[Comic] Akari & Pikachu’s Birthday

“How I Became a Pokemon Card” or “Pokemon Card ni Natta Wake” was a manga released in six volumes between 1999 and 2001. Kagemaru Himeno wrote and illustrated each chapter, which told the story around or behind the scenario seen in a particular Pokemon card (she also illustrated all of the cards featured in each chapter).

Chapter 38, or “The Final Chapter”, appears at the end of volume 6 and tells the story behind the famous Japan-exclusive “Birthday Pikachu” or “_______’s Pikachu” card. This story (relevant for this Pride Month release) is about Akari, a transmasculine child who is struggling with expectations and appearances. It’s perhaps a little wishy-washy about affirming his identity, but it’s still nice to see this kind of gender representation in children’s media. There’s lots of bold, dramatic panels in this brief story, and some lovely art on Himeno’s part.

Scelus of the Manga-Tube group scanned this volume, and agreed to provide me with the scans so I could create an English scanlation. Horseypope translated the Japanese script, and I did all the cleaning, editing, typesetting, etc. I’m happy with how it turned out, and thankful to my friends whose perspectives I sought on the nuances of Akari’s character.

This manga series is one of my favourites, as it tells smaller, diverse one-off stories in the Pokemon world that are outside the ordinary “Trainer’s journey” narrative. It’s not the only manga that does this but I think Himeno does a great job with these, and I’m very pleased to bring this one to an English-language audience. Please enjoy and share it.

I’ve been thinking about my grandma more lately because the one year anniversary of her death is in 11 days and I wish I said goodbye to her the day they took her to the hospice where she died not even 4 hours later, I wish I had spent more time with her, I wish I went into the room to see her one more time.

What I wouldn’t give for just a single hour to see her again and just talk, talk about the new Pokemon game she would watch me play, talk about her friends and what they’re doing, talk about music, just talking about anything would be fine I just want her back

But she isn’t coming back, and I have to live with that. But, she gave me the bunny toy that was passed down from her husbands grandad, to her husband and then her, and now me.

His name is wabbit and he means a lot to me

15 - Favourite shiny

Ohh there’s so many that I love, I’m partial towards Blue, Pink and Yellow shinies along with shinies with references but at the moment it’s between Jangmo-o and Diancie !! I’m a sucker for the heart on Jangmo-o’s head turning pink

And Diancie because . . . Have you seen her ? She is gorgeous no matter what

16 - Least Favourite Shiny

Volcanion . Doesn’t really make sense because it fits my criteria of Yellow, Blue and Pink shinies, heck it has all of those colours !! But for this shiny, it just doesn’t work for me and it doesn’t help with Volcanion probably being my least favourite Pokemon overall

I’ve been having thoughts of a touch starved astral who is also coping with being physically invisible (it was inevitable)

This takes place I think pre number siblings but post Zexal morph’s first introduction. So maybe around episode 30 ish?

Also this isn’t intended as keyshipping but you may interpret this as you wish

It was pretty late at night. Yuma was in up in his room sleeping in his hammock, snoring rather loudly. Trinkets and treasures were all over the place. Yuma claimed to know where everything was in the room, but this claim has yet to be proven true. Dispite the disorganized clutter, the room had a very comfy vibe. There is a certain feeling you get when you’re surrounded by history. It’s a special one of curiosity. And to Yuma, it’s peaceful too, because they represent a different history to him. The history he had with his parents.

Laying on the floor of this room was the “walking flashlight” known as astral. I say “laying on the floor” but it’s a bit hard to lay when you’re incorporeal. He was watching the sparrow on Yuma’s little box tv. Astral knows nothing on the show is real. He learned that. He knows that the sparrow can’t help him find his way home, but there’s still something comforting about this show. And it feels nice knowing he’s supporting his friend Nelson in a way. Are they friends if they haven’t talked? And if one doesn’t know the other exists? Astral isn’t sure but he feels like they’re friends. No harm in that, right? He calls Nelson Yuma’s friend, just to be safe. The show is also nice because astral can’t really sleep. He doesn’t feel the need to, dispite feeling tired sometimes. He watches the sparrow when he doesn’t feel like pondering his past anymore. You can only wonder for so long before you get sick of it.

Astral’s body doesn’t feel real to him. Well it does but doesn’t. He can feel it if he touches his own arm. But he can tell something is missing. He feels incomplete. Hollow. Doesn’t help that he phases through everything he touches. Sure he doesn’t fly through walls, but that’s because he often forgets he can. He tries not to touch much, to feign a bit of normalcy in this condition. Is it normal for him? Was he always incorporeal? Astral doesn’t think that’s true. He doesn’t want it to be true.

Astral doesn’t like how he can phase through things. He doesn’t remember what it feels like to touch something either. Well he becomes physical when he is inside the key. But everything there feels cold. It’s all metal and stone. There’s no life. Astral’s been in that key enough to know that metal. He’s sick of it.

Astral is curious about what other things feel like. What does a carpet feel like? That’s one he’s been oddly curious about. The tsukumos have a rug that looks nice to touch. He’s wanted to try touching it for a while, but he just phases through. He wants to know texture. What about this so called “sand paper”? He hears it get referenced sometimes in conversation. People say it feels rough. What kind of rough?

And temperature too. The temperature feels hazy to astral. Is hazy the right word? Maybe. Maybe not. He can’t define it really. Everything is cold for him. Warm is just less cold, but not warm. What is warm? How does the sun feel compared to a heater? Do they feel the same? Or different? Astral recalls the feeling of how he and Yuma fused with the power of Zexal. That felt different. He didn’t feel cold then. He could feel Yuma’s heat. Was that heat? It certainly wasn’t cold. Astral thinks it’s heat. Is heat the same as warm? He wonders if that probably heat is what the sun feels like. Astral likes to think it is. He would like to feel it again, to confirm it’s its really heat. Does Yuma always feel like that?

And what about how living things feel? Plants. Animals. People. What do humans feel like? Astral hates to admit that he feels jealous of his friends being able to feel everything. It sometimes hurts when he watches them high five eachother. Does their skin feel like his? His skin feels glossy and chilled. Is glossy right? It’s smooth, like the metal but even more so. What is glossy? Whatever it is, astral feels it’s an accurate description. Do people feel that way? Does Yuma feel that way?

Astral ponders this while the sparrow gives a speech in the background. Astral was supposed to be relaxing. Why is he asking questions now? But dispite trying to focus back on the show, his brain won’t let him. He starts looking around the room. All the artifacts and pieces of history. They all appear to have different textures, but do they? Does that mask feel different than that one? Does that pot feel like the same cold stone he’s used to? Or can stone feel warm? Does the air have a feeling? A texture? Yuma sometimes complains the air feels “sticky and hot”. Does it not normally feel that way? The molecules all pass through him. He doesn’t know.

Then astral’s eyes take him to Yuma, still sound asleep and snoring. He occasionally mumbles something in his sleep. It’s an incoherent garble of noise. Astral floats over to him and hovers above him. Astral is plagued by curiosity. Maybe it’s those treasures wearing off on him. Except he isn’t curious about the past right now. Rather the present plagues him. Astral sticks his hand out. He hovers it over Yuma’s shoulder.

He thinks a moment before lowering his hand, attempting to rest it on Yuma, but it just goes through him as it has a 1,000 time before. An odd numbness engulfs his hand as he lets it sit inside the shoulder for a moment. Astral hates that this numbness is familiar. It’s too familiar. He feels it every time he touches anything. It feels… scratchy? No astral doesn’t think that’s the right word. Rough? That’s not it either. He remembers the feeling he got when he heard tv static for the first time. Yeah. It’s like that. Astral doesn’t know texture but he knows sound. Sound can be a texture right? Maybe. For once the cold leaves him. His hand isn’t warm resting in Yuma’s shoulder, at least astral doesn’t think this classifies as warm, but what does he know? it’s definitely not cold though. A nebulous temperature, he decides.

astral leaves his hand there for a moment, contemplating the feeling, before retracting it. Yuma remains fast asleep. The night proceeds as if nothing happened.

A little note for how it feels for astral when he phases through stuff. You know when your hands are super cold and you put them under really hot water to heat them up? You know that numb kind of feeling that is In between cold and hot because your hand is trying to adjust to the rapidly changing temperature? That’s what I think it feels like when astral is phasing through something. But since he never got to feel that, he couldn’t explain it in the fic. I actually really like that feeling so I wanted to use it with astral bc it felt accurate. He doesn’t really like that feeling tho :P

I was thinking of zombies cuz of a show i was watching, but now im thinking of sylveon cuz i saw your pfp while looking around on here so do you have a show you like that you dont see many people talk about?

One that immediately comes to my mind(especially with the mention of zombies hehe) is Gakkou Gurashi/School Live ! ! !

I went into it completely blind and got my heart broke in so many different ways

I hear zero conversations about it and that’s a genuine shame because it’s one of the best Anime I’ve watched ! I majorly recommend it if you have a way to access it, it’s relatively short with like 12 episodes so you could probably watch it all in like a few days ! It is best to go in to it completely blind if possible

I wish there was a second season because even though they follow slightly different paths, the manga has enough content to justify a new season (and the last episode literally ends with a MYSTERY CHARACTER🙁) but the anime came out in 2015 so the chances of a second season is nearly zero :((
