Tulpa and BLANKTS is the new project of Ukraine native, LA based Tulpa and Toronto based BLANKTS. Kiss Fight (ft. Gnash) off their new EP is a refreshing track that pairs a classic piano sound with the electronic genre.
Fickle Friends, aka the female 1975, just dropped a new single. I have been following these chickie poppers for a while now, impatiently waiting a full length. (I dunno when it is gonna happen but there are tons of singles to tide us over. My favourite being "Say No More".) This jam is called "Brooklyn" and it is pretty fab. Especially the bridge. Warning: It is gonna get stuck in your head.
😍😍😍 You have such amazing taste in music!!😍😍😍
This is seriously one of my favourite kind of compliments. Thank you so much! :) Come off anon if you want to talk about bands with me!
One of my favourite Canadian pop acts, Caveboy, just recently released "Superbia", 7 minutes of pure gold. Make sure you have this on full blast when you listen. The intro sounds amazing, and then when you don't think it can get any better, the vocals come in. Way too good. Dark chickie pop at it's finest. I have reviewed all of their other music aside from "Color War", which is also amazing but I somehow completely missed the release back in June! Check the posts out here: https://goo.gl/keeu1z, https://goo.gl/8WXqh6, https://goo.gl/gxO38O
I waited very impatiently for Zella's next single when she announced at a festival this summer that she would be dropping one in October. She played this at the show and I so hoped it would be this one. This song is a huge shift for Zella- it is her happiest work to date aside from Mustang Kids. There isn't a hint of dark chickie pop and yet I am okay with that because the song is sun kissed and sweet and somehow still Zella. Her next single, "Hunnie Pie", is dropping on November 18th, and if it is even half as good as "Man on the Moon", I won't be disappointed.
XYLO, a dark chickie pop favourite of mine, are about to blow up. A brother sister electropop duo (think Broods) currently touring with The Naked and Famous, these 2 have been putting out tons of awesome releases lately. (My two personal favourites being "America" and "Dead End Love".) Their latest single "Setting Fires", produced by The Chainsmokers, will definitely get them the recognition they deserve.
I had high expectations for Tigertown's new single "Papernote" after obsessing over their fantastic single "Lonely Cities" all summer, and I was not disappointed! Feeling the Mowgli's vibes in this song with the vocals and the lyrics, but it is also distinclty Tigertown. It does feel like this was released too late though; it totally feels like a summer tune.
The Mowgli's just dropped their third album! Upon first listen, my favourite song has to be "Arms & Legs". It kind of reminds me of "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes or maybe "I Don't Mind" by Defeater. Or something off the Juno soundtrack. But I also really liked "Bad Things", "Alone Sometimes" and "Open Energy". Check it out!
Transviolet have dropped their second single of 2016, and HOLY CRAP IS IT EVER GOOD. They have yet to release anything that I don't like. Actually, they haven't even released anything that I don't LOVE WITH ALL MY HEART. This song is fricken fantastic dark chickie pop goodness with an awesome sound and stellar vocals as always. And I think I might just cave and get tickets to see Lany just so that I can see Transviolet open for them.
I was super excited to see a new Vérité song on the New Music Friday Spotify playlist, and even more excited when I heard the opening line "so I heard you found somebody else". Yes, this is a cover of the 1975's "Somebody Else". It was already amazing, and now it has been dark chickie popified by Vérité, so of course I love this version too. Check it out!
Brother sister indie pop duo from New Zealand, Broods, released their sophomore album called Conscious back in June, and tomorrow night they will be playing The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver! This album is totally killer. It must have been hard to create something even greater than Evergreen, their debut album, but somehow they pulled it off. They announced the album by dropping the first track off it, “Free”. This song is a totally fierce anthem, sung loud and strong by Georgia Nott, completely different from anything on their first album. It’s one of those “I don’t care what you think” songs. Georgia confidently sings “it’s clear that you think I’m inferior, whatever helps you sleep at night”. The second single that they dropped from this album was “Couldn’t Believe”, another upbeat, loud song, with an amazing sound. These two songs are definitely highlights from the album, along with the super catchy track “Heartlines”. This song was co-written with Lorde, and her contributions are definitely noticeable. Georgia’s voice on this track (and all other tracks on this album) is just totally gorgeous, it feels almost addicting. And so are the choruses- the melody she sings is something I want to listen to over and over. “Full Blown Love” is another super catchy song from the album. This song could be a Top 40 pop song. Heck, it sounds like it could be a bonus track on Taylor Swift’s 1989. “Freak of Nature” is a slower song from the album, featuring Tove Lo, and the harmonies are incredibly beautiful. The production in this song builds perfectly. “All of Your Glory” is heartbreakingly beautiful as Georgia sings “don’t need an apology to make it right, I just need you as a whole. Don’t need an apology to make it right, I want you in all of your glory”. I could honestly write about how great every song on this album is (I am having a super difficult time picking which ones to write about right now, they are all just so good) but instead I would suggest you just go listen to it! What to expect from my dark chickie pop favourites tomorrow night at The Vogue Theatre? A totally amazing show that is totally worth the price of a ticket, considering they play 20+ songs (almost their entire new album and many of their older fan favourites). There are still tickets available for this show, and I would 100% recommend going. And definitely come early to check out Jarryd James- he actually has a collab with Broods on his new album, called “1000x”, which is another gorgeous song. Georgia and Jarryd’s voices go perfectly together. I’m crossing my fingers they will sing this one tomorrow night! Can’t wait!
It has been exactly one month since I went to see The Killers at their “surprise show” at The Commodore in Vancouver. They were playing Pemberton that weekend and when I heard on the radio that they decided to stop here first, I actually, literally, cried. I had been waiting years to see The Killers live. I was super anxious the next few days, before tickets went on sale, because I was so so nervous I wouldn’t get through. I decided I would go alone to up my chances of getting a ticket, and I am so glad I did that. I ended up getting a ticket by some miracle. Plus, I made a friend that I hung out with the entire show. Seriously people, don’t be afraid to go to shows alone. All you have to do is talk to someone who is also alone, and voila, you have your concert buddy. That way you don’t have to buy two tickets for a show and then end up having no one to sell it to. Since that concert, I also went to see Foals on my own, and I made a friend at that one too. Moral of the story: It is okay to go to a concert alone. And it is a great way to make friends. Sadly, because the concert was a month ago, I don’t think I have enough details left in my mind to really break down the show for you. And I definitely was not going to take notes at this show. But what I can tell you is this: they were so fantastic and I was so grateful I got to see them at a thousand-person venue. It was intimate and it was magical hearing the entire audience sing along to every song. You don’t get that at a lot of shows. I was also in total awe of Brandon Flowers’ songwriting. I mean, I have always been, but it was even more amazing to see him performing these songs with the same passion I hear in his voice when I listen to them on my iPod.
I have been obsessing over Ofelia K's new single, "I Love My Lawyer". (Not newest single though, "Killing Me" just came out at the end of July.) This song is different from anything that is out right now- music AND lyrics-wise. The beat is super cool and fun. I love how it starts with just vocals and slowly the beat builds. And the lyrics are just kinda bizarre. Which I think is one of the reasons I love this song so much. Check it out!
Last week, Edmonton-based alternative pop-rock band Good Nature announced the release of their debut EP, Waves. Set to come out on August 4th, this upbeat mix of tunes is going to knock your socks off- their songs are chock-full of energy and good vibes, as are their live shows. With catchy choruses and plentiful hooks, this is an EP you will want to listen to over and over. Good Nature placed in the regional top 10 of CBC’s searchlight competition with their song “Waves”.
