Harris do his best as always
i tried making a contrapuntal poem for hollanov, which can be read 3 ways: shane’s side alone, ilya’s side alone, or both sides together. inspired by the long game.
Y'all arent ready for the hollanov crack treated seriously fic ive been concocting
Thinking about Ilya Rozanov wanting to make Ottawa into a home, so he spends a few weeks just being out in the community by himself. He goes to the animal shelter and ends up walking some dogs. He goes to eat at as many restaurants he can find and talks to people there. He checks out the library and signs up for a library card that he doesn't have any plans to really use. He goes to museums and judges things he doesn't really get. He visits some local sport shops and judges what brands of hockey gear they supply. He checks out every nearby grocery store so he figures out which ones he likes the best even though he'll order his groceries more often than not. He befriends old ladies everywhere he goes and they want to dote on him because he flirts with them and they get a kick out of it.
Hollanov zombie apocalypse AUs have quickly become my favorite genre of Hollanov fic. I love seeing what people do with them and what point in the Game Changers timeline people start the outbreak. Obsessed!! Made me write a 5000 word outline on a potential multichapter apocalypse fic for myself!
I'm sure someone has written this before, but I've been spinning this AU around in my head where Irina got help for her depression, but Yuna passed away from a physical illness when Shane was twelve and how that would reflect on Shane and Ilya's characters throughout the series.
Like. Shane wouldn't have the same pressures on him because he wouldn't have had someone who acknowledged they existed. He wouldn't do as many sponsorships, and he would probably take only companies he truly believed in. But also, he has to live with the weight of his mom passing. He feels disconnected from his Japanese identity, and his dad doesn't quite understand it in the way Yuna would. At every hockey event, he misses her.
Ilya would perhaps be out as bisexual to his team pretty immediately. I think it would be a thing where they saw him take a guy back to his hotel room, and Boston is relatively chill about it, and Ilya is a good enough player for them to not think about it too hard. In my head, Irina escaped with Ilya to the U.S. after Ilya is caught with Sasha, and while she doesn't completely understand, she is supportive and loves her son. I imagine he and his mom are neighbors in Boston because he bought the house right next door to hers. He lies to her about sending money home because he feels guilty for leaving his father dying with Alexei, but it's ugly and complicated because he remembers what they did to her. He tries to hide his depressive symptoms from his mom because he doesn't want to burden her more or make her feel guilty that he probably inhertied this from her. He goes to therapy at his mom's insistence, but he isn't always honest with his mom or his therapist. He likes to talk to his mom about Shane.
I have thoughts on Irina and David too ofc.
Irina, to me, was very quickly befriended by some older ladies that love quilting after finding a job at a fabric and craft store. She also quickly gets to know the people who work at the closest Russian grocery store, and she spends a few weeks looking for a church she likes that also accepts her queer son. She attends weekly. She's going to therapy and on medication, and she's desperately trying to find an answer for it just in case she handed it off to Ilya. She is a bit overbearing in an almost smothering way when she has the energy for it. But there are days that Ilya takes her food in bed, and she feels so endlessly guilty and embarrassed about it in a way she struggles to articulate.
David is trying his best :(( He loves Yuna so much and he doesn't want to leave the home they built together, so he encourages Shane to go on without him. He's still very supportive of Shane, but he's always been a little more relaxed than Yuna. His support is showing up to events with Shane when he's younger, but as the years go on, he only goes if Shane explicitly asks that of him. He's friends with the people at his office, and he joins and crushes it in his companies bowling team or smth. He loves bragging about his son, and he manages to still brag about marrying Yuna despite her having passed a long time ago. He isn't really all that interested in being with anyone else. He's dated a little bit after several years, but he hasn't been able to find anyone who has made him feel right and happy in the way Yuna did. He reckons he never will.
I've been going through the HR timeline and reimagining how Hollanov's relationship would change based on this, too. Idk. Theres a running document. Probably wont write a fic with it. But its fun to think about!
shanebug photo album circa '91-93
The night before Shane might win his third Stanley cup, Ilya sends him the clip of his Stanley cup win.
Confused, Shane immediately calls him.
"Is this some new and unique way to psych me out before the final, Rozanov? I didn't know you had money on Detroit."
"No, I am sending for a good reason," Ilya laughs. "I know it sucks for us that when you win all your team will be kissing their girlfriends and Pike will be making out all gross with Jackie, and we will not be able to. So, I wanted to show you exactly where I first kissed the cup. It was on the top, right over where it says Ottawa 1905, left of where it says 'Challenge Cup'. I remember because I did this on purpose. We weren't anything then, but I was thinking of you. I couldn't help thinking of you. So if you kiss the same place, it will be a little like we are sharing a kiss. And only we will know about it."
And Shane feels the air clean knocked out of his lungs and the back of his throat get tight, as he barely gets out, "Baby, that's... Thank you. I don't know what to say. I love you so fucking much. I'll make sure you see our kiss, okay?"
"I will be watching. I love you, My Shane. Go show the world why Shane Fucking Hollander is the goat, okay?"
On the night Shane wins his third Stanley Cup, he kisses their spot on the cup, thinking only of Ilya, and longs for a day where he can pull him onto the ice like Scott did with Kip.
On the night Shane wins his fourth Stanley cup, he hoists the cup into the air with his captain, they both kiss the same spot on the trophy, and then in front of the world, on his home ice, Shane Hollander kisses his husband, and it feels like a promise fulfilled.
I think sometimes Ilya looks at his hands and tries to figure out how Irina's would fit in them.
He can remember her clasping his fingers in her own to pull him along when they were in large crowds or crossing the street. She'd squeeze sometimes and he'd wonder if she thought he was anxious and was trying to reassure him, or maybe she was feeling it and wanted something to cling to.
He can almost remember the sensation, though it's put together a little too logically now, cursed by conscious memory; where one is forced to acknowledge that nothing in their mind is a photograph or a full scene, preserved in clarity. It's a thousand tiny, diminishing and fading details, slotted together like an imperfect puzzle, always losing pieces.
He reminds himself that her hands were always cold, even before. In a different way, a breathing way, less scaly and distressing than they were after. Soft. But cold, yes. He tries not to let the after overshadow the before, and even so, it twists and taints his reminiscence.
He knows that her fingers were long and slender. How long, he couldn't say. Is it insane to wish for measurements? Some unalterable, unquestionable representation of what used to be. Wishing doesn't help now. It never has.
He thinks that when she was doing better her nails were neat and short, and when she was doing worse her thumbs were slightly ragged from nibbling and would grow longer before she could remember to tame them again. But maybe that's a fabrication. He can't ask her, or anyone else, to confirm.
The feelings he associates with it, he knows, are wrong. He didn't think about it then, or was vaguely annoyed. There was no absence to make him nostalgic for the contact. The sweetness and sorrow are new, painted over reality by a wistful, older version of himself.
Between the inconsistency of recollection and the imperfection of imagination, Ilya can't quite figure out how they'd fit. His hands were so much smaller then. They've kept growing, gaining more callouses, scars and bumps, becoming rougher. In a way they're a representation of all of him; he has changed so wholly from the boy she knew.
If Irina had lived, hers would probably be different too, now, wouldn't they? Perhaps not drastically, but surely at least a little. And isn't that some of the horror of it; that she is frozen as she was, unable to be anything more than she was, and the frost is obscuring her details with time. Everything is becoming fuzzy, indistinct, and so, so painfully frigid.
He doesn't get to know who she would have been. She doesn't get to know who he is.
At some point, the futility of it all strikes him. Ilya Rozanov, as he is, is irrevocably contextualized by the loss of his mother. Irina Rozanova, as she was, never knew an Ilya shadowed by that grief. The bones remain but are different now, the skin completely renewed, his physical tethers to that boy and his mother's touch diminishing. Their hands, as his are and hers were, will never fit. The closest he's ever been able to come is grasping at empty air, desperate to hold on to a memory.
shane is so brave making big steps to pursue ilya in HR yes. but he is even more brave in TLG i think because he is even more scared than he was before. putting his hand on ilya’s back in the club gets me every time. standing up against crowell. MUST I REMIND YOU he initiated their first date in public getting chicken parm. he wanted to be out just as bad as ilya and he was so so scared and he was so so brave
As much as I love Shane not knowing when people are hitting on him, i feel like he's gotta have at least a bit of awareness because like. He knew all of the "right" steps to go through with Rose. Personally, #myshane knows the general script of flirting and hookups and stuff and is generally comfortable with the idea of flirting with someone he is comfortable talking to (Rose). but he doesn't always catch on when its not something he's heard before, and he gets far more flustered with the idea when he actually has stakes in it and is attracted to who is flirting with him (Ilya)
Idk though 😭😭
