Kickin’ off the new year with some b i g n e w s ! I received this a while ago, but I’ve been sharing the news with family over the holidays. While I still have another interview to attend, I HAVE OFFICIALLY RECEIVED MY FIRST ACCEPTANCE. No matter the result of the next interview, I will be going to medical school. I’ve loved KCU for a long time now, because I’ve met so many incredible DOs that rave about their education. Tips on getting motivation back?

MOTIVATION IS A MYTH AND WILL NOT GET YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.

Practice discipline and dedication. Know what you want and be willing to put in the work, even if you hate it.

Relying on motivation will leave your ass on the couch watching Netflix for 5 hours because you “don’t feel like studying/exercising/working” but dedication will tell you “bitch, get it together and get going!”

Unique chorus gives voice to people with Alzheimer's

The Giving Voice Chorus is made up of people with Alzheimer's and their caregiving partners or spouses

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The singers of the Giving Voice chorus know the heartbreak of fading memories. From soprano to bass, they are people with Alzheimer’s and their caregiving partners or spouses.

“It’s very, very good for getting my brain working,” said Michael Brodie, who was diagnosed three years ago at age 79.

He’s been married to his wife Jane for 45 years. He says there’s something about the music that helps.

“I have no idea how all that works,” he said. “I just am really glad that it’s there.”

This is the group’s most daunting project to date: learning nine original songs – commissioned by the chorus and performed this summer in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“We both thought, ‘Oh my lord, how are we gonna learn all this?’ We’ve never heard it before,” said Jane. “But we both have grown to really love the music.”

Composer Victor Zupanc and poet Louisa Castner wrote the pieces with some help.  "In every single song we can point to the line or an image that came from them,“ said Castner.

“They keep pulling us aside and saying, ‘You– you’ve given us a voice,’” Zupanc said.The haunting “Ballad of the Dinghy” was inspired by caregiver Janet Labrecque. The chorus, for her, is a safe harbor.

“It really sums up the whole experience, of both the stormy days, uncertainty, but yet the kind of bedrock of friendship and family, and somehow knowing it’s going to be alright,” she said.

I remember the first time I felt self conscious about the size of my body. I was in third grade when I noticed that my thighs were bigger than other girls’. I was in fourth grade when I realized my tummy was bigger too. I wasn’t obese, but I noticed that I was heavier than many of my peers. I try not to think about those things anymore, because as they say, comparison is the thief of joy. Anyway, here’s to a lifestyle change that sticks. I’m so proud of them, but I wish I was there with them. I didn’t give myself the chance to join them last cycle by not submitting my application, because I knew I wanted to be a better and more qualified candidate than I was. The past few days I’ve been packing and then moving to my new home. Instead of continuing my cleaning and unpacking, I have spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos and coloring.
