Spur of the moment Mega Skarmory redesign
Just saw all the new megas and ohoh,,, one way or another I will be dissecting these designs
After all these years we can finally judge whether the official Mega Meganium is a better design than this one I doodled for fun when I was 18
Lol Palworld really thought they could copy Pokémon's homework and get away with it
600 note anniversary of this post which no matter how long since seems to rile up Palworld defenders lolol
anyways back to pokemon design noodling. paradox staraptor ideas ive been mulling over, taking the past element and making a bird a nonavian dinosaur. also a little bit of kangaroo, mostly in relation to how they box each other. snatched the blue from its shiny colors bc i like it
Drew Ubausagi for my pookie and Berumusu for myself<33

Last night I dreamt that a Legends Celebi game was announced, and in the footage there was a Johtonian Lombre evolution that the player could climb on top of to cross rivers~
Gouging fire redesign!
I don't hate the OG, there's a lot right with it, but I do find it the weakest design in the trio. Here's what I played with:
Simplified the horns/skull (I appreciate the accurate rendition of a styracosaurus skull, but it's just so much being that tall with that many horns)
Gave it a beak
Messed with the red head frill shape to make it a little more unique from the OG. I extended it up into the skull a bit to make the skull feel less disjointed from the rest of the head.
De-emphasized the claws a little, not sure why we're emphasizing them on a herbivore? I also added a little reverse dew claw in a nod to both cats and the placement of the 4th and 5th digit on ceratopsids
took off the back leg stripes, they're just a little too busy for me and stand out a little unnatural next to the greys and browns
added some diamond spots on the lower neck to compensate
made those spots as well as the front rectangles blue to add some contrast to all the red and green
Took away the back leg ring and made the back toes a little more ceratopsid-like. It bugs me how close the OG's back half is to Entei's regular form.
(assuming the OG has two back sails and the HOME render just doesn't show the other one), I changed it to only one back sail. Both adds more emphasis to the front half and adds to what I feel is a very centered design in general, with the front horn and all
A couple things I enjoy and kept from the original:
the yellow head crest being what forms the lower horns, LOVE THAT
modifying the front leg ring into the two rectangles, which I read as more scale-like
the very large front heavy/hump back upper torso, great body shape to complement the skull
using more saturated colours on the skull, considering it was probably used as a display feature
PT 2 QUICK: I just realized there is NO REASON to put green in here. The other two have red bits beside their eye. Now I get it, Entei already has red surrounding its eyes, but there is no reason a lighter red couldn't be used
This looks WAY more cohesive lollll
It's been another hot minute since I've posted anything, so take a generational distribution analysis of the new Pokémon Concierge Netflix trailer:
(puppets featured): Panpour, Wingull, Ratatta, Hoppip, Eevee, Dragonite, Charmander, Lampent, Pansear, Pansage, Mudkip, Pidgeot, Snorlax, Seel, Diglett, Dedenne, Skiploom, Furrett, Metagross, Wooper, Psyduck, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Magikarp, Graveller
(patterns/symbols featured): Ursaring, Charizard, Pidgey, Venusaur, Stantler, Ledian, Farfetch'd, Mankey, Slowpoke, Mantine, Shellos (West Sea), Horsea, Oddish, Bellossom, Omanyte, Shellder, Staryu, Corsola, Starmie, Pikachu, Luvdisc, Wailord, Pachirisu, Fletchling, Gastrodon (West Sea)
Meaning the puppets are distributed: 13 gen one | 4 gen two | 3 gen three | 0 gen four | 4 gen five | 1 gen six | 0 gen seven | 0 gen eight | 0 gen nine
And the pictured/symbolic ones are distributed: 13 gen one | 6 gen two | 2 gen three | 3 gen four | 0 gen five | 1 gen six | 0 gen seven | 0 gen eight | 0 gen nine
Together the distribution being: 26 gen one | 10 gen two | 5 gen three | 3 gen four | 4 gen five | 2 gen six | X | X | X
Which is 26 gen one and 24 not gen one
Here's the data plugged into a pie chart:
Rather unremarkably, gen 1 by far gets the most distribution, representing just over half of all pokémon featured in the trailer. Gen 2 gets the nextmost rep (average 1 out of 5 pokemon), which is unsurprising considering the trend of gen 2 pokémon getting more space in marketing over the last couple years. 3-6 get minimal representation, and 7+ get none at all.
For reference, this is what a fair distribution would look like when considering the pokédex count for each generation:
Obviously there's some major regional preferences in this show. Gen 1 is just about 3x more presented than its ratio in the pokédex (and honestly, this is tame compared to some other regional distributions I've analyzed in the past). Now I'm curious which pokémon projects have the most and least balanced regional distributions, perhaps I'll make more of these to compare?
(the very pretty trailer)
It's been a hot minute, so here's a little edit of the gen 1 starters with more modern-looking proportions. Was just curious how it would look, and tbh FRLG Sugimori art Charmander's eyes are pretty uncanny to me now.

Fire/Psychic
“When a Magcargo loves its trainer dearly, it longs to be able to hold them. By concentrating brain power it is able to store all its heat into its shell. This results in its evolution, Lumolusk”
Alrighty! With all of them finished, here is a size comparison chart of all 80 Fakemon from my Great Lakes inspired Pokémon region!
So, which Pokémon of the Norre region would end up on your team?
Thank you everyone for the kind words in the tags, im glad you’re all enjoying this project!
