Just the thought of it tingled pleasantly down his spine. Beneath it ran that chill which threaded through his marrow. The winter had passed. But—was he terrible? He just couldn’t forget it.
The road, the past, and the cage of circumstance. Custas & Dagda, pre-canon. 2.8k. Written for @growingpainswha.
i dont want to nostalgiapost abt sgdlr because. gestures vaguely at the endless nuance and discourse about it. and its not like this has totally disappeared from the show. but sometimes i do really miss s1 & the way it grasps at the present…like maybe everything is terrible and nothing can change. maybe the past is gone and the future is terrifying and unknown. but you still have this moment. and you still have people who care for you and are reaching for you right now & want you to be well. regardless of past and regardless of future. etc.
you have to be careful reading too many things that are good/smart/well-written bc then you encounter something that isnt and you get confused like ? why didnt they just make this good ? were they stupid

I like when people tag witch hat atelier stuff with "#wha" because it looks like they're just gently befuddled by fanart or whatever

oftentimes two guys who want to fuck each other not fucking each other is hotter than if they fucked each other
thought about rbing the original post but im chickenshit and it sort of hits the mark, my grasp of romance as a genre is generally weaker than other genres, and anyway im basically just being pedantic about a few points so whatever #vaguenation. regardless i think its too sweeping of a statement to suggest that the #1 qualifier of romance is a happy ever after (hereafter HEA), and all else is literary fiction, and ignores a lot of the historical nuance.
its true that the HEA was a major component of the modern romance genre - probably the most important & defining pulp of the genre, love story magazine (1921-1947), did hardcode it in as a requirement, and that's certainly very strongly influenced the field and how we view genre markings now. but jan radway has this really interesting note that a lot of romance readers (at least in the 80s, when she was doing her fieldwork) used romance as escapism - a term which is casually thrown around a lot, but here she specifically means that under the increasing pressures and isolations of home life and the growing suburban lifestyle, the act of reading allowed housewives to 1) have a private moment to themselves, outside of their household responsibilities and 2) fulfill their own emotional needs. i imagine you can surmise why a tragic ending might not be as appealing in this case. though im admittedly less versed in how modern day readers view it, i think there is most likely a similar connection.
and of course, the contemporary genre scene is somewhat different to 20th century conceptions, but i feel it is somewhat reductive to suggest that genre is totally and clearly defined by one specific component. i think genre categories are not totally clearly marked like that, and anyway all genre categories - including that of literary fiction - have kind of a weird relationship with marketing and popular notions and whatnot. however, i feel that contemporary romance - especially post booktok influence - skews very strongly towards a prosaic accessibility, which is somewhat at odds with what we conceive of as literary fiction. and anyway, on a more subjective level, even if one or both main characters died at the end, i would not necessarily view acotar or fourth wing or even like. emily henry’s stuff as works of literary fiction, or indeed as anything other than works of contemporary romance.
anyone ever think about shirahama saying coco was designed to be your best friend and go insane
