“I gotta say I’m loving this warm weather we’ve been having.”
“ me too !! ” summer exclaimed. “ i love the way the sun feels against my skin. it’s very refreshing. ”
❝ i’m pretty sure i’m supposed to be in central park… ❞ she eyes her surroundings with suspicion. it certainly doesn’t look the same the last time she’s seen it. ❝ pretty sure this isn’t it… ❞
“ um, welcome to olympus prep, ” summer says, smiling lightly. unsure what else to say, she waited for the unfamiliar girl to respond.
“You think they’re ever going to provide us with maps?” The question wasn’t intended for a single person, more of a low muse to herself. But if any unsuspecting stranger had heard it, then what was Cassandra going to lose? It was better to make friends, she’d been told. Spotting another… camper ( she wasn’t sure what to call them, but whatever ), she directed her next query at them. “You know where we’re meant to drop our belongings?”
“ i think they will. it’s pretty hard to navigate, so maps would be good. but until they do, i don’t mind showing you around !! ” summer offered, a smile gracing her lips. “ well, that depends. do you know who your godly parent is ?? if yes, i can definitely take you to the right place. ”
“You haven’t changed all that much, Summer. I’m glad.” Flynn shot her a smile. “Things aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be, I can definitely hold my own, but I know who to call if I’m in trouble.”
“ i’ll always be me, flynn. i promise. in a world full of things to be feared, we need more kindness, and that’s always what i’ll offer. kindness, ” summer said. “ that’s good to hear. we’ve had too many bad things happen to us in our lifetime. at least we’ll always be prepared. ”
If she’d really wanted to, Hadlee likely could have made her way down the hall and to her dorm with everything in hand without too much of a hassle. Physical obstacles were all but what she was made for, after all, and she knew from experience that she was tougher than she looked. But gods, the idea of getting help from someone was like a wave of relief. “That would be great, honestly.”
A small smile graced her face. “Oh I’ve been in and out for a few years, but uh,” she gestured vaguely at Max. “Sometimes it can be hard.”
summer discarded her empty starbucks in the nearest trash can. “ i’m summer, by the way. if you ever need anything, you can find me with the other demeter kids !! ” she said.
the blonde tucked a lock of hair behind her hair to keep it from falling into her face. “ oh, i can only imagine, ” summer said with a nod, “ he’s very cute, ” she then added, waving at the boy. “ you know, i’m pretty good with kids. if you ever need a helping hand, i’d love to help. i can only imagine how hard it is to balance everything. i hope this doesn’t sound weird or anything, i really would just like to help, ” she rambled.
“–so. how does this….w o r k ?? for real, i…have no idea how to turn this thing on.”
daniel held himself tentatively in front of the coffee machine, the array of buttons and symbols completely throwing off the kid. he could take apart and put together a computer in a few minutes–but this? privileged lifestyle stunted him.
“i really just want a cappuccino…”
“ i can show you !! ” summer exclaimed, taking a step forward. “ it’s simple, really. ”
summer approached the coffee machine, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. she grabbed a cup and placed it under the machine.
“ all you have to do is press this button, then this one, ” she explained, motioning towards the buttons, “ and, if it’s out of water, you refill it by opening this compartment. see, it’s simple !! ”
❝ HONEY, this city is crawling with the likes of us. ❞ a pause, and a small scoff, ❝ FUCK, THE COUNTRY IS. and you think all there is to this life is some temple in central park where we worship our parents who didn’t give two shits about us as kids and learn to hit things? ❞ a sigh, and two fingers come up to his face to massage his temples. he was trying to speak down to people less. ❝ in any case, it sounds like you need to get out more. ❞
“ no, i figured there was more, i just didn’t need anything else. i never really went looking for more, ” she explained, her voice small. “ i get out plenty, ” summer’s lips shifted from a smile to a slight frown. “ i just don’t like to drink, i’m sorry. but if you’re looking for company, i wouldn’t mind going with you !! i love talking to people, ” she said, her smile returning brighter than ever.
Max, though still comparatively small, hadn’t been light in at least two years, and frankly the only reason Hadlee found herself carrying him in the first place was her own fear of setting him down while in the city. But she would take kindness where it was given, and the blonde was offering more than she would have asked for. Certainly more than she would have particularly expected.
A smile broached her lips as she stepped into the familiar building, turning around once inside. “Thank you. Really, it’s… it’s very kind of you.”
“ do you need help with your stuff ?? ” summer asked, walking alongside the girl.
just by looking at her, summer knew she was more than capable of handling herself. either way, summer wanted to help. helping was in her nature, always had been. “ oh, it’s really nothing. don’t even mention it !! you live here now, which means we’re like family. and even though i barely know you, i have your back, ” summer insisted.
“That’s good! Me? I’m still running the ol’ family business.” He chuckled. “That and keeping an eye on the city like usual.”
“ you really need to give yourself a break, flynn, ” summer reminded him, though she knew he never would. “ if you ever need help with anything, you can call me. you don’t have to do everything by yourself all the time. please promise you’ll ask for help someday ?? ” she pleaded with a smile.
“Oh my god! Summer Gold!” Flynn leaned in to hug her. “I’m good, yeah! It’s been forever. How are you?”
summer leaned in to hug him, her smile only widening. “ i’m great !! i’ve been working on a lot of stuff since we last talked, ” she said. “ what have you been up to these days ?? ”
Her gaze lingered briefly on the school building, itself, the familiarity of it towering over Hadlee in a way she had yet to put into words. With one bag slung over her shoulder, one in her left hand, and her son held to her torso with her right, the young woman made her way towards the school doors without glancing one way or the other. It had been months since she’d been present, what with complications at James Enterprises and some brief issues with Max’s health. Nonetheless, Hadlee was determined not to let the opinions of others bother her. Their judgment and their criticism were their own problem–not hers.
And the inability to open the door was hers. A small sigh slid past her lips as she stared at it for a moment, working out a plan of action.
summer found herself wandering idly through the campus, her emerald hues taking in the landscape in nostalgic waves. she felt overly excited to be back at the school, for some of her best memories occurred on the premises. finally, summer walked a familiar path towards the main entrance, carrying a large duffel in one hand, and a starbucks green tea in the other. she immediately noticed another figurine standing just by the entrace. summer smiled at the sight of the girl and her child.
“ need a hand ?? ” summer offered, though she didn’t wait for the brunette to answer before pulling the door open. “ after you, ” summer said, motioning inside.
❝ SUPPOSEDLY, there’s a new A-list demigod wine bar opening tonight a few blocks away. ❞ an ARCH of his brow, RUMORS are something he doesn’t generally care for, but there are certain things that his curiosity cannot resist. ❝ let’s sneak in and i’ll buy you a drink –– or ten –– WHAT DO YOU SAY? ❞
summer stares at the boy with wide eyes, but a soft smile rests upon her rosy lips. “ oh, that’s really quite interesting !! in all of my time here at olympus prep, we’ve never had a demigod bar, ” she gushed. “ sneak in ?? why would we do that ?? besides, i really don’t drink often. i prefer non-alcoholic beverages, like warm tea or lemonade in the summertime, ” summer explained.
I gotta say… It feels pretty good to be back.
“ flynn !! ” summer exclaimed with a wide grin, “ oh my gods, it’s really you -- i feel like it’s been ages. how have you been all this time ?? ”
"You don’t seem it."
"That's really nice of you, but if you knew me better, you'd know I'm no different than the rest."
“Why did people stop giving mix-tapes to their sweethearts? I mean they are so cute.”
"I dunno. I want to make mixtapes, that's adorable!"
