“I am so sorry-” she stammered, gathering her skirt in an effort to escape what was devolving into a humiliating evening as fast as humanly possible. Would Alex forgive her if she just walked home? Surely he would just figure it out eventually and head back to the castle-

“Oh, ah, I’m Luke.  Wanna dance?” He smiled, hand extended, as if she’d just elegantly introduced herself instead of nearly plowing him over. 

“Julie,” she replied without a second thought, eyes wide, “and yes. Um. Yes. I’d love to get away from whatever embarrassment I just brought myself.” 

Luke’s face slid from a pristine smile to a pout. “So I’m just a distraction, then?” 

“No, no, no-” you’reperfectandiwouldspendathousandballsgazingntoyoureyesificould her brain professed frantically, though thankfully, she refrained from telling him that. “I do want to dance with you. I promise, I do.” 

The statement hung heavy in the air between them as their gazes met for the first time. His eyes were a color that she’d never seen - an intense hazel that complimented his dark hair that was ruffled from the activity of the evening. He was richly dressed, rivaling Nick’s attire; his eveningwear was accented with a handsome crimson vest, embroidered with patterns of gold thread.  He wore no jacket, and with the way his arms were accented by the fit of his white dress shirt, Julie was quite grateful for the unconventional choice. 

She could feel her cheeks warming.  Maybe stop looking at his arms, Julie.

ok hi so i have been obsessed with snow by ricky montgomery since ali @sunsetswerv told me she thought california was a juke song and i’ve decided that snow is a luke and emily patterson song

“to me evergreen wasn’t such a bad dream and sometimes things aren’t as plain as they seem” there must have been something beyond his parents mindlessly hating him going into music. luke had a dream and passion and drive and they were so very against it and for what? they must have worried about something. he didn’t think they weren’t bad parents, he loved them so much and regretted leaving them

“wasting our chances for the last time,” having that terrible fight only months before he dies. “let’s not lose ourselves.”

“summer’s over, love had left her screaming at the screen.” rock musicians in the nineties did not have a good reputation, especially among worried parents who lived in la and saw them on the news every day. a summer spent throwing himself into his music only escalates things.

i see this as something like unsaid emily so from luke’s pov so “short little gloat always clearing his throat like he ever had something to say” is luke blaming himself for the endless fighting

“take my mind, take my body, take my father’s conscience from me. sister, will you lend me all your strength? i’m bringing everyone home.” he wants to fix this so, so, badly. he wants to go home. wrt “take my father’s conscience from me” i see mitch’s face when he got out of the car to see luke biking away down the street, when he held his crying wife time and time again, when he must’ve thought about how he wasn’t there that last night to try and de-escalate things

and under this lense i am going to view “when i go, bury me six feet in snow” as don’t let time bitter your memories of me. when i’m gone, let me be frozen in your mind as i was before it all fell apart. maybe time will not erase me
