Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson - 643 Pages - Completed April 23

I had a lot of fears and apprehensions about reading Mistborn. I had an unpleasant experience once when I tried to listen to an audio book of it while I was still working at Walmart. For some reason when I tried to listen to this book I could not follow it in the least. None of the character's names or the new concepts introduced in the few chapters I tried to listen to stuck in my head at all. I felt like I was listening to a foreign language.

Since then I have read five other Brandon Sanderson books and had a very good time with them. The Stormlight Archives is one of my favorite book series of all time and I've only read two of them. So I figured I should give Mistborn another shot.

It's a good thing I did because I really enjoyed this book. The story was captivating and the characters were all likable and concepts and magics of the world were fun to read about. Alomancy in particular sounds like a good time. It is slightly reminiscent of the abilities in the Stormlight Archive but there are enough differences that I will not fault Mr. Sanderson.

One thing I really enjoyed about the book was the concept of the Lord Ruler. A godlike figure who rose from being a regular guy who was prophesied to defeat some big evil called the deepness. They reveal that he sounded like a nice guy when they find a log book he had written before he came to power. I liked the mystery that surrounded the Lord Ruler and was very satisfied with finding out that the man had been killed before he could fulfill his destiny and replaced by someone who was not pure enough to hold the power.

I was pretty surprised that the Lord Ruler, who is the main antagonist, was killed off so quickly. I do see how the future books were being set up for some grand catastrophe the protagonists will have to overcome by the cryptic dying words of the Lord Ruler. I am pretty sure that even though he was not the true hero of prophesy he was still holding back the supreme evil of "The Deepness" which is alluded to frequently throughout the novel.

I was also slightly disappointed in the swift and abrupt death of Kelsier. I feel like he could have resisted a little more before his ruin was smote upon the pavement. One last jab of defiance is all I ask for. I was not surprised by his death though. I felt that the set up for that was pretty obvious throughout the novel. I was surprised, again, that it happened so early in the trilogy. I assumed it would have happened in the second book.

Overall I am glad I got over my initial impression that the audio book gave me so long ago. This was definitely worth the read and I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the books.

So I just made it to Page 681 last night. I stayed up until 2:30 in the morning even though I had to work early in the morning (work is unpleasant when sleepy) but I just couldn't stop reading. I finally managed to put it down at the end of part three.

The final scene of part three is what made me want to write something about it. The epic duel were Adolin unwittingly challenges someone to a 4 on 1 duel for all of his houses shards.

I was on the edge of my seat (figuratively) the entire fight. I don't think Adolin or Kaladin was going to suffer any sort of injury but maybe Ranarin was going to take a hit or something. Or maybe Kaladin would take a limb shot in front of everyone and then heal it so everyone would see that he was a surge binder. I kind of wish that had happened instead of what did.

I am mad at Kaladin's actions. You would think he would have known how badly him calling out Amaram in front of everyone would turn out. Just because Dalinar tolerated him and gave him a high rank didn't mean the other light eyes were going to stand for his actions. He noted pretty much on every occasion he was with the king about how much he disliked the man and thought he was the embodiment of what was wrong with the light eyes command structure. Seeing all this I really find it hard to believe that his actions would have a positive result for him.

Regardless of all that I am excited to see were this is going to go. Kaladin imprisoned, Amaram the first member of the new Knights Radiant. What I really want to see is Kaladin proving himself to be a true surge binder and just destroy Amaram in a fight.

Norwegian hunter puts a camera on his hunting dog Igor before going out to hunt, hoping to get footage to his film about moose hunting. Later, he discovers that the dog had ran after a wolf. The wolf, after being chased by the dog, turns around and tries to bite the dog but succeeds only in biting the camera - which probably saved the dog’s life.

Woo! Me and my buddy Zero just beat Hammerwatch in a single sitting on normal difficulty. Even got all the planks for the good ending.

I highly recommend this game to anyone. It is an RPG that is similar to Diablo and Gauntlet but its 8-bit. 12 floors of monsters, traps, and puzzles. Four great boss fights. The best part it is it's only $10 on steam.
