I feel a little sad tonight and that means I’ll take a good quote no matter who said it. You’re right, Beth Ditto. This is my mantra.  It’s exhausting trying to be everything to everyone. I learnt some time ago that if you can just pick and choose the people you think are worth it, your life will be easier and you will spend your time happier. Do whatever makes you happy and when it doesn’t any longer, stop doing it. Save your energy and your focus and your love for the people that deserve it, including yourself.

I feel like this A LOT. I take on things - sometimes too many things - in the hope that I can make a difference and what usually happens is that people get annoyed with me and don't want to be around me any more. At least my husband and kids are consistent.

I LOVE campaigns which focus on "Don't rape" instead of "don't get raped" - it's offensive TO MEN to suggest that men can't possibly control themselves around a woman.

I'm 30 - so a mature student - and I'm a woman - so amongst the group which has experienced a 25% drop in going to college in Scotland since 2006 thanks to the short-sighted shift in focus away from life-long learning and part-time study to the 16-19 age bracket. I consider myself very lucky to have a place at college and to be able to retrain for new employment so that I can support my family. When I was about twenty years old, I met an old pastor's wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn't believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking - the first in his life. And she told him he would have to go outside and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. "He said to her, 'Mama, I couldn't find a switch, but here's a rock you can throw at me.' All of the sudden a mother understood how the situation felt from the child's point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone. The mother took the boy onto her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. Because violence begins in the nursery - one can raise children into violence.

A chicken described as Britain's "last battery hen" has been given a new home, marking the end of an era for commercial laying hens, a charity said.

The hen, which has been named Liberty, will enjoy retirement at a farm in Chulmleigh, Devon, where it will join about 60 other ex-battery hens.

An EU directive abolishing the barren (battery) cage system comes into effect on 1 January, when egg producers will have to provide hens with larger cages enabling them to spread their wings and move around.

In reality, the new cage system is only marginally less cruel than the old system. These hens are unlikely to ever see outside or to be able to perform natural behaviours like scratching and dust bathing. Please, spend a little more and buy free range - otherwise you are supporting the intrinsic cruelty that this method of farming inflicts.
