[Annabelles anxiety lessens as Percy looks at her and smiles. Its a beautiful smile that makes her heart warm though she can still see hes a little distant]
[She knows she didn't say anything wrong. She doesnt need to measure her words around Percy. Even if this was the first time they were meeting in person they'd gone through alot together over letters]
[Hearing him laugh is a beautiful sound and a grin breaks out onto her face hearing him say her name]
A: "Damn fuckin right I am! Annabelle Parker! Baker extraordinaire! Best shot-"
[Whatever she was going to say dies in her throat as Percy gives her that look and those words slam into her with the force of a stampede of wild horses]
A: "I... I... Percy what... why..."
[Annabelle glances ahead of them checking to see if her father and Adelaide are within earshot as if shes afraid of anyone hearing this]
"We were talking about you and Franklin! Why'd ya have to bring that up? I... I..."
[Panic zaps her blood and she tries to calm herself but shes a mess. She fidgets with her fingers and stares at the ground avoiding his gaze for a minute before finding her voice]
A: "I... I wanted to tell her. Trust. Before the Henry shit. Fuck. Percy I... tried okay? I tried but I fucked up! I tried to tell her but what came outta ma mouth was 'lets rob a bank'! I was so fuckin dumb. Tried to take it back but Butch... my girl... shes ride o die Percy. She didn question it!
I'm fucked up Percy. Honest to fuckin gawd. I thought in the heat of the moment with the adrenaline and the masks it would make it easier to confess ya know? Wearing a mask feels safe... but it never came out. I tried again and she didnt even let me finish ma fuckin sentence. Assumed I wanted ta rob another bank and I tried to talk her out of it but she looked so disappointed so... that's why the robberies started..."
[Annabelle is breathing heavily as she brings her trembling hands to her face as tears begin to leak out of her eyes]
A: "And that led to Henry findin us. Tryin to take me, hurting Butch n Arthur. Daddy... he... Percy he..."
[Annabelle chokes on her words clearly distraught but grits her teeth shaking her head desperately trying to will away the emotion]
A: "Everytime I try somethin happens! N even then, that's not even takin into consideration that theres the chance I'll fuck up what we got when she dont feel the same way. She n Arthur got real close and she deserves to find a man who can love her for who she is... not this bumbling coward who thought robbing a bank was easier than a confession"
{Also Percy: Hey you didnt notice you said this thing so lets make it the main focus and forget my issues. Please and thank you.}
{Annabelle loses her goddamn mind. Not sorry.}
{They do have alot wrong with them dont they?}
{I love them your honour}
(Annabelle falters, and Percy realises that maybe she wasnāt as prepared to talk about this as he thought. As her nervousness builds, so does Percyās regret for asking at all, and he finds himself at a loss for what to do.)
Oh I- Shit, Annabelle. You- you mentioned it and I just assumed you were ready to talk when I shouldnāt have. Iām sorry, I donāt mean to cause you distress I...
(He watches her dissolve into her explaination with a sympathetic, slightly worried look. Letās rob a bank. Itās almost laughable what they get up to, really. Listening to her, Percy remembers everything theyāve done and now that heās hearing it in person, itās starting to feel more real. He doesnāt know what to make of that.)
(Then she starts crying and his worry increases tenfold. He stops her walking with a hand on her shoulder and they stand in the middle of the pathway together, Percy with no clue what to do or how to help. He looks around and sees that Adelaide and Sammy are much further ahead, seemingly oblivious to whatās happening behind them. Well, they could catch up later. He tries to think of something to say, something comforting or assuring, but his mind turns blank. Still, he tries anyway) Oh- Annabelle. Gosh, I know, it was awful, wasnāt it? Where- oh, letās just sit down, okay?
(He guides her to a relatively soft looking patch of grass before sitting beside her. Once she finishes speaking, he bites his lip, contemplating how he should respond. Then he covers her hand with his own, hoping itās the right move) Please donāt say such things, Annabelle. Youāre the last person I would ever consider a coward, believe me. And you canāt just say you donāt love her for who she is after everything else youāve said about her!
You- look, I know itās scary. You donāt know if this will impact your friendship or if itās worth it at all. Iāve been there before. But you know Butch, more than anyone else in the world. What if she reciprocates? Itās not like she would abandon you at the drop of a hat, is it? If youāre going to drown yourself in the possibilities, at least acknowledge the pleasant ones too.
