Joywave, formed in 2010, are an indie rock band from Rochester, New York. They currently consist of four members, Daniel Armbruster, Benjamin Bailey, Paul Brenner, and Joseph Morinelli. The band started with Daniel, Paul, and Joseph releasing the mixtape 77777.
In 2012 the three released their first EP, Koda Vista, officially as Joywave. In 2015 they released their debut album How Do You Feel Now? HDYFN? can be described as a super-techno Killers-esque album. Swish, the 2016 album, includes an alternate version of “Destruction”.
Swish was the original name of The Life of Pablo, the Kanye West album. The album uses the exact color and font of West’s latest album. The successor of Swish is the band’s most recent album, Content, released July of this year. The first song on the album is “Content”, which reminded me of a reboot of Kid A by Radiohead.
Their second, third (called “It’s a Trip!” and can be found above), and seventh songs are the poster children of indie rock. The rest, on the other hand are alternative rock. Heavier, less hippie-happy-time indie, which I’m into. I can say that I truly enjoy Joywave’s music and how creative it is.
They all just fit so perfectly together on the albums, and if you are planning on seeing them tour with Young the Giant and Cold War Kids this fall, I suggest listening and buying Content, and also having a great time. If you are not going on their tour, get some tickets!
Album Review: Cub Sport – “BATS”
BATS is an album by Australian indie band Cub Sport. I was very eager to listen to it, as I’m an avid indie fan. I heard of Cub Sport through some mutual friends, who are in the LGBTQ+ community, that recommended me some cool music. Of course, I fell in love with the smooth voice of Tim Nelson. Their sophomore album completely blew me away. This was so up my alley.
The album contains 13 songs on the standard album, and three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. The first song “Chasin’” sounds very influenced by The Griswolds to me. And I love The Griswolds.
My favorite track on the album is the third track, called “O Lord” which is very gospel-led and very raw starting with the intro of the song. It begins with just Tim, and some harmonies, which made me melt to my feet. The track just felt very open and airy, and it just shows all the talent he has. This also goes perfectly with my next favorite song. The seventh on the album, “Give It To Me (Like You Mean It)” a ukulele-led song. I don’t know if I can express how much I love Tim’s voice, his range in “Give It To Me” is incredible.
Every song on this album is authentic, and catchy. Genuinely gritty, very well written. Zoe’s guitar tones, Bolan’s synths, and Dan’s every rhythm is exactly what BATS needed, and they fit perfectly. There is no doubt in my mind there will be the same emotions and energy on stage as there are on the recording. So whatever Cub Sport releases next, I will jump right on. Catch them on their 2017 Australian tour, and soon their 2018 US tour, which you’ll find me at.

Interview: The Black Hand talks debut album and Michael Cudlitz from “The Walking Dead”
Stella Sanchez: Your new self-titled album, “The Black Hand” came out in September. Any song that stands out and makes you extremely proud?
Chris Hughes: Im very proud of “Day Dreamer”. I free styled most of that song section by section. We turned out the lights and tracked until my voice was gone, I had a lot of feelings to vent on that track, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It is about the loss of a hero, a friend, and a mentor; BMX Legend Dave Mirra.
SS: Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
CH: The writing is a combination of myself for lyrics, and Jeremy Grasso for Instruments. Everybody pitches in so over all its collective, but Jeremy gets the ball rolling.
SS: Were there any heavy influences in “The Black Hand”? What or who inspired the new album? Follow up, any hidden influences?
CH: For myself.. I’m influenced by Eminem, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, and Bring Me The Horizon. Jeremy has a whole different list of influences and when we put them together I can say with pride, it doesn’t sound like a second hand rip off of anyone else.
SS: How was it like shooting “Where Are You Now” with Michael Cudlitz? Any memorable moments with him?
CH: It was an amazing shoot, everything went so smooth. Everybody was so good at what they did and it shows. Most memorable moment with Cudlitz had to be the first moment we walked in the room, he was in the zone and his level of intensity set the pace for the day. Everyone felt it and they all stepped up to the plate with everything they had. Couldn’t be more proud of the video and everyone that was a part of it.
SS: Could you briefly describe the music-making process? Lyrics or Instrumentals first?
CH: I write randomly through out the day I have hundreds of pages of notes to look over when its time to sit in the studio. Sometimes a single line can inspire an entire song but it just depends. The music always comes first before any lyrics become solidified.
SS: Whatare your rehearsals/writing sessions generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you get together or are they more spontaneous?
CH: We usually practice on the weekends together and throughout the week on our own. Rob, our drummer has the most insane work ethic I’ve ever seen. The dude is a beast!
SS: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
CH: Like most bands, we sucked in the beginning; we sucked so bad we got kicked out of our house for too many complaints! It has evolved over the years with experience, music and life.
SS: If you wrote music in any other genre than the Rock n Roll/Metal spectrum, what would you prefer?
CH: Singer songwriter, Rap, and Pop.  I’ve always loved Rap, singing feels good, and pop cause if its done right it feels good.
SS: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
CH: Biggest challenge has always been finance related, and being heard by new people. In this day and age it’s never been easier to get stuff out there but now it’s hard to be found amongst all the static. There are tons of talented bands out there struggling to be heard. We overcome it by finding a way no matter what and never accepting failure as a negative but more so as fuel to keep the fire going.
SS: Who made you want to pick up your first guitar? Where did you get your love for making music together from?
CH: Guitar for me came from my grandpa. He didn’t play, but he got me my first guitar. Mitch Lucker inspired me to be a front man. In my opinion he was the best and I haven’t seen anyone project the power he could. Not yet at least.
SS: What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
CH: Fame in my opinion is an empty goal to chase, Money is a necessity to survive and keep the band going, but my main focus is the art of music. Music has a higher value then any amount of money or fame could ever have.
SS: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
CH: If you aren’t having fun don’t do it. It’s a ton of work and very expensive. If you aren’t in it for the right reasons you wont last and if you are you’ll never stop.
SS: Describe your dream tour opener and venue you’d love to play in.
CH: My dream is to play with slipknot, I don’t have a specific venue to play in, but I would love to play all over Europe!
SS: Anything you’re listening to now? What’s the strangest thing you’re listening to?
CH: I listen to everything. My shuffle mode goes from Black Tongue to Elvis, to Dr. Dre, to Sia. It all depends on my mood.
SS: Any tour plans? What can we expect from The Black Hand in 2018?
CH: [We] definitely have plans to tour we are currently setting all that up. You can keep up with shows and tours through all our social media, and Bands In Town.
SS: Would you like to add anything else to fans reading?
CH: Pay attention, ask questions, accept the good and bad in life, feel everything and remember life is short don’t waste time.

m3 rock festival preview
10 year anniversary of M3 Rock Festival, held in Columbia, Maryland at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. My very first time ever holding a professional camera and being in a photo pit actually occurred at M3 two years ago. I am very fortunate to be attending by myself and representing my publication. The 1977 Glam Rock band KIX from Hagerstown, Maryland, and 1982′s Cinderella Tom Keifer. I grew up listening to every artist performing over the weekend, and I am blown away I get to finally see all these performers with my own eyes and to be able to photograph the event.Â
Y&T, the 1974 heavy metal band from Hayward, California, with hits such as “Summertime Girls," and "Mean Streak,” Glam Rock Faster Pussycat, 90′s Glam Metal Nelson, and Glam Pretty Boy Floyd all play on Friday night.
Seattle based QueensrĂżche, led by the incredible Todd LaTorre, KISS’ former lead guitarist Ace Frehley, the band that brought “Sister Christian”, San Francisco’s Night Ranger, Canadian singer Sebastian Bach from Skid Row, the band with the world’s craziest drummer Slaughter, Christian Metal band Stryper, Warrant that brought the 1990 song “Cherry Pie”, the rebirth of Dio brought by Last In Line after Ronnie James Dio including the original lineup, George Lynch of Dokken’s Lynch Mob, Japanese Metal band Loudness, and New York City’s Tyketto with Danny Vaughn of Waysted all finish the fest on Saturday.Â
Unfortunately, LA Guns will not be performing at M3 due to previous commitments. They will be performing at Cancun Cantina on Sunday for Brad Lee’s Sleazy Slimey Sunday, which I will be covering as well! See you there!
tokyo police club preview
Toronto based Tokyo Police Club are part of the “older” indie scene you’ll feel you have been missing out for years
Formed in 2005, the band has been a hidden gem for years. After playing many basement shows, they went along to play big festivals around Canada. Singer Dave Monks and drummer Greg Alsop eventually dropped out of college to pursue their careers with the band. Their breakout hit, “Wait Up (Boots of Danger)” caught the attention of many. After releasing their debut album Elephant Shell in 2008, the band played the last 6 weeks of Weezer's Troublemaker Tour along with Angels and Airwaves.
They released their newest two-part EP, Melon Collie and The Infinite Radness Pt 1 & 2, earlier in April & September of 2016.  In an interview with Vanyaland, vocalist and bassist Dave Monks discussed some of the reasoning behind the title of the EP, and why it is a two-part EP. He says, “We started putting these songs together in a collection and it didn’t really feel like a full album to us because they all came from different places and sessions. The idea of doing two EPs got put on the table because it let us keep the creative juices flowing by putting a batch of songs together, keep working on the next batch and release them over the course of a year.”
“The name came about because I had this photograph of a watermelon smashed, I showed it to the guys and somebody came up with the idea of having the title be melon collie with one L, and then someone else cut in cartoon style with the infinite radness. Of course, joke album titles happen with every record but it just felt fitting for this moment. This little snapshot of our band in time to go with something spontaneous and to keep that mood going of improvising and trying to keep everything fresh.”
Watch their latest music video, “PCH“, and here for their latest single, “New Blues”
The band has toured with artists such as Foster the People, and will now be supporting Matt & Kim and Future Feats on tour. I will be seeing, shooting, and reviewing their show on May 3rd and the post will be up shortly after that. You do not want to miss out.
We sat down with SLEEPTALK, an independent alt band from Los Angeles, California, to talk about their debut self titled album, “SLEEPTALK” and some things for you to know about them! Their most recent music video can be found here.
Stella: Your debut self-titled album, SLEEPTALK came out earlier this year. Any song that stands out and makes you extremely proud?
Anthony Fitzpatrick: Yes, we released SLEEPTALK on July 28, 2017. My favorite song off of our record is “Midnight/3, 2, 1”. That song makes me feel like I’m hearing the final version of it for the first time every time that I listen.
S: Were there any heavy influences in “SLEEPTALK”? What or who inspired the new album? Follow up, any hidden influences?
AF: Yes of course. My friends, and our lifestyle are extremely influential on this record. Going back to your first question, Midnight for example came to me lyrically the day after New Year’s. That was the last song I had written for the album. I was stuck on that song for days and nothing was coming to me. I went out that night and, boom that song came to me so quickly. Our band itself is very inspired by bands like The Cure, Angeles and Airwaves, The 1975 and of course Blink 182.
S: The lyrics in every song on the album are so well written. What’s your writing process? Do you usually write the first or instrumentals first?
AF: Thank you so much! Normally we write instrumentals first, and then vocals. For me, music isn’t just about the melody, it’s about the song as a whole. If you can get someone hooked on the instrumentals alone you are on a good path. I listen to a lot of instrumental music, so for me it must be massive all around.
S: What’s your favorite decade or one you’d want to live in? Does this decade influence you personally?
AF: The 90’s. It was when I was born. That culture of that decade was so rad, from art to style to music. It was definitely a turning point in art all around.
S:Describe your dream tour lineup.
AF: Would love to play with The Cure.
S: If you wrote music in any other genre than the Indie/Alternative spectrum, what would you prefer?
AF: Metal
S: If you had anyone join your band, who would you want to and why? Would they change your style?
AF: I wouldn’t want anyone to join our band because the group we have now is such a great group, we all write/work great with each other. I would love to add something into the producing side of Sleeptalk. Matty Healy and George Daniel from The 1975 or Tom Delonge from Angels and Airwaves would be such a great experience
S: Anything you’re listening to now? Whats the strangest thing you listen to?
AF: I am currently listening to The Cure – Disintegration. I think the strangest thing that I think I listen to is Trip Hop
S: Any tour plans? What can we expect from SLEEPTALK in 2017/2018?
AF: We have one last show for the year on 10/6 in Sacramento, CA. This will complete the Debut Record cycle for us. New music/shows to come in 2018
S: Would you like to add anything else to fans reading?
AF: Thank you so much for everything. The reaction for our record was/is such an amazing experience. Everyday people send us messages on Twitter or Instagram telling me how our record as gotten them through things that have happened in their life and how this song means so much to them, or that song etc. It is such an amazing feeling. Please help us keep spreading the word, we want to meet each and everyone one of you and we love you dearly. Thank you for taking the time to send us these questions, we can’t wait to speak with you again in the future.

Post and interview by Stella Sanchez
We sat down to talk to Cub Sport, an independent alt/pop band from Brisbane, Australia, to talk about their sophomore album, “BATS” and some facts you may not know about them! The official music videofor BATS’ gospel infused first single “O Lord” breaks down traditional ideas of beauty, masculinity, and sexuality. The deeply personal song was written by singer Tim Nelson in the wake of coming out as gay and in a relationship with band mate Sam. They previously toured with The 1975 on their Australian arena tour.
Stella: Your new album, “BATS” came out this month. Any song that stands out and makes you extremely proud? Tim Nelson: I’m really proud of the whole thing. This is our first release since Bolan (Sam) and I got together and came out as gay, so it feels like a big step personally being open and proud of our sexuality. Two really special songs on the album are Bats and Solo III – they perfectly capture what it felt like for me to be freshly, openly in love for the first time.
S: Were there any heavy influences in “BATS”? What or who inspired the new album?
TN: The album maps out my personal journey over the last couple of years – from the moment I admitted to myself that I was gay, to coming to terms with being in love with my best friend/band mate Bolan, finally acknowledging the situation a year later and to then coming out and getting together. A lot of BATS was inspired by Bolan. Musically, I found Frank Ocean’s Blonde really inspiring. It feels considered but raw and real – that’s a vibe I really love.
S: If you wrote music in any other genre than the Indie/Alternative spectrum, what do you think it would be? TN: R&B/Pop – it’s always been my favorite genre of music and I feel myself gliding further into that territory with my writing.
S: Your outfits are so beautifully put together. Who’s your style icon, and anyone who influences your life? TN: Thank you! We often collaborate with Brisbane-based stylist and photographer Rovel Hagos, we aim to put together striking but soft looks – that’s what we’re vibing at the moment, radical softness.
S: What’s your favorite decade you’d want to live in? Does this decade influence you personally? TN: The 60’s sounded cool but I’m all about the 2010’s – it’s a terrifying time but it’s also incredibly exciting seeing people who have been silenced throughout history finding a voice.
S: Describe your dream tour opener and venue you’d love to play in.
TN: Touring with Frank Ocean is the ultimate dream – imagine getting to watch Frank’s set every night, it would be heaven. I love playing in beautiful, historic venues. One of our favourite venues to play is Paradiso in Amsterdam – it’s a multi-level venue with beautiful details throughout the interior. Website / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram
S: Anything you’re listening to now?
TN: I’m listening to a lot of SZA, Frank Ocean, Perfume Genius, Lorde, Solange, Cloud Control, Moses Sumney and Future.
S: Any tour plans? What can we expect from Cub Sport for the rest of 2017 and 2018? TN: We’ve got some relaxed beach-side shows happening in Australia with Middle Kids through October/November as well as a couple of festivals, then we’ve got our full-scale headline BATS tour in Australia through February/March 2018. Stay tuned for US updates – we’ve got something in the works!
S: Would you like to add anything else to fans reading? TN: If you’re reading from Australia, just a reminder to vote yes in the same sex postal vote!
