i think americans should have to put a banner above their post that says U.S. CENTRIC ADVICE/INFORMATION. i think political posts should clarify that they are giving protest/societal/class information relevant only to the USA i think i would like to stop getting halfway through a post with really good information and then realising it is not widespread advice and is only applicable in the united states of america
for the love of GOD can we PLEASE stop treating us-centric advice as applicable to the whole entire world. Please. beyond anything else, i do not think you guys understand how difficult it makes it for young people to interact with and learn information relevant to them.
at a certain point, treating us-american advice as universally applicable borders on misinformation. i am not saying that it is done maliciously, but it is dangerous at worst. i do not want younger people going around assuming that certain laws do/do not apply to them and getting in trouble because of it. i worry about what 'fundamental/constitutional/labour rights' are only legally defensible in the USA. i worry about kids who do not know yet to wonder where the advice is for, and take it as fact because a post that reads "EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS" begins with "EVERYONE".
okay yes all the tags are very very good points but i would like to point out the main reason i made this post, which is that
if you are non-american then it can be dangerous to hold beliefs about your rights that are only applicable in the US.
i am australian and i have seen young australians have completely us-american perceptions on the rights they hold (or do not hold) in regards to protest, police officers, self-defense, medical care, higher education, debt, and legal proceedings. i am not talking about "boooo americans" i am talking about the genuine danger it might present to have us-centric assumptions in high-stakes situations
(please do not chalk this up to 'if you don't do research then you are stupid'. i made this post with young people in mind. that being said i am willing to bet it also applies to others, ie those who are newer to non-local internet, older folks, or those escaping high-control environments.)
pinterest reposters i no longer have extensive beef with you for i have been informed of a much worse threat to the court of lady normalgirl: people who put my art through AI filters and THEN repost it to pinterest
actually screw it idgaf, everyone go report this guy and or beat them with a stick (ABOMINATION! here is the original comic if u like looking at real art)

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non è la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe però già impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government

please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
we can still save her. but only loudly.
reblog. share. don't scroll past.
nolan's the odyssey has such a fundamentally culturally christian understanding of religion and divinity that it is genuinely jarring to see characters in a supposedly ancient greek historical context describe divinity and its expression in those terms. characters wonder aloud why gods hide themselves (they didn't), question the existence of what nolan interprets the supernatural to be (they wouldn't) and talk of zeus's law (not real, and still somehow bastardized) in the same way we would talk about the ten commandments. it's so out of place. and it taps into that "defy the gods" thing.
like. we can defy the christian god, in a way, because we can choose to not do what he says we ought to. sure. but we cannot defy greek gods in the same way, because the god is not just an entity that commands you but the very thing you are doing. apollo does not just send plagues, he is plague. you know apollo is real because there is plague. plague is not apollo acting in the world, it is an instance of apollo, in the same way that insight is athena, love is aphrodite, harvest is demeter, storms are zeus. gods are not commanding nature and sending signs and acting upon the world, because signs and nature and human nature are themselves the gods. the gods cannot be absent, because we still get ideas, and harvest, and go to war, and feel desire, and hunt. the gods cannot be defied because you cannot defy "getting ideas" or "harvesting" or "having sex" or "dying." to attempt to is entirely futile. like you cannot defy poseidon because you cannot defy the sea. you cannot defy aphrodite because you cannot defy love and reproduction. nature and human nature are unbeatable, and so the gods are unbeatable, because they are nature and human nature.
and it's such a beautiful way of looking at the world, and he just doesn't get that.
Social anxiety is a hell of a drug in general, but getting scared that the staff at your favourite restaurant or coffee shop will realise you're an autistic weirdo who eats exactly the same thing every day is especially wrong-headed. Food service people love autistic weirdos who eat exactly the same thing every day. Do you realise how valuable a reliable repeat customer whose order you cannot possibly fuck up is in that line of work?
Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.
Forgot for a second that Sokka is truly the character of all time because he truly just did all that with no powers, no money and no responsible adults around. Like he organised a schedule that made it possible for the avatar to learn everything in a year, freed nations, learnt a dozen different types of weapons and art forms planned multiple prison breaks, revolutions and actual invasions with nothing but a flying bison, the worlds most powerful children and a boomerang. Coffee was invented for him and for him alone.
✨gay things on bbc merlin✨ s5 e3:
Arthur may be a married man, but he will spend all his time with Merlin because of course he would lol
Looool imagine you are sir Leon and you find the king and his servant roaming the hallways at night while everyone is asleep, and they are clearly hiding something, and the first thing they say is that Merlin is teaching Arthur poetry and you have to live with the knowledge that Arthur and Merlin are probably boinking at night in the hallways of camelot and god knows where else-
Oh, okay, they’re “horse playing” okay yeah yeah cool okay
I NEED YOUR HELP FINDING MERLIN FICS
I am in desperate need of Merlin fics where Merlin doesn’t realize that he outranks all the other servants and should NOT have to hand wash laundry or polish armour himself (let alone muck out the stables)
This isn’t a want it’s a NEED.
Thank you!!!!!
okay but seriously did the directors of Merlin say "okay now look at each others lips with a quick beat of silence" or did Colin and Bradley just decide to do God's work. B/c WHY DO THEY LOOK AT EACH OTEHRS LIPS SO MUCH
Allow me to offer you all merthur fanart… referenced from La belle dame sans merci, 1893 by John William Waterhouse… I love them so much
I need to do more merthur fanart soon 🫶
@merthurmicrofic | enemy | 780 ish words
~
It’s just typical, Merlin thinks, that he has yet to make a single friend but has already made an enemy — and a powerful one at that. The King’s son. The Prince of Camelot. How excellent.
The cold is seeping into his legs, his thin breeches leaving him ill-equipped for a night in the cells. His throat has been dry for a while, and he doesn’t know if he will get any water, or any food. Camelot, from what he has seen, does not seem to be the kind of kingdom where prisoners are treated with mercy.
Things could be worse, though. He has spent all of his previous nights sleeping on the floor, after all, and after the burning he witnessed he understands deeply exactly how dire the situation could be. The plan his mother had concocted out of desperate fear, the notion that he would be sent away for safe keeping, seems laughably ironic now.
There is a soft thudding, the sound of footsteps echoing through the cavernous dungeons. A guard, Merlin assumes, possibly with some water, or food, hopefully both.
“It’s all right,” someone says. “I am in no need of assistance. You may leave your posts.”
Oh shit, Merlin thinks, recognising the haughty voice of Prince Arthur, despite the lack of mockery in his tone. He really, really does not want to get beaten up, but he braces himself for violence anyway, standing up and holding his arms up in front of his chest, fists clenched.
Prince Arthur frowns when he turns the corner and sees Merlin. “What are you doing?”
“Defending myself,” Merlin replies, shoring up his stance.
“Defending yourself,” the prince repeats, as if it’s the silliest thing he’s ever heard. “Of course. From what, exactly?”
Merlin looks him up and down. “From you, obviously.”
“From me? What did you think, that I would fight a man being kept in a cell?”
Merlin does not relax his stance. The prince sighs. “God above. Look, Merlin, was it?” Merlin nods. “I was coming by to let you out.”
Merlin’s jaw drops, and his arms fall down to his sides, useless. “You were— what?”
“I spoke with Gaius. He assured me that what happened earlier will never happen again and that you are generally an intelligent and reasonable sort of lad, who will have learned his lesson by now.” His eyes narrow. “This sort of behaviour does rather contradict his point.”
“I’ve learned my lesson!” Merlin agrees, nodding repeatedly, a little manically. “Definitely, absolutely, will not happen again.” Prince Arthur looks at him, expectant, and Merlin realises his error. “Um, Sire,” he adds, smiling as brightly as he possibly can.
The prince looks up, exhaling sharply. What he is looking for, Merlin does not know. Maybe the aforementioned God Above, though Merlin is quite sure that no Gods, of the old religion or the new, exist in a place such as the one they are occupying.
“All right,” the prince says, producing a key. “I’m going to let you out now, but you must go straight to Gaius’ chambers. And you must not tell anyone of this.”
“Of course not, my lord. I know how to keep a secret,” he promises.
Prince Arthur pauses. He looks up, right at Merlin, as though he is looking through him, as though he can see right into his mind and pry all of his secrets out of him.
Merlin grins, trying to appear as non-threatening and guileless as he possibly can. “Not that I have any to keep,” he says. “Just, you know. Hypothetically.”
“Right,” the prince says, sounding as though he means the opposite. “Well this is not hypothetical. No one can know that I freed you.”
“Why is that?” Merlin asks, unable to stop himself.
“Because if anyone finds out I let you out, they will expect the same treatment, and then the whole kingdom will descend into lawlessness.”
“Ahh, of course. Secrecy sounds very sensible, if that is the alternative,” Merlin says. Prince Arthur smiles, and is transformed by it. His whole face seems to soften, and all of a sudden Merlin realises that they are of an age, that the prince can’t be much older than he is. And he’s gorgeous. Undeniably, obviously, startlingly gorgeous. Oh, Merlin thinks. Oh no.
The grating sound of metal upon metal disturbs his train of thought before it can become any more wildly inappropriate. “Go,” the prince urges, voice soft, low, “and do not end up here again.” He steps backwards as the door opens, and then turns, walking towards the stairs that will lead him out of the dungeon.
“I’ll try,” Merlin calls out, taking a deep breath of fresh (well, fresher) air.
“Try very hard,” Prince Arthur calls back. Merlin grins. Believe me, he thinks, I will.
transmascs : hey so our lives are closely tied to women's rights, we are affected by legislature restricting reproductive rights, and we would not be able to express ourselves at all if it wasn't for the work of feminists in the last two centuries and -
TRFs : transmen need to shut THE FUCK UP about feminism it's not about YOU birthday boy, check your privilege #bombthatkillsallTMEs #transfeminism
Gonna piss off other transfems even more now. Yall, I think transmascs genuinely have a good case for having more stake in feminism than us.
Reproductive rights and body autonomy are no fucking joke, and the patriarchy wants nothing more than to force them to be women. Cause, if people can just stop being women, if they can just be men, then the patriarchy has no real power.
The liberation of trans men is the final boss of the patriarchy, proof that people can be free to simply walk away from what it has assigned to them.
Liberating trans men is how we liberate us all; we have to stand with them, for our own survival just as much as theirs.
We can't lose them; I don't know why so many of my transfem sisters can't see how important transmasc people are, but know that if we lose them we are all damned.
If you won't stand with our transmasc siblings out of love, I frankly can't understand you; but if standing with them has to be selfish, then know that our only hope of being free to live our own lives rests with them just as much as us. You can't be free without them; if for whatever gods forsaken reason you can't love them, remember you need them.
