I've been a fan of Dr. Finkelstein (and The Nightmare Before Christmas in general) since I was around 14 years old, and I only recently began officially selfshipping with him in my late 20s. Finkelstein is an extremely important character to me, and I love him more than I can describe. If you don't like him, that's completely fine, but please respect me and don't send hate, nor reasons why I shouldn't like him, because that’s rude.

this is really interesting in how it frames disability/low spoons/etc as not being a series of internal symptoms, but specifically a situation in which daily tasks increase in complexity. for example i used to be able to wash the dishes normally. but now mental and physical issues combine to make that situation have a lot of prequalifications (do I have time, energy, how long can I do it without being sore the next day) that means many more steps are involved in getting that single physical act of washing a dish to be done.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

Whether or not a disabled person is actually capable of performing work is irrelevant if no employer actually wants to hire them. That's cool you know a guy in a wheelchair who works at a retail job or whatever but I do promise that it isn't disabled people limiting themselves but rather employers who will have an easier time hiring an abled person instead of providing accommodations to a disabled person- this is especially true in contexts where disability doesn't allow you to have a consistent full-time work schedule as opposed to just having some physical limitation in the workplace (unpredictable sick days, frequent doctor appointments, long-term hospital stays, etc. Even something as minor as needing one single day off a month for endometriosis will make you undesirable to employers)

For those who don't know: Ikumi Nakamura is the woman who was senior artist on Bayonetta, and designed the titular character along with Hideki Kamiya.
