Mermay Day 16 Riyo Reaper-- Leopard Seal

I had a lot of trouble deciding what type of animal to make Riyo. My first thought was a barracuda, a type of fish known for its viciousness and quickness. Then, after watching several tiktoks, I decided to make her a leopard seal.

Leopard seals are known to be the only species of seal that will hunt other pinnipeds, and they're dangerous to humans.They're also very curious animals, and young leopard seals often hunt with their parents. The idea of a tiny Riyo tailing after Enjin and playing with the prey he catches was too cute, so I settled. I also just really like leopard seals. They hit that perfect intersection of adorable and pants-shittingly terrifying that I chase after.

Mermay Day 9 Zanka Nijiku-- Bettafish

I chose to make Zanka a Bettafish b/c they're aquarium fish. B. splendens (Siamese fighting fish) are the typical aquarium betta, and they're bred to be pretty w/ a range of colours and fin shapes. Despite their reputation, they're also very hardy, and can survive in low oxygen environments that would kill many other freshwater fish. They also are very adaptable and will eat whatever they can to survive.

Zanka was born in a prestigious family and is "the closest the ground gets to a spoiled rich kid." Despite this, he is very hardy and adaptable, and he's always looking to get better & stronger. Betta fish are from S/E Asia, around Vietnam & Thailand, which is a bit low for Zanka's canonical Japanese origin. Despite this, I think Betta fish still fit him.

i genuinely encourage non black people to engage with this, who might be worried they can't because of the word "nigga" because they feel like it's overstepping. the only way it would be overstepping is saying it to me when ur not black, but please don't be afraid to engage with black art.

i kinda get annoyed when non black people police other non blacks on how to engage with black culture because it creates a problem where non black people avoid us all together which can be extremely isolating and create even MORE tension and overall being uneducated.
