I would like to commission the base individual feathers for my mother. She is making an Arakacra cosplay but has no time to actually cut the base feathers. What would it cost for base feathers no details?

*googles Arakacra* As in the DnD race of bipedal back-winged bird folk, Aarakocra?

You may not need to commission me to make it, since the art I see in search results is based on many types of birds, you may be fine using the Corvid/Crow wing shapes I already made available via DeviantArt (if you like their wingshape) - download and print the PDF to get the paper pattern, or cut it out of cardboard for a sturdier tracing surface.

Started work on the wings portion of the fursuit project. K’rahmyteh has smallish, stubby wings akin to a kakapo. These feathers were designed via a combination of sketching out a full sized wing using a photoshoped me with kakapo wings, sketching out the individual feathers, then modifying #SunnybrookOne’s raven wing feather pattern to match my sketches.

I have no idea when there will next be an update on this as those feathers will take FOREVER to sculpt!

Where have I been, you might well ask. The answer: completely and utterly submerged in learning how to put together a costume. I’ve never tried to make costumes or props before, so I had a lot of learning to do in the last 3 months. The end result can be seen above. I found this pic on Instagram, and being picked out of the crowd at the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball as someone’s favorite is literally a dream come true.

Guys. It was SO. MUCH. FUN. I got to interact with a cast of forest spirits, elves, fairies and elementals. I got to waddle around the history-soaked halls of the Los Angeles Biltmore hotel, my epoxy talons clickety-clacking on the marble tile. I got to spread my wings on the dance floor in the grand ballroom and shake my tail feathers to Dead Man’s Party by Oingo Boingo with @emptymanuscript. I honestly can’t put into words how amazing an experience the weekend was. And it was all thanks to the help of following folks:

Always, @emptymanuscript who is endlessly supportive, encouraging, and patient, even when I have covered every inch of our apartment with feathers, wall paint, and hot glue.

@sunnybrook1 who took the time and effort to create a detailed tutorial on how to make her realistic and articulated wings - I learned SO MUCH building my wings, and spreading them out in a public place for the first time was an experience I can’t even describe.

@rah-bop who also generously created tutorials that I used to make clawed gloves and bird feet. I had people coming up asking to take pictures of just my feet, which is an experience I have certainly never had before. And the click-clack of my claws on the floor turned a lot of heads ^_^

@bueshang who makes the raddest bird skull mask ever and helped me intimidate and fascinate people by turns

@dressartmystery who made my dress with the patience of a saint and who’s creations helped inspire the earliest seeds of this costume

Metamorph Quirky Couture who made my bird girl’s “hair” and custom altered her headdress for me so it hid my entire head.

A PTP Observation

Pre-TP: I can scroll for hours and just barely see everything in my feed. Draining, but like a miner sifting for gold I can usually find a few shiny nuggets I like.

Post-TP: only takes 20-30 seconds tops to see my whole feed, and I realize just how much I’ve been missing grinding through so much content before. The silly asks and shares, the fun back and forth between other users. Makes me realize I was subscribed to way more people than I should’ve been.

I can only enjoy so much of the cool stuff that other people share before it all starts to blur together & I’m unable to truly enjoy or appreciate it. I’m sad that it took so many folks getting pushed out to realize it, though. :(

Wow! Finally posting some pictures of my wings. Sorry about the quality in some of these, I haven’t had time to do a nice photoshoot yet!

For some more info:

-My wingspan in these is about 10 feet

-The wings are spring loaded to open and pull shut to close

-They weigh abouuut 6 pounds I’d guess (I can hold them up with one hand)

-Every feather is hand cut and hand glued. I did the painting and detailing with an airbrush

-The frame is made of PVC pipes, the nuts and bolts are made of nylon, and the feathers are cut from underlayment foam to make everything ultra light weight

It's my first time cosplaying, but I really want to do it for this one event. The problem is, I don't know who to cosplay as. My physique makes it difficult for certain ones and the one I want specifically doesn't exist on the market and not a lot of people know of him. I'm seriously asking for a guide to help me.

Physique: You can always make alterations to a design to better fit your body type or comfort level. I don’t know what in particular is stopping you from choosing certain characters but if it is really restricting your choices, it might be better to find a workaround.

Unknown Characters: I cosplay a lot of characters that people don’t really know. Generally you get less pictures get taken and you get mistaken for a lot of other characters but when someone does recognize you, it’s a pretty awesome moment. If you want to cosplay as a little-known character then you can always make the costume yourself or commission one to be custom made.

As for choosing a character, there is no specific guide to deciding. Although I put together this flowchart to help with “should I cosplay it” decisions:

I can give you some advice for choosing a costume though:

Write down a list of characters and series that you love. Just anything that you are passionate about. Review the list, is there any character that REALLY stands out for you?

If you can’t think of anything, pick up a new series or game or look at something you loved years ago.

If you still can’t think of anything, check out your convention’s community (facebook groups/events, forums, instagram tags) and see what other people are cosplaying. It might give you inspiration or remind you of characters/series that you enjoyed and would like to cosplay.

If you can’t think of anything new, but have cosplayed before, consider updating an older costume.

Cosplay Tutorial: How to Create Worbla Feathers

By popular request: it’s the worbla feather tutorial!!

For Tsukki’s Legend of Karasuno cosplay, I decided to go with a heavy crow motif, and what better way to do that than covering myself in feather armor? I ended up crafting close to 100 in total between the shield, gauntlet, and pauldrons, using a few different tweaks for different armor pieces. However all of my feathers were made in one of two ways: either by sandwiching worbla around foam for a very thick, large feather, or by stacking two pieces of worbla for a thinner but very sturdy feather that is thick enough to etch deep details into. Read on for these two methods!
