A SELF DIAGNOSIS IS NOT A REAL DIAGNOSIS!
You cannot officially say you have a certain mental illness unless a professional has told you so. Recognize some symptoms which may mean you have a specific mental illness? Okay. The next step is to go see a professional and/or to get help in whatever way you can.
I see 14/15/16 year olds diagnosing themselves with personality disorders that cannot be diagnosed if you’re under 18. I see kids diagnosing themselves with mental disorders that cannot co-exist. There are so many people that treat this shit as a little cute thing that they can put in their description and reblog posts about how their self diagnosed autism is a superpower.
Yes, I get that there are people out there that will be right when they self diagnose. But there will also be people that will be wrong. The thing is, you can’t know whether you’re right or wrong until you see someone. Self diagnosis will never be as valid as a professional diagnosis, so stop treating it as such.
??? okay thanks for assuming that:
all young kids have immediate access to medical help
all families can afford it
all kids have parents who believe in mental illnesses
therapists don’t diagnose you in the same way that you self-diagnose
like………. i went to a therapist like twice and never got diagnosed. i was like “hey i get really shitty moods, i’m pretty sure i’m depressed because i considered suicide” and she was like “sounds good. talk to me about it.”
“therapists don’t diagnose you in the same way that you self-diagnose” In other words “My therapist didn’t give me the disease I wanted and now I have no pity points.” This entire reply reeks of bitterness. like you were sad that you didn’t get diagnosed with depression. Most people would be relieved to hear that they don’t have it, but to meet this with disappointment? Did you want to have depression? Were you hoping to have depression? Literally none of the reasons you listed are valid, All I see are excuses, excuses, and more excuses. So you can’t afford a diagnosis? Oh well, it really sucks but that’s how the cookie crumbles. You may have to get a job to be able to afford it, or if you are a minor, you should wait a bit, because teenage minds are too underdeveloped to form a concrete diagnosis which, since a lot of the “symptoms” can be summed up with “teenage moodiness”, I have parents that don’t like to believe in mental illness unless you’re in a straight jacket in some asylum waiting for your next lobotomy. Oh fucking well, I can’t change their minds. But that’s still not an excuse to self-diagnose. Just wait until you can move out and be legally independent and try to drum up enough money to pay for it yourself, if you are so ready to get diagnosed, and you’re so sure you have [insert mental illness here], you’ll be determined enough to get to the hospital any way you can; not just wait for free hand-outs and give up once things look a little hard.
If you went to the hospital, and were not diagnosed with depression, you should be happy. You should be happy to not be mentally ill. Because most mentally ill people wish that they weren’t, and they are working to not be mentally ill any more. To me, you sound like the kind of kid that faked being sick to get out of school picture day.
