Such a beautiful and mysterious creation, blooming in early spring when snow still falls, the sky still gloomy and gray, the air around still cutting if at all agitated.
Such beauty in the midst of darkness, a glimmer of hope and promise nestled in a dreary landscape still grasping for life after months in the underworld.
Still yet, all the beauty of the hellebore cannot be seen by plain view. Still attractive on the surface, but yet it hides so much underneath it’s verdant visage. It’s hopeful blooms tucked away behind the dense foliage that protects it from the cold, from harm, the harshness of life.
It’s beauty must be carefully and delicately sought. Each dark leaf of seasons past must be gently pruned away revealing the life and charm and allure of its flower, where all it’s personality and gifts lie. Every vulnerable petal that seeks kind waters and the warm embrace of the returning sun.. to be touched ever so lovingly by the honey bee that keeps coming back, the bee that stays, and tells all the other flowers about you.
About how you were the first flower to bring it hope after such a long winter. About how resilient you’ve been to have endured such tumultuous weather only to still be growing, blooming year after year, roots still firmly planted because there’s work yet to do.
Hellebores take work, patience, understanding, but when cared for.. when loved, and loved well, they spread like wildfire. They will traverse untold distances if they’re allowed to thrive, when the soil has all they need to experience the fullness of themselves.
Still, they hide their flowers behind dense foliage they’ve created to protect them. A necessity for surviving the hard times, lest they languish in solitude.. but they will only begin to flourish when that foliage is gently and diligently removed leaf by leaf, year after year.
While they wish to do it on their own, the hellebore will only reveal its full glory when someone dares to reach in and take those leaves in their hand. The end of its stem in one hand and in the other the scissors of honest intentions, sharpened through trial, and say to it:
“You’re safe.. let me see you.
I know it’s scary to let this stuff go, it might even hurt a little at first, but what’s underneath all of this is worth it.
Just imagine how much you’ll grow when you’re able to finally breathe in.
