU beforehand as well. the 14th is an approximation based on the fact that nicky says tilda went back for aaron after a week
2) raiders v chargers was an actual football game that took place in oakland 10 days after aaron's 13th birthday and therefore works out perfectly for the timeline thank youu nora
3) nicky says this in the start of the raven king, october 2006:
4) he went to juvie in march 2000 so i'm assuming his 3 year sentence just works out linearly like that
5) approximated from being about 5 months after andrew moves to columbia
6) while he DOES do this it's probably a very long process so i assume its ongoing as other events in the timeline happen
7) this is just me counting backwards because andrew is SUPPOSED to come off his drugs in may 2007 (obviously he doesn't) and so once again i assume the 3 year time period is linear or nothing else works
8) i'm saying february for this for two reasons: 1) i'm completely guessing when college teams recruit athletes 2) in the EC aaron describes the drive home as being darker earlier in the evening, so late winter feels about right
