msaimeephillips On the occasion of his final @bbcradio1 show, I wanted to tell a little story about @nicholasgrimshaw.
I never thought I would leave NY, it was part of the fabric of my being. He talked me into coming to London “for a couple of weeks” to celebrate his last 10pm show, to hang with him on a “relaxing” vacation in Spain, and then to be there for his first Breakfast Show. The ensuing 14 days were absolute chaos in the best way possible and completely altered the course of my life, beginning with a wild nighttime radio show finale, then a messy trip to Ibiza, and finally a pub quiz at which he introduced me to my future husband. I arrived that week in late August 2012 for a visit and I had so much goddamn fun I never left. And that is exactly what it’s like with Grimmy, his gravitational pull is so strong it will sweep you off your feet and onto his planet, whether you feel like you “belong” or not. These photos are all from those two weeks in late summer 2012, a perfect pictorial representation of two weeks in the life of Nick Grimshaw.
I look at them and see the true magic of Grimmy: he’s not just a DJ, he’s an alchemist, mixing the most unlikely people together and making magic. He’s not just a presenter, he’s a pied piper, with a neverending stream of devoted followers (myself included) whom he leads to the promised land of FUN time and time again. Being in his orbit makes you feel cooler, smarter, funnier…part of something. THAT is the magic of Nick Grimshaw, whether you’re a friend, a listener, a colleague or just a chance meeting on the street. He has time for you. He brings you in. He makes you laugh and radiates an immediate easy warmth and inclusivity the likes of which I’ve never experienced. His persona on the radio isn’t a persona, it’s the real thing, which makes listening to the show as his actual friend feel just like hanging out with him IRL. I’ll miss that a lot, knowing that wherever I am I can tune in and feel like I’m with my pal. But all of these things combined are the reasons I know that the end of his time at Radio 1 is only the beginning. Wherever he goes next he will shine, as he always has, and he’ll bring us all along for the ride. ♥️
Harry: Hi Grimmy, it’s Harry. I cannot believe it’s your last week on Radio 1. My favorite time being on Radio 1 with you is probably forming the straight thru crew and going straight in from the Brits. But also, every time that could have been so scary for me playing new music it was always so nice for me to have a friend there, and it always felt so safe. And thank you for being my favorite show on radio. Thank you for being a friend. And I miss you. And I can’t wait to see you soon. Good luck with everything, I love you byeeeeee.
Nick: Thank you Harry, who sounds a little bit there like he’s been on the straight thru crew. Very deep! Straight thru crew himself there. Hey but thank you guys, we’ve had so…Harry’s a massive part of this show, massive part of the Breakfast Show as well. He used to come in on like, the night time show, when me and Annie once did a nighttime show. Not Switch, after that. And I remember Annie had to sign loads of Annie Mac Presents albums, and she had to do like a 1000, so about 500 of them are actually Harry Styles signing Annie Mac.
Sinead: No way!
Nick: Yeah. Well she’s a busy woman, int she? Got her fingers in many pies, she can’t be signing everything.
Sinead: Just think that’s like a collector’s item, surely.
Nick: Probably but you’ll never know. Is it Annie? Is it Harry? Similar hair, similar handwriting

ONE BED WOMB – August 22, 2013
[through gritted teeth] im soooooo normal about media
me being raised on 90s internet rules where telling someone online your favorite color was giving out too much personal information watching gen z youtubers give out their real first and last names and telling everyone the exact city and apartment complex where they live
some very important info re: paid accounts~
I am not a lawyer, but I can decently interpret legalese and, being as I also suffer from tl;dr syndrome and assume others may as well, I took one for the team and went through the updated TOS for the post+ accounts and highlighted (what I understand to be) the most pertinent information, which ultimately comes down to this:
You cannot monetize copyrighted works (aka charge and earn money from fanfic, fanworks, etc) and if you do decide to put your fanworks behind a paywall via Tumblr, when you are inevitably sued, Tumblr will not protect you and will not defend you and you alone, personally, will be responsible for whatever monetary damages said lawsuit results in.
If anyone is a lawyer and knows I've gotten any of this wrong, please do not hesitate to correct me/this post.
Screenshots taken from Tumblr's TOS (updated 7-21-21), Stripe's Account Agreement, and the post+ FAQs.
1. Your paid account will not be hosted by tumblr; it is routed through a 3rd party.
2. By signing up for a paid account, you're entering into an agreement with Stripe, so in addition to Tumblr's TOS, you are also bound to Stripe's TOS.
3. Stripe, like Tumblr, will not defend you or protect you against any lawsuits.
4. Furthermore, you may end up owing Stripe money (indemnify = compensate)
5. Tumblr's TOS specifically states that you can't put any content on your post+ account that violates any laws, including laws that protect intellectual property rights of others. This is super important, because Tumblr's post+ FAQ also states that you can post anything that you would regularly post on tumblr, which I'm sure many will take to mean that gifsets, fanworks, etc are fair game, since all of that stuff can be posted on tumblr now. However, the difference is, you're not making money from the fanworks you're posting or reblogging now. Once money enters the equation, the game changes.
Tumblr is making it seem like any and all content goes for post+ accounts, knowing 90% of this site is fanworks. This is not true and you'll be opening yourself up for lawsuits if you charge for fanworks.
6. Tumblr further disclaims any and all liability in any legal issues.
tl;dr: Please do not make a post+ account, bc you will be opening yourself to lawsuits and if that happens, Tumblr's response will be not our problem, you agreed to all the terms which said you couldn't do that, sorry not sorry. Please protect yourself.
nicholasgrimshaw So some news….I have decided that after 14 years on air it's time for me to leave Radio 1. I have truly had the time of my life - my childhood dream of working here was everything i’d imagined and somehow even more. But I've done all the things I set out to do, from Sunday nights with Annie, to Weekend Breakfast, the 10pm Evening Show breaking new bands, to the wild ride of The Breakfast Show and now Drive….so at the grand old age of 36 I've decided that it's time to move on.
Radio 1 has been a HUGE chunk of my life, one that i am massively proud of and grateful for, I have had the time of my life. I want to thank you, the R1 listeners for joining me on this journey. Thank you for being a massive part of my life and sharing your lives with me on the radio every day. I grew up wanting to connect with people, to feel accepted and you accepted me as part of your daily life and for that I will be eternally grateful. Thank you for providing endless hilarity, passion and an unquenchable eagerness to ‘avvvvv it!
These past 14 years on air have been more than a job, I have met people who have had a profound effect on my life, who have changed my life, who have become my best friends. I've played songs that stopped me in my tracks and had moments together with the R1 family & listeners that I will never, ever forget. So thank you.
When I was about 12 my Dad brought me to London and I made him take me to Radio 1 where I peered through the windows and said “i’ll work there one day” and after 10 years of trying hard to make it happen I did. Thank you to my Dad for taking me to see my dream in real life and my family for endlessly encouraging me to make it happen. It was a life long dream to be here and now it’s time to make some other dreams come true.
carrd? nah. if you want to learn about me you have to connect bits of information from my occasional sentence-long tumblr tags and gay little rants I’ve been putting there since 2016. that is the truest wellspring of self.
happy father’s day to bobby horan only
i think gen z ppl need to stop trying to moderate social media– which is impossible to moderate– and just go on forums already. “this is for mlm, wlw dni” bruh i’m telling you, if you discover mlm forums you’ll go bananas. everyone there will be mlm, i promise. this is genuinely friendly advice. stop wasting your time trying to control your twitter and tik tok, it won’t work because it’s designed to not be controlled.
I’ve said it before but the loss of forums in place of homogenized mass social media is a huge blow to the development of communities, and trying to implement forum rules, logic & expectations on social media is doomed to failure and just results in unnecessary hostility and argument.
“While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.”
