Once I'm done with Theater AU (putting the HR characters in a setting I'm familiar with so I can actually write about it, but somehow still roping myself into writing several explicit scenes for character accuracy and exploration reasons) I think I will have to write an Asexual AU (putting the characters back into hockey which idk fuck about but I don't have to write any explicit scenes because Shane and Ilya just really like meeting up after they play on the ice and getting hyper competitive over card games or something)

First handshake and Ilya notices a suspiciously deck shaped outline in Shane's pocket. Finally, he thinks, a worthy opponent, and in more than just hockey. Shane subconsciously sought him out for hockey reasons but also because from afar the cigarette pack looks kinda like a box of cards.

CCM shoot. Before they even reach the showers Ilya notices Shane checking out his back pocket and asexually (because I cannot describe any of his actions as sexy/sexily anymore, those are the rules /j) pulls out the deck and starts very expertly shuffling it. Shane is briefly entranced before insisting "not here" (They are sweaty and still need to shower. The cards could get wet. Ew.)

They've modified Skipbo like my cousin and I do so they both start out with a massive pile to get rid of and the discards go up or down, top card duplicates are wild, etc etc anything to make the game more exciting. Shane's used to playing by the rules but not with Ilya. With Ilya it's a whole other game. Also one time Ilya managed to get rid of his whole deck in his first turn, before Shane could play a single card, and it was "such a good trick" and they both know that was absolutely dumb luck but "You don't get it Hollander, I just have better strategy. The cards love me."

Shane tried really hard to play with Rose but she always wanted to play Candyland. Which is an insulting application of cards, bastardizing them into a juvenile board game with no strategy involved. She recognizes quickly that his heart's not in it and suggests her good friend Miles, who has been playing solitaire for far too long, but Shane only wants one specific man to be his partner (in 500)

1775-1819 In 1775, most of the United States was still Indigenous land; however, even George Washington acknowledged that it would require a “great wall” to restrain European settlers from encroaching on Indigenous territory. Over 200 years of land transfers (in which lands previously inhabited by Indigenous people became official property of non-Indigenous people), the Indigenous population was gradually confined to small areas within the U.S.

1820-1864 By 1820, settlers had moved well into the Midwest, displacing Indigenous inhabitants through conflict or the simple pressure of their presence. "crochet can't be made by machines" went from being a cool fun fact to being a call to action of "so if you see mass manufactured crochet in Target, that was made by a person and they were underpaid and you should boycott it" which is true, it was made by a person, but EVERY item of clothing you own (that you did not purchase from a company using ethical labor) was made by a person being underpaid (at *best*.)

Sewing machines are operated by *people*. Knitting machines are operated by *people*. Yes lots of the process is automated but you cannot tell a machine "make me a t-shirt" or "make me a knit cardigan".

Higher awareness of fast fashion, and the true human labor and abuse behind it, is GREAT, but let's not pretend that the crochet hat in target is THE problem. Every article of clothing in target is the problem. "All clothes are made by people" is the jumping off point here into understanding this issue it's not just crochet it's the whole thing ahhhhHHHHHHHHHH

Fifth chapter of HR Theater AU is up and I figured I should post some of my old sewing projects alongside it, since I mention them in the notes. Not too glowingly.

I sewed these when I was thirteen. I'd had a class with my friend's mom where we learned to backstitch by hand, did some small projects, used patterns to make a skirt for a doll, then one for a person... and then the class was over and I just started bullshitting. As I do.

I was impatient as hell, so the hems (if they had any) and one specific seam were held by the running stitch... yikes. Worse, I tried to finish off some edges with hot glue.

(anyways here's a bunch of screenshots from some long ass videos I need to at some point edit down to concisely explain my issues/appreciations with each, and one photo from when I was 13, because ofc my favorite of the collection is the one that I can't even pretend fits me now lmao)

I think it's actually very lovely to look back on what I used to do. They weren't perfect, most were downright bad, but there was an idea there, a foundation to build on. There was passion. They were the necessary first steps to being able to sew like I do now. I've had a long learning curve for all my interests. Most things I do I do with little assistance or instruction, just fucking around and finding out. Sometimes I find out the bad way. Sometimes I put hot glue on hems and then put them in the dryer. But then, years down the line, because I was too damn stubborn to give up after fucking up that bad, I got to make ball gowns and wolf costumes and prince coats, and I got to see them on my friends and/or under stage lights.

In short? If you love something, it's ok to fuck it up a lot. It's ok to take years to get good. It's ok to look back and realize you weren't that good, because it means you've gotten better.

I have a lot more to improve on, always more to learn. I'm excited for that.

Not only is it not weird, it is ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED. Authors LOVE IT when people do this!!! Its not "weird" and its not "neutral" -- its a fucking DELIGHT. Feel very absolutely free to read though an author's entire back catalogue, leaving kudos and/or comments along the way; we absolutely freaking love when someone does this. There is nothing more joyful than getting a comment notification for an old fic. It will make our day, I promise.

Children's cartoons are full of the power of friendship, but as soon as you get to media for teens or adults it's all about "true love" which is almost exclusively used to refer to romantic love. Children's media focuses on friendship and holds it up as a deep and valuable bond, but once romance is involved friendship is relegated to a nice side garnish if it's acknowledged at all. And as soon as the target audience is old enough to be interested in romance it's nearly impossible to find any stories without it as at least a subplot.

When someone starts dating it's not only normalized but near-universally expected that they'll put their friends second to their partner, regardless of the length or depth of the respective relationships. The "friendzone" is where you hang out when you're hoping for a "real relationship." When there's a romantic or sexual aspect they're "more than friends."
