Seven years after the accident and disillusioned by college, Adam returns to Thunder Bay to clean out his parents’ lakefront cottage, drudging up the past like silt. But it’s Nate, not Riley, that Adam finds himself drawn to.

If he’s honest with himself, he wants Nate to be the one to change. If he’s honest, he isn’t even really sure that this place is good for Nate anymore and so why doesn’t he just come to Ottawa with Adam? Like, come for real? But then that feels unfair to ask when Adam is only here because he was running away from whatever his life was back there, and he thinks they both know that — that it was never really about cleaning out the lake house. The fact is, is that Adam feels half like he’s losing his mind and, more than that, like he’s wasting his whole fucking life in Ottawa, but maybe it would be different if Nate were there with him? Maybe then that yawning void of fear Adam’s felt stretching open before him — his whole unknown future — would stop feeling so frightening.

Beside him, pulling him sudden and swiftly back to the present, Riley says, “You pierced your ears?” “Just one,” Adam tells him, reaching up to the silver stud, to feel it skin-warm beneath his fingertips. “Nate did it.” “Oh, man, you let Nate do it?” Adam smiles, meets Riley’s eyes and Riley smiles back. “You’re lucky it didn’t turn septic,” Riley says, and Adam laughs.

The thing is, Nate’s happy to see Riley, and simultaneously pissed it took him so long to come back. Riley is — always has been — the closest thing he has to a best friend, a brother even. Nate thinks the word cousin has a different meaning for other people. He and Riley — the two of them understood how important blood was, and how fickle. Parents could drop you off at your grandmother’s house and never come pick you up again, and it took you years to understand why. Honestly, Nate still isn’t sure if he fully understands; just that, at the end of the day, they didn’t want him. And Riley’s dad? It’s not like he ran off and is living up in the Northwest Territories somewhere or something — he’s dead. Gone for good, untouchable forever. He made it so Riley could never reach him again. Maybe Riley understands abandonment more than Nate ever will, or maybe he thinks it wasn’t his dad’s fault. Nate doesn’t know, they’ve never really talked about it.

Adam has a natural inclination to linger over beautiful things — an inclination that has, historically, gotten him in trouble; teased by other boys in elementary school for picking handfuls of buttercups, dandelions, and forget-me-nots, his fingers stained yellow and bitter-smelling afterwards from the sap. Discreetly touching the satins and velvets as he trailed his mother through the women’s section in The Bay when he was small (the store, not the place), and only wearing soft muted colours now so that he can still fade into the wallpaper, no matter how expensive his clothes are.

So then why’s it so weird? Zach thinks, Then why won’t you kiss me? and then reminds himself for the millionth time that he isn’t supposed to want that… it’s not like they’re together or anything. Since the beginning it’s been about how they’re friends and so they just trust each other with this kind of thing. It’s never been about getting with Josh, he reminds himself. But sometimes he thinks John Whitcomb must’ve been special, somehow, even though Josh won’t admit it.

Zach smiles at him — kind of apologetically. It’s the facial equivalent of a shrug, and he tips his bike back and forth by the handle bars where he’s holding it between them like a barricade — like he doesn’t entirely trust himself not to do something insane — “Well, I guess… you shouldn’t be late.”

hi people i have not abandoned my SDT fic A Sense of Some Fire Getting Close, this has just been an unpredictable, stressful, and very busy month for me including having to wear a heart monitor, a virus two of our cats got, and approximately 5,000 other more menial and frustrating things.
