Summary: Sam has a little teeth issue. Luckily, Dr. Barnes is liable to help.
Sam loved the library. He loved it because he could spend hours looking for a good book to read. Then sit in the common area and just read it. It was his favorite thing in the world. He started noticing someone else who seemed to be doing the same thing as him. Although the world was in the middle of a pandemic, people still made it to the library. Everyone kept their distance, but it was still alive and well. Sam noticed this one guy who nearly mirrored his reading schedule. It seemed like every time Sam sat down to read his book, this man would be right there. But he wasn’t threatened by him. Nor annoyed. More so, curious. Sam hesitated to make eye contact, but whenever they did, the man would always smile at him. You could tell behind the mask. His eyes would light up. Sam had feelings about that, he just wasn’t sure what they were. One day, this man would come up to Sam and make conversation with him. It felt inappropriate, given the pandemic, but Sam didn’t object. Sam noticed they were reading the same book when he came over. They had to talk about it, I mean, how often do you meet someone in public reading the exact same book as you? So, they chatted away. Sam had gotten used to having a mask on his face, so he was more likely to smile and chat like this. He preferred it, actually. After an incident in childhood, Sam’s front teeth were partially missing. His front teeth were chipped. After years of bullying from not only his peers but his family, he stopped smiling altogether. Now, as an adult, it’s just a habit not to smile, or to cover his mouth when he does smile. But with the recent pandemic, wearing a mask has allowed Sam to hide, giving him the ability to interact again. And he did. He quickly got to know this mysterious library man. Given their identical reading schedules, they opted to start their own book club. Just the two of them. Over time, they grew pretty close. He learned more and more about this man. The first thing he learned was his name, James Buchanan Barnes, but he goes by Bucky. Sam thought it was cute. Sam and Bucky would begin to exchange personal life stories and experiences. They would half talk about the book they were reading, and half talk about themselves. Sam was a mental health counselor. Bucky was a dentist. In more ways than one, they needed each other.
Sam and Bucky got acquainted very quickly. Bucky was friendly by nature, and Sam was naturally funny. The two hit it off quickly. They found themselves in the library quite often. Their book club consisted of just them, but they made it work. Every week Thursday at 7pm they met in the library to talk about what they’ve read. Chapters at a time. The first book they chose was a murder mystery. It seemed as though they had the same sense of liking. Every Thursday would come around, and Sam and Bucky would meet and chat. Sometimes, the conversation would derail. Bucky would ask a personal question about Sam, and vice versa. They never pushed each other too far, so it was mutually respectful . Bucky started pushing hints towards Sam that he wanted to see him outside the library. Sam caught on, but he was nervous. He liked that they met in the library, because it allowed him to be himself more. With the face mask covering his biggest insecurity, he was worried that seeing anyone outside of here wouldn’t work. Sam was also worried because Bucky was a dentist, and he’d definitely take notice of his teeth immediately. He didn’t want to endure that embarrassment right now. He liked the surface level contact. For now. Bucky caught on, and he wasn’t offended, so he didn’t press.
One day, Sam was talking to his sister Sarah. He started telling her about this mysterious library man. All the sequence of events that led up to them talking in the first place. Sarah was impressed, but she could tell what was going on. Sarah knew her brother like her back hand. She decided it was time for some tough love.
“Sam, he obviously wants to go out with you. Why won’t you?”
Sam’s face fell. “You know why, Sarah. I don’t have it in me.”
Sarah sighed. “So what, you’re gonna ignore this man until you die?”
Sam shook his head. “I don’t want to. I really like him.”
“I can tell you do. Just go out with him! If he makes a comment about your teeth, just go with the flow. He’s a dentist, he’s going to be curious.”
Sam sighed. “You’re right you’re right. You’d like him.”
“I hope so. Bring him around sometime.” Sarah laughed.
Sam laughed along with his supportive sister. He was nervous, but Sarah was right. He really liked this man, and if he wanted anything between them to continue, Sam had to let go of his fear. Fast forward to their next date at the library, Sam and Bucky were neck deep in their book lore. It hit Sam like a brick in the middle of the conversation. He felt his stomach solidify. He was going to ask Bucky out outside of the library. He had to. Bucky took notice of Sam immediately and asked if he was okay. Sam told him yes, but that there was something he needed to ask. Bucky’s eyes grew curious.
“What is it Wilson?” Bucky smiled through his mask.
Sam gulped. “You wanna go get dinner sometime?”
Bucky’s eyes widened. “Wait, really?”
Sam nodded. “Really.”
“Okay,” Bucky started, adjusting himself in the seat. His legs were long, he needed to stretch them out every so often. “You’re on. Are you free tonight?”
Sam nodded.
“Alright Sam, tonight it is. Cooper’s. Meet me there at 7.” Bucky stood up from the table and put his arm on the table, lightly hitting it. “I’ll see you later.” He smiled and walked off. Sam’s heart was racing a million miles a minute. He can’t believe he just did that. But he did. Now, he had to go home and get ready for his date. How exciting!
6:30pm came around fast, as Sam hurriedly got ready to leave. Cooper’s was only 10 minutes from him, but he wanted to be a gentleman and get there early. Preferably before Bucky. Sam threw on a nice outfit for the night. He had on his blackest jeans, a comfy but cute shirt. He wore his nice dress shoes. Not the wedding ones, but close enough. He also wore his infamous golden chain necklace that Sarah always says brings out the best in him. He also put in a stud earring. But just the one ear. Gotta look fly. Sam made his way to the restaurant at 6:35. He was nervous, but also excited. Usually when people meet in restaurants these days, people still wear their masks until it’s time to eat. Sam was okay with this, he thought maybe he could get away with Bucky not even noticing. If he kept his mouth closed long enough. It would be a test for sure. Sam arrived at the restaurant at 6:46. He mentally prepared himself before going in. Talking himself up, saying things to make himself feel better. It was gonna be okay. Upon walking into the restaurant, Sam’s eye was caught immediately. Right there, right in the middle of the restaurant, was Bucky. He beat him. Sam smiled under the mask, and headed towards the table. Bucky stood up to greet Sam, pulling him in for a hug. Sam couldn’t help but notice Bucky’s cologne. He wasn’t sure he’d ever smelled it before. It smelled really good, which made Sam smile. Sam noticed immediately how nice Bucky looked. Normally he wears jeans and some kind of sweater or shirt, but tonight, he was in black on black. Not a suit, but close enough. Sam was impressed. Bucky also slicked his hair back, which looked very good on him. Sam was in awe.
The two sat down and awkwardly picked up their menus. Normally they have a book in between them to discuss, but tonight, it was just their raw selves. Sam was extremely nervous, and he guessed/hoped Bucky was too. After about 5 minutes of silence, Bucky said something.
“So, what looks good to you here?” Bucky kept the menu up in his hand. His eyes diverted to Sam’s, who were glued to the menu. Sam sat and thought a minute.
“I’m kind of looking at the salmon. What about you?” Sam finally put the menu down and made eye contact with Bucky. It felt way different.
“Salmon sounds amazing. I think I’m gonna do the steak.” Bucky smiled as he set his menu down.
“Steak is great.” Sam lightly smiled. Soon, the waiter came over and took their orders. Bucky ordered the steak, and Sam ordered the salmon. After the waiter took their orders and left the table, Bucky jumped right into the pool. He started asking all kinds of questions, like do you have siblings, relationship with your parents, any pets? Bucky was bold, and Sam appreciated it. The men went back and forth talking about their families. Sam told Bucky he had a sister, and that his parents were both passed. Bucky told Sam he had 3 sisters, and both his parents were alive. Neither of them had pets, though. They continued chatting about all kinds of stuff. After roughly a half hour, the food came. Sam’s stomach dropped all the way to the floor. This was the moment. He was going to have to take his mask off in front of Bucky for the first time. He was incredibly nervous. The waiter placed down their meals, asking if they needed anything else. Bucky told him no, as the waiter walked off. Bucky went first. He slowly peeled off his mask, to reveal his slightly bearded face. Sam sat and watched him take his mask off. Bucky noticed Sam was watching and looked at him and smiled. A beautiful, healthy, white set of teeth was revealed. Sam’s heart fluttered. He already knew Bucky was attractive, but seeing his face in full was another experience for him. Sam didn’t say anything as he continued staring.
“Sam? You good?” Bucky asked. Sam heard his name and snapped out of his daze.
“Yeah yeah I’m good, sorry.” Sam looked down at the table.
“No problem. Are you gonna eat with your mask on?” Bucky joked. Sam realized he still had his mask on. He nervously chuckled as he started to take it off. He was careful not to show his teeth though.
“Looks good.” Sam said, not realizing Bucky was staring at his mouth. Bucky nodded, as the two dug into their meals. In between bites, they continued talking about whatever, and whenever Sam would laugh, he’d cover his mouth. Bucky definitely noticed this. Sam was doing his best not to feel self conscious, but it was hard. He didn’t feel like Bucky was judging him, but he was definitely having thoughts about it. I mean he’s a dentist, of course he is. Bucky didn’t say a word about it the whole night. And, he stopped staring at Sam’s mouth. This was a huge relief to Sam. The rest of the night went swimmingly. They continued to talk about their lives, comfortably. Bucky ended up snatching the bill before Sam could get it. Sam really liked him. They ended their night with a hug and went their separate ways. Sam had lots of thinking to do tonight.
The whole night was such a vibe. You know how things just feel good? Yeah, it was like that. Sam thoroughly enjoyed listening to Bucky talk about his life. And he learned a lot about him. The biggest stand out was how Bucky didn’t mention Sam’s teeth, knowing damn well he took notice of them. Maybe he’s being polite and doesn’t want to mention it? They aren’t that close yet, so maybe he feels awkward saying something. Either way, Bucky finally saw Sam tonight in his true colors. How Bucky reacted to Sam following this date will say a lot.
Sam paced himself the following week. He didn’t hit up the library every single day like he normally does. He went on Tuesday, but Bucky wasn’t there. Which is normal, Bucky usually gets held up late in the office. Except Thursday. He’s always there on Thursdays for their book club meeting. Thursday rolled around, as Sam slowly approached the library. Bucky is usually there before him, but he wasn’t sure what was going to happen this time. To Sam’s pleasant surprise, Bucky was there in his usual casual clothes, book in hand. Sam walked towards Bucky, when Bucky took notice. He stood up and went to hug Sam. This was nice. Unusual, but nice. Everything seemed normal so far. And Sam was watching. They went into their usual book club questionnaire. The conversation was how it always was, pleasant, but funny. They had a way of making each other laugh very hard. And they did. Their book conversation went on and on. Sam felt good. It didn’t seem like Bucky was feeling a type of way. They got to the end of their questionnaire, when Bucky whipped out the craziest question of all. “Do you want to come to my place for dinner tonight?” Sam was completely taken aback. But intrigued nonetheless. Sam thought for a minute, wondering if he was ready. He wasn’t really, but he was going to brave it anyways. “Sure man.” Sam told Bucky. Bucky’s eyes lit up at his words. The two finished up their book chat, then headed separate ways. Sam was going to need a lot of preparation for tonight, so he asked Sarah to come over and help him get ready. She came right when Sam asked her to. Sam was already in his room, pants on, no shirt, when Sarah walked in.
He looked at her with sad eyes. “Help me find a nice shirt.” He whined. Sarah smiled and started going through his closet. “No, no, no.” She started throwing stuff on the floor. Then, she found it. The holy grail. It was a light black shirt with sequins on them.
“Isn’t that a little too fancy?” Sam questioned.
“Sam, this man invited you to dinner, to his house, right?” Sarah asked. Sam nodded. “Well, then you gotta show up as your best self. This is perfect.” Sarah handed Sam the shirt to put on. He looked at it like it offended him. But he trusted Sarah. This was the exact reason he asked her to come over. Sam never would’ve picked this shirt. But he was grateful. He continued getting ready for the night. He started to talk to Sarah about his anxiety. He was going to be in this man’s home, without a mask on. If he hadn’t already, he was going to notice his teeth. He was truly so scared for that. Sarah talked him down, helping him get into a better state of mind. She was good at that. And it did help a little. He was still wildly nervous.
Sam arrived at Bucky’s around 7:45. Bucky told him 8, but Sam likes to be early anywhere he goes. That’s just how he was raised. Sam walked up to the door, mask on his face. He knew he’d have to take it off eventually, but he just wanted to be polite. He lightly knocked on the door. A few seconds went by, when a happy Bucky opened the door.
“Sam!” Bucky went to go hug Sam. Sam was taken aback, but he hugged him nonetheless. “Come on in!” Bucky was very excited. Sam smiled and walked into his home. It was, nice. Cozy. Bucky led Sam into his living area, where the two took a seat on Bucky’s long, black couch. It was leather. Very nice.
“Thanks for coming, you look great. How are you?” Bucky asked Sam. Sam was still looking around and taking in his environment. He also still had his mask on.
“Thank you Bucky, you look nice too.” Sam was eyeing Bucky now, seeing his outfit. He had on black jeans and a really nice top. Like, really nice. Sam suddenly didn’t feel so dumb for having his fancy top on. Bucky smiled at Sam’s words. “Shit,” Sam said, ripping off his mask. “I forgot I had this on.”
“No worries. I wasn’t going to say anything. If you’re more comfortable with it on, by all means.” Sam close mouth and smiled at Bucky. That was really nice of him to say. The two continued talking about whatever was brought up. Bucky told Sam that he was cooking them a 3 course meal for dinner. He didn’t tell him what exactly, just that it’s happening. Sam did his absolute best to hide his teeth from Bucky. Every now and then Bucky would make him laugh really hard, but Sam would put his hands over his mouth. Bucky definitely noticed, but didn’t say a word. They talked for another good 20 minutes, until Bucky announced he was ready to serve dinner. Sam was hungry, so this was good. Bucky started them off with a little appetizer, a small house salad. Sam wasn’t big on salads, but this one looked really good. To his pleasure, it was delicious. It was like the kind you get at Olive Garden. It had a bunch of veggies and a really tasty dressing.
“How is it?” Bucky asked.
Sam was in the middle of chewing. He put his hand over his mouth, “really good, thank you.” Bucky smiled at him, pleased. The two continued conversation again, nothing crazy. Bucky started asking new questions like, what’s your favorite color, what’re your hobbies, stuff like that. They were getting fairly acquainted. Bucky still hadn’t said a word about Sam’s teeth. Bucky was ready to serve the main course, as he got up to go get it. Sam fixed himself in the chair, awaiting Bucky’s return. The main course had come, salmon. Salmon with lemon, asparagus, and mashed potatoes. It looked heavenly.
“Did you make this just for me?” Sam teased, smiling with his mouth closed.
“Is that okay?” Bucky asked.
Sam smiled again. “More than okay.”
The two dove right into their meal. The food was excellent. Sam was extremely impressed. Everything has been good so far.
“So Sam, what’s it like being a mental health counselor?” Bucky whipped that question out of thin air. Sam was surprised, but not really. They’d talk about their work eventually.
“It’s nice. I get to help people that can’t help themselves. It’s extremely difficult, but very rewarding.”
Bucky smiled at him. “I love that. Do you have a specific audience or is it just anyone?”
“Oh it’s everyone. My youngest client was 6, and my oldest was 84. You’re never too young or too old to get help.”
“I like that.” Bucky pointed his fork at Sam.
“Yeah man it’s good. How about you? What’s it like being a dentist?”
Bucky finished chewing before he started talking. “I love it. In a way, it’s also helping people who can’t help themselves you know? I just really like the craft and intricacy about it.”
“Are you a specialist dentist or a general?” Sam asked.
“Mostly general, but I can do certain procedures.”
Sam was curious. “Like what?”
“Well, standard fillings and such, but I can also do bridges, crowns, root canals, implants.”
Sam looked dumbfounded. He didn’t know what any of that was. “That sounds nice.” He wasn’t sure what else to say.
“Yeah, I like it. I’m happy there.” Bucky added moving his eyes down to his almost empty plate.
“That’s what matters. Being happy.” Sam smiled at him. Bucky looked up and smiled back. Bucky’s eyes hadn’t gone to Sam’s mouth the whole night. The two kept talking about their jobs back and forth. They both finished their meals at the same time. So, they just continued to talk until they were ready for dessert. Saw was enjoying his time with Bucky. He was respectful while also being funny. He also still hasn’t said a word about his teeth. He wasn't sure what was gonna happen. Bucky decided it was time for dessert, so he got up and got the dessert. Sam was excited, dessert was his favorite. Bucky placed a homemade chocolate cake in front of Sam. Sam’s eyes nearly watered, it looked so good.
“Did you make this?” Sam asked. Bucky nodded. “It looks amazing, thank you.”
“Dig in!” And they did. And, of course, it was delicious. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It was fluffy, soft, and not too rich all at the same time. Sam loved it. The two continued chatting through dessert. They both shared how they got into their work. Both had fascinating answers. After a while, Bucky asked Sam if he wanted to take a seat on the couch, as it would be comfier. Sam agreed as the two went to sit on the black leather couch. It was very comfortable. Their conversation continued as normal. Then, Bucky started bringing up his work again. Sam didn’t mind, he liked to hear about it. Considering Bucky seemed passionate about it. Sam wouldn’t be ready for the question Bucky was about to ask.
“Sam, can I ask you a personal question?” Bucky wondered.
“Sure, what’s up?” Sam replied.
“I don’t want to be insensitive, so if you’re not comfortable telling me, I totally understand.” Sam looked at him confused. Bucky was holding back his words. “What happened to your tooth?”
Sam’s heart fell all the way to his ass. This was it. It was time. Sam couldn’t run from it anymore. Bucky finally asked the question. And he did it very politely, but Sam still hated it. Sam turned bright red and Bucky noticed it immediately. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked. It’s not the right time.” Sam interrupted him quickly. “No, it’s okay. I want to tell you. I’m just nervous.”
“That’s okay, I understand. But seriously if tonight isn’t a good night for this, we can-“
“It’s fine.” Sam interrupted again. Bucky went silent. Quietly watching Sam. Sam wouldn’t meet his gaze, he kept his eyes on his hands that were intermingled.
“It was a childhood accident.” Sam started. Bucky stayed silent, watching. “I never got it fixed because I never had the money for it. I have the money now, but it’s just hard for some reason.”
Bucky nodded. He moved closer to Sam. For the first time, Bucky grabbed Sam’s hand to hold. Sam didn’t move, he just let whatever was gonna happen, happen. Bucky smiled at him, as Sam finally met his gaze. “What if I fix it?”
Sam’s eyes got big. He stayed holding onto Bucky’s hand. “You'd wanna do that?”
“I mean, yeah. I’m a dentist Sam.”
“I know that, but like, we haven’t known each other long.”
“I like you, Sam.” Bucky smiled at him.
Sam smiled back. “I like you too.”
“Then it’s settled!”
“What’s settled?” Sam looked confused.
Bucky smiled and put his hand on Sam’s shoulder. “I’ll set up an appointment for you to come in.”
Sam turned red again. He was embarrassed and nervous. “Are are you sure Bucky? You don’t have to do this.”
“I want to help you.” Sam’s eyes went googly at Bucky.
“Okay.” It was all Sam was able to get out.
“Before the first appointment though, I have a question.” Bucky asked. Sam nodded at him. “Would I be able to see your teeth?”
“R-right now?”
“If that’s okay! If not, we can wait.”
Sam pondered for a minute. He was already incredibly embarrassed about everything. And Bucky was being really sweet. Eh, what’s the harm, he thought.
“Okay,” Sam started as he moved closer to Bucky. “What do you want me to do?”
“Just smile Sam.” Sam nodded. He nervously scratched his head. He gathered himself together before showing Bucky his teeth. He was extremely nervous. But he could do it. He could. Sam signaled to Bucky that he was going to show him his teeth. God was he nervous. Sam hadn’t shown anyone his full smile in so long. But he knew he was in good company. After a few seconds, Sam bared his smile to Bucky. Bucky got closer to Sam so that he could see. Bucky gently put his left arm on Sam’s chin, tilting his head a little to get a better view. Bucky was seeing Sam’s teeth in full for the first time. Bucky took a minute to study his teeth.
“You know Sam,” Bucky moved back on the couch, giving Sam some space. “It’s not as bad as it looks.”
“Really?” Sam asked.
Bucky nodded. “Really. It shouldn’t take more than a half hour.”
“That’s good to know. Thank you, Bucky.”
“Don’t thank me yet.” Bucky smiled. Sam was itching to leave and Bucky could tell. Sam politely informed Bucky he had to go. He thanked him for everything. For having him over, for the 3 course meal, for offering to fix his teeth? The two hugged each other for longer than they usually do. Something was different between them. Sam felt a lot of intimacy with Bucky tonight. He liked it. But he needed to go home and process it.
Sam went home that night feeling heavy, yet lighter. He called Sarah once he got in his car. Told her everything. She was screaming on the other end for him. She was so happy for him! And she was so happy about offering to fix his teeth. “Finally, Sam! You’ve always wanted this!” She’d tell him. He’d agree, knowing it is what he’s always wanted. But he was nervous. Very nervous. Rightfully so. Sam got home and immediately changed his clothes. He wanted to be in his comfy cozy clothing. He laid in bed all night thinking about his night with Bucky. How well they flow together. The communication never feels forced. They always have a good topic of conversation. And the moments of intimacy? Sure are intimate. Sam was okay with this. He really liked Bucky a lot. And he was willing to give him a chance. Bucky texted Sam the day after telling him he can come into his office on Monday at 8am. That was 3 days away, but Sam was more nervous than ever. Until then, he would manage.
Monday at 8am came, and quickly too. Quicker than Sam wanted. Sam walked into the office at 7:45. He always had to be early. As he walked in, he was greeted by the receptionist. She seemed nice, very loud voice.
“You must be Sam.” Sam smiled at her and walked to the front desk.
“Hi yes, I’m Sam I have an 8 o’clock appointment.”
“I got you right here Sam. Can you please fill out this paperwork?” She handed him a clipboard with some paper and a pen. Sam took the clipboard and went to go sit down. It appeared to be a standard health screening, like any allergies or medications being taken. Stuff like that. Sam completed the paperwork and handed it back to the nice lady.
“Thank you Sam. We’ll call you back in a few.” She smiled. Sam nodded and went to sit down again. He whipped out his phone to pass the time. Not even a minute later, another friendly woman called out for Sam. He put his phone away, stood up, and followed the woman. She led them down a small hallway and into a large, sterile looking room. Sam hated it, but he continued nonetheless.
”Dr. Barnes will be in shortly.” The woman told Sam as she walked out of the office. Sam looked around. Standard dental office. The chair right in the middle. A tray right next to it, no tools yet. The side walls had counters with a sink. And tons of cabinets. It appeared clean though, which was important. Sam continued standing awkwardly looking around the room, when he heard his name being called.
“Sam!” It was Bucky. Sam turned around to see Bucky in full medical gear. He had on blue scrubs, and a long white jacket. Sam turned bright red when he saw Bucky like this. It was definitely doing something for him.
“Hi, Dr. Barnes.” Sam managed to get out.
“Oh no, you can’t call me that.”
Sam’s eyebrow furrowed. “Why not?”
“Because it makes me sound like a distant cousin. I’d like to be more than that.” Sam smiled. “Why don’t you have a seat?”
Sam nodded and took a seat in the white dental chair. Sam adjusted himself and got comfy.
“How are you today?” Bucky asked.
“Nervous.” Sam admitted.
“Understandably. I promise I’m gentle and will not hurt you.” Bucky smiled as he grabbed a pair of gloves from the cabinet. “Do you have dental anxiety or you’re just nervous about this?”
“Just nervous about this.” Sam awkwardly adjusted himself.
“That’s okay, I understand. I’m going to make this as painless as possible. Are you a regular at the dentist?”
Sam nodded. “I try to go as much as I can.”
“Wonderful.” Bucky said, putting his gloves on. “Mind if I have a look?” Sam nodded at him. Bucky took Sam’s yes as an indication to start. Bucky already had the gloves on, he now needed a mask. After he put his mask on, he put the little blue bib around Sam’s neck. Then, he reclined the chair backwards. Sam felt nervous. Bucky adjusted the overhead light to be aimed directly at Sam’s mouth.
“You okay?” Bucky asked, smiling. Sam nodded. “Great. I got a mirror right here, I’m just going to have a look, okay?” Sam nodded again. “Open for me please.” Sam did as he was asked. Bucky carefully moved the mirror around Sam’s mouth. Sam didn’t know where to look so he looked up at the ceiling. But he could tell Bucky’s eyes were laser focused on his mouth. Which he was okay with. Bucky took a few more seconds to look around. He finally pulled out the mirror and leaned back a little. He put the mirror away, as he used his gloved finger to move Sam’s lips up. He was doing this to see Sam’s front teeth. This got a reaction out of Sam. Bucky noticed immediately.
“Are you okay?” Bucky asked.
“I’m okay, sorry.” Sam was extremely embarrassed, but he pressed on.
“Like I said before, this is an easy fix. Do you want some gas to help you relax before we get started?”
Sam thought for a minute. Maybe the gas would help his anxiety. Because he sure was on edge. He told Bucky he’d like the gas. Bucky nodded and left the room to go get it. Sam stared straight forward. Bucky had just examined his teeth. Which, for Sam, is very intimate. He was feeling all types of ways. Bucky came back in the room with a gas mask and tank attached to it. Sam made a face at it.
“I know this looks awful, but trust me you breathe this stuff in, you’ll be floating on a cloud. May I put it on your head?”
Sam nodded at Bucky. Bucky saw and began putting the mask on Sam’s head. “Just breathe.” He told Sam. Bucky turned on the tank. It hissed a little. Not too bad. Sam laid back, closed his eyes, and started to deep breathe. It hit him instantly. Sam anxiety escaped him completely. He was zen. Laying in the chair, very peacefully.
“Sam, can you hear me?” It was Bucky. But Sam was feeling very chill about it. He liked Bucky. A lot actually. And he trusted him completely to fix his teeth. Which Sam still hadn’t processed yet.
Sam gave Bucky a thumbs up. Bucky lightly laughed. “Okay Sam, just lay back and relax.” Sam’s eyes closed, then opened when he saw a needle coming for his mouth. He didn’t care. He was so relaxed, nothing mattered. He felt the pinch but it wasn’t that bad. Sam had no idea what fixing his teeth even consisted of. Honestly, at this moment, he didn’t really care. Sam continued to lay there as Bucky worked on his teeth. He opened his eyes every now and then to look at Bucky, and Bucky would also divert his gaze to Sam’s. It was really sweet. The whole thing took about 20 minutes. Sam felt the mask being removed from his head. Bummer, he liked it a lot. Sam was a little out of it and loopy, but that was okay. Bucky turned off the light and reclined the chair back up. Sam just sat there.
“Sam? How’re you doing?” Bucky asked, sitting down in the chair next to him. He had his arm on Sam’s. Sam’s eyes moved to Bucky’s arm.
“I’m good.” Sam responded.
“Good to hear. I’m gonna let you sit here for another 15 minutes before I let you leave so you can wake up a bit. I’ll be right back.” Bucky told Sam as he left the room. Sam would spend the next 15 minutes sitting alone in the room. By minute 10, he already felt himself coming back. After the 15 minutes, Bucky walked back into the room. He had his mask pulled down on his face. He also had a huge smile on his face.
“There he is, how’re you feeling Sam?” Bucky walked directly in front of Sam. Sam looked up and made eye contact. He smiled, but without his teeth. “Come on, show me a real smile.” Sam wasn’t even sure what that was. He never smiled with his teeth. But he attempted it. He looked uneasy for sure. “Do you wanna see them?” Bucky asked Sam. Sam realized what was going on. He was at the dentist. Bucky’s dentist. And he just fixed his teeth? No way. Sam first used his tongue to feel his teeth. They were fixed. Holy shit. He didn’t believe his tongue so he brought his finger to his teeth. Fixed. Like it never happened.
“How did you?” Sam started. Bucky pulled out a mirror from a nearby drawer and handed it to Sam. Sam just held the mirror for a moment. He looked at Bucky, then at the mirror. Sam used his finger to lift up his lip to see his front teeth. FIXED. He still had his precious gap, but the ones that were chipped, suddenly weren’t anymore. Sam couldn’t believe it. He started making faces in the mirror to see his teeth better. Then, it hit him. And like a brick. Sam caught a small glimpse of himself and his fixed teeth, and started crying. Bucky immediately knelt down next to him, holding his hand for comfort. Sam allowed this and continued crying. Hard. Bucky was very concerned. Sam spent a few more minutes just letting out his emotions. He needed that. Bucky just quietly sat with him. Sam composed himself, wiping away the tears. Then, he looked at Bucky. The man that just fixed his teeth. He couldn’t help but collapse into him. Bucky held onto him tight. Sam apologized over and over but Bucky kept telling him he didn’t need to apologize. Sam continued crying in Bucky’s arms for a little bit longer. He was so grateful for Bucky he couldn’t even put it into words. Thank you was all he managed to get out. But Bucky understood. Sam gained his composure and stood up from the chair. Sam smiled again. A real, toothy smile.
“Your teeth look great Sam.” Bucky told him. Sam just continued to smile with his teeth. He was so happy. “Besides that, upon checking your teeth, everything else looks good. Did you want to come back for a cleaning sometime?”
“Do I need one?” Sam questioned.
“No not at all. I just thought you’d like to come back and see me is all.” Bucky smiled.
“I would like to come back and see you that’s for sure. Could we maybe be somewhere other than the dentist office though?” Sam joked. This got a chuckle out of Bucky.
“Of course of course.” Sam smiled at him once again, then pulled him in for a hug. It was a very tender, long, sweet hug. These two men had a connection, that’s for sure. After their hug, Bucky escorted Sam out of the office. “I’ll see you soon.” Bucky whispered into Sam’s ear as he led him out. Sam got chills from that. The friendly receptionist waved Sam goodbye, as he walked out of the office. It was a bright, sunny day. A brand new day. A brand new day to conquer.
Bucky likes to be the big spoon when they’re awake because he like to know the one he loves is secure and trusting him in his arms...
However once they sleep he can’t escape the hugging machine. Sam just loves to cuddle and when they sleep he can’t help it. Bucky is his big teddy bear.
Yes is comes from when he was young and had plushies.
(Now AJ and Cass share them)
They fight over who gets to be the big spoon tonight (Bucky loses a lot)
Sometimes they just understand each other and let the other cuddle (or cuddle, depending on what they need)
I’m just soft for them...
This is my art I mainly post on twitter as Vic_draws_betah but I’m trying tumblr out
Hey everyone. I'm writing and drawing a SamBucky horny comic panel. Would the SamBucky nation like to see this? This is just a little sneak peek. Let me know your thoughts and wishes :)
sam wasn't in the "who's worthy of thor's hammer" pissing contest scene in aou because he would've been able to lift it in 2 seconds, putting everyone to shame and automatically making every character arc in development crumble, subsequently turning the mcu into the sam wilson cinematic universe
lord help me. sam letting loose around bucky without realizing it. getting more comfortable. think to the time between tfatws and bnw where they start actually hanging out willingly, and not as disgruntled “work partners”.
sam who got very closed off again after steve left and nat passed because sam thought he was finally okay after riley. sam who thought he wouldn’t lose anymore friends so soon.
sam who finds a friend in bucky. sam who starts leaning into bucky whenever he laughs because somehow they’re always sitting side by side now.
sam who doesn’t mind the way bucky stands close. sam who eventually comes to accept the glaring eyes drilling into the back of his head when bucky decides he’s gotta station himself as the Intimidating Guard Dog behind sam when he’s trying to deescalate a situation.
sam initiating physical touch. because it’s usually always bucky pulling him into a hug. slapping him on the back. but there’s a time where sam reaches for bucky’s hand completely on impulse and
neither of them pull away.
sam who exists so brightly and bucky who is completely and utterly drawn to him. sam who likes to lean into bucky’s warmth. sam who focuses on bucky’s burning hand on his waist (when did it land there? how long had it been there before he realized because he’s so used to the weight on him now?)
sam who watches bucky play with aj and cass unaware of the big grin that’s formed on his face until sarah pokes fun at him. sam who watches the way bucky gets with their cats because of course they’re living together.
sam who didn’t want to sleep on the rides back home because what if— (“just sleep. i’m here.”) sam who now rests his head on bucky’s shoulder without asking. likes the way bucky slumps against him because he’s started napping too.
sam letting himself love again despite everyone he’s ever lost………..
and listen. bucky who’s caught feelings for sam since tfatws (definitely started with something small in cw). bucky who liked sam then but is extremely in love with sam now, when he sees what he’s like open. when bucky sees just how amazing sam is as a friend. as a housemate (which sounds silly until you notice you’re living with the most considerate person around who also side note, smells really nice all the time), as an uncle, a brother, a work partner, a mentor, a hero.
bucky who falls even fucking harder and yearns for sam because of course he’s the one who suggested living together because he can’t- he cant stay away. bucky whose heart beats so damn loud whenever sam is around, getting close, smiling— genuinely smiling at bucky about something he can’t even recall anymore because wow
I had to draw a different take on Sam's original Falcon costume because we don't see it enough. Also, I forever love how the idea was to put Sam in the skimpiest outfit ever, but give him a mask to hide his identity lol
Sam had just hit play on a documentary selected solely because he thought it might help put him to sleep, when his phone began to vibrate. It was his personal cell though - not the one that constantly brought doom and gloom, and maybe even a possible apocalypse or two with every ring - so he only felt slightly put out when he had to roll out of bed to answer it.
“Hello?”
“Can you talk to birds?”
Sam dropped his phone, and honestly, his body felt seconds away from joining it on the floor. But, as always, he rallied and recovered quickly (almost worryingly so to be honest), then picked up his phone and brought it back to his ear.
“Sure,” he said, forcing a joking lilt into his tone. “Can’t everyone?”
There was a pause on the other end of the phone, then a sigh so deep Sam could almost feel it through the phone.
“Sam, this isn’t a laughing matter, and even if it was, you’ve never been funny.”
Bucky calls this "Wilson's daily dose of gossip." because there's no other explanations why would he spend yapping with birds on balcony for more then two hours.
