James once notices that the Map behaves differently depending on proximity.

When Sirius and Remus are apart (say, Sirius is in detention and Remus is in the library) their dots on the map are faint. The ink is gray and wispy. Their footsteps on the paper are sluggish. It looks like they are fading out of existence.

But the moment they start walking toward each other, the ink darkens.

As they get closer in the corridor, the footsteps on the map become bold, black, and definitive.

When they finally meet and their dots touch, the ink practically glows.

James realizes the Map is measuring vitality.

It’s not just showing where they are. It’s showing that they are only half-alive when they are separated. They only become fully real, fully present, and fully there when they are together.

James closes the map, feeling like he’s intruding on something sacred. He never tells them.

Barty needs glasses for reading, but he absolutely refuses to wear them. He thinks he looks ridiculous, and is so embarrassed about wearing them.

He never has them on during classes, so he ends up squinting at the board even though he's sitting in the first row. The only time he ever wears them, is when he's studying alone or when his head hurts too much.

Evan once walks in on Barty wearing them and is absolutely shocked to see Barty wear glasses. Safe to say, Barty's seen with them more after that.

Though he still refuses to take them to his classes, claiming they make him look uncool.
