A Restless Night
Yes, this was our (for now!) last episode, and what better way to close it off than with an episode about sleeping. Or rather, about not getting any sleep.
Iron Man 3 was a hard one to rewatch. Our biggest issue was... nope, not the Mandarin, it was this guy:
Did they really expect us to believe that they are the same person? Well, it's the same actor, but come on.
We'd rather read Sandman again. We're so excited for the Netflix show!
Please, be good, Sandman. But if it isn't, we will still have the comic.
Insomnia, we won't be reading that one again soon. Maybe, when we've read every page of every King-book, then we'll read it again for the King-connections. But ehmm... what to show you? It's a book! Well, let's show you the cover then.
It's always cool to see what versions of the cover there are of classic books. This was our favorite, it's the Spanish edition (so Thijs can't, but Emilio can read it) and it shows one of the bald little doctors.
And Battlestar Galactica... sometimes, as was the case with Game of Thrones, we watched one episode and thought: well, that was great to see again, but let's move on. Battlestar, we wanted to watch the entire series again after this episode. And we love, really love the old Cylons:
They may not be as creepy as the humanoids, but they creep us out in an entirely new way.

Sword of Power
This week's episode was all about powerful swords, a trope that comes directly from the Arthurian legend. And it shows: the sword Excalibur has clawed its way through all four titles.
Although... the 2002 version of He-Man and the Master of the Universe is the only title that doesn't mention Excalibur, we must admit. But still. A man who rules because he has a mighty sword. Come on! It's right there! Especially the start of the first season of this mostly forgotten reboot was great. Plus, it showed us what Skeletor looked like before he went all skull face:
We have to say: his old face looked way more menacing than the cartoonishly evil skull face.

The game Secret of Mana is an odd one, a great game with the potential to be a masterpiece. We already praised the music, but check out the beautiful sprite art:

And last but, according to our ranking, least: Excalibur. What a strange movie. It's from 1981, but it feels like it's from the 70s. Although there is one element that makes it feel like a movie from... well, from a more recent year, and that's the actors. Patrick Stewart! Helen Mirren! And...
Liam Neeson, Knight of Hipster. Sir Barrista. (and... next to him: Helen Mirren!)

Were-whatnow?
Sometimes when we pick a theme and start looking for titles that will fit in, we're surprised how hard it is to find four different titles from the four decades. The Dragon's Lair episode was one that we thought was going to be an easy one, but it was certainly not. This one, the episode about werewolves that aren't wolves, was surprisingly easy!
Our first title, Altered Beast, has our theme flowing through its veins. Yes, you can turn into a wolfman, but you can also turn into a weredragon, a werebear and a weretiger! But even the final boss is a werebeast, a wererhino even!
It's so random. It's so pink. It makes no sense, but why not.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has just one weird werebeast, but the movie itself comes the closest to an actual werewolf movie. Although it's not a scary beast.
Not by any means...
Cowa! is more a vampire story than a werewolf story, but... it does have one of the weirdest werecreatures ever, a werekoala!
Toriyama's art is the best, what a delightful manga this is.
And then... there is Grimm. So many werebeasts, there are even werebeasts in it that aren't real beasts. I mean, what is this supposed to be?
A birdlizard? And what about the were-glowing-skeleton?
Let us never speak of this series again. Or... as we discussed, devote an entire podcast to it.

Ok, let's show our inventors. Usually on this blog, we'll show you stuff we've talked about during the episode, but this week we'll show you something else, we'll show you that all four of our protagonists are basically the same character. Here is Dexter of Dexter's Laboratory:
A white coat, glasses and - although you can't see that - an ill defined Eastern European accent, that he absolutely didn't learn from his parents. But hey, he's an inventor so you gotta have the accent, right?
Okarin, of Steins;Gate, doesn't have the glasses, nor does he have a weird accent...
But he does have the coat, plus an evil crazy laugh.

We had a barbarians episode at the start of our podcast, and those four barbarians did look the same, kind of, but that's nothing compared to these four idiots. We're enjoying this visual symmetry for this week, because next week it's going to be an utter chaos, when we're talking all kinds of different were-beasts. See ya!
Cool Boats
If there was any episode of Super Magic Time Friends that needed some cool pictures on our blog, it's this one. This episode was all about boats being cool, and while we described them to death, you wanna see 'm too, right?
We started with one of Emilio's favorite cartoons from his childhood: M.A.S.K. And although even he had to admit that it hasn't aged well, the vehicles still kick ass. Let's focus on the aquatic ones:
This is the Shark, a transforms from a Porsche to a submarine. Yes, that looks really unsafe. They all do.
The Gator goes from jeep to speedboat, also a very bad idea, especially when you see the toy version:
Even crazier is the Piranha:
The sidecar of the motorcycle functions as a boat. Great if somebody is driving along in your sidecar, but when you're all by yourself, you have to get into your sidecar while driving...
Oh, and we promised a screenshot of the map of The Netherlands that was in the episode we discussed. So especially for our Dutch fans, enjoy:
On to the movie 2012. Ugh, ok, here is a picture of a cool boat that can be seen in this dumb movie:
A far better title is FAR: Lone Sails, although we weren't as big of a fan as some critics were at the time. The boat is a cool boat though (if you can call it a boat to begin with):
This is what you will see during the game: the interior of the ship. You'll have to refuel it, fix broken gears and put out any fires. Oh, and put up the sail of course.
And last but best, One Piece. We're just going to post a picture of one of our favorite One Piece boats:
Look at this crazy monstrosity. It is so freakin cool. Our life will be nothing but One Piece from now on.

The Halloween Episode
In our Halloween Episode we're talking... Halloween episodes!
Starting with one of the most famous ones ever created: Treehouse of Horror, the annual Simpsons Halloween episode. We discussed the first one, and at that time they still used the tombstone-gag at the start of the episode:
Anything could be on these tombstones. Even Paul McCartney, famously a living Beatle, was on it (which parodied the rumor that he died in the sixties).
Twenty years later, the second season of Community aired, and its Halloween special had the best costumes of our entire episode. OF COURSE it did.
Look at this brilliant Aliens-costume Troy is wearing. It didn't get him a phone number, but it did grant him a place on this blog.
The least Halloweeny Halloween episode was 'Girl Just Wanna Have Fun', the Xena episode from 1996. But boy was it a lot of fun. And boy, what a terrible special effects, even for the nineties.
But... this talking head was a great feature.
And Evil... did we have a big disagreement about that one. At least we agreed on the fact that the Halloween episode was great:
AND we agreed on the fact that it was the only episode that was actually scary. A scary child, wearing a scary mask...

Portals
Boy, did we have fun with the theme of this episode. Who knew portals could be so exhilarating, and weird and... boring even.
Let's start with Sliders. What a sad story, this great series that was killed by bad management. Although we were kind of harsh on the later seasons, the first two are great. But, if you're going to watch it, do know that you're going to watch 90s CGI. So ehm...
Yeah...
Sliders, luckily, never became boring. The Adjustment Bureau was boring from minute... seven, maybe? And the dumbest thing about it: the hats.
The members of the Adjustment Bureau can only travel through the portals when they're wearing a special kind of hat. That just looks like a hat. And why do they look like it's the 50s? Loki did the same thing, but that was a great series. When a movie sucks, those are the kinds of things you're annoyed about.
And then, who made sure our eyes were wide open again? The Spot! The Spidey villain who made his debut in the comic Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man.
He is a silly villain, but if he would be just a little bit smarter, he could be as menacing as the Green Goblin! If you want to see him in a more recent comic, read the latest issues of Deadpool: Invisible Touch (available only on Marvel Unlimited). Deadpool actually has a hard time beating him.
And Portal... If you haven't played it yet, what are you doing here? It's short, it's great, it's brilliant even... Played it? Finished it too? Congrats! Here is some cake!

Part Four, Part Two
To celebrate Thijs' 40th birthday, we decided to talk about four parts four again in this week's episode.
We started with the best one (you can see where it is ranked on our top 120), Mad Max: Fury Road. The fact that just 20% of the special effects is CGI...
...and that the CGI consists mostly of Furiosa's robot arm, that's amazing.
We kept on being amazed by graphics, but with Final Fantasy IV it was on a whole other level. Emilio talked about the use of sprites, and that it's sometimes almost like puppetry, because the beds in the inn are just two separate sprites...
... and your character just stands between the cushion and the cover. But it LOOKS like sleeping. Wearing an armor, though, that's a bit weird.
Emilio is usually the one who hates weird cameos, but this time Thijs was feeling uncomfortable with them. Darth Vader being in Soulcalibur IV just didn't sit right with him.
But even Emilio had to admit that it's a bit weird that the mighty Darth Vader has to fight all these weak sword fighters.
And finally, the fourth and final Jaws movie, Jaws: The Revenge. What to show, so many hilarious mistakes... We'll go with Michael Caine's shirt:
This is Michael Caine, who just climbed out of the water, with a perfectly dry shirt. Is it worse than the fact that you can see the propeller underneath the shark during the underwater scenes? Yes and no. Let's go with a maybe. Thank you Michael Caine, we love you for being in this movie, and for many more reasons.
Next week, it's portal time. Are we including the game 'Portal'? Maybe?...
I Lost My Pet
Awwww... that's the best summary of this week's episode. Although... not every pet we discussed is that cute.
Let's start with Blaster Master:
This is Jason's pet frog in his mutated form. Fred is pretty angry and because of how Jason treated him, we're not that surprised that he is angry. What a dick, that Jason.
The pet you were all waiting for:
This cute beagle puppy called Daisy. The distributors of John Wick were totally against the death of Daisy. "You kill the dog, you alienate the audience, and the movie's done", they said. Nope, it was the glue that held the movie together.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch owns this angry cat:
Salem, once a witch, but turned into a cat because he tried to take over the world, many centuries ago. It's such an ugly puppet, but maybe that was part of his punishment too.
And (if you can call it a pet, Emilio was doubting that during the episode), Appa!
Avatar: the Last Airbender wouldn't be the excellent series it is without everybody's favorite skybison.

It Was a Woman After All
This week we had four female surprises! Four characters who - later in the story - turned out to be a woman! Although, none of them really surprised us to be honest.
The game Metroid is so old, so famous, the fact that Samus Aran is a woman was old news before the 80s were over. Still, a very cool decision of the makers of this game. Less cool:
The fact that you get to see her half naked when you beat the game.
Even less surprising was the reveal in Sky High. In this movie, the bad guy, Royal Pain, has a sidekick, Stiches, who sounds and looks an awful lot like Jim Rash.
Jim Rash' character is also Mary Elizabeth's character's guardian. So... who could be behind Royal Pain's mask. Who, I say. Who?
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a fantastic movie. Only downside:
The Phantasm herself. What a boring design. No wonder DC never brought her over to the comics until 2020. For Harley Quinn it took a year to make that jump!
And finally, our favorite knight in Game of Thrones:
Not very surprising the audience here had no idea there was a woman behind the helmet. Look at her, she is so tall! We love Brienne and we love the actress, Gwendolyn Christie, who will play Lucifer in the Sandman series that's coming soon. Lucifer!

No Memory Whatsoever
This week we discussed four amnesiac heroes. Amnesia in fiction ranges from 'I have no idea who I am' to 'I can't remember what happened to me between last Tuesday and Friday'. The four heroes of this week's titles had a hard time remembering anything at all.
So... Breath of the Wild. Emilio is a huge fan, Thijs respects the game but it's not for him. So what happened? Emilio started ranting about how good the game is. And he's right! But how on earth did he fail to mention that you can ride a bear!

Generator Rex was new for us and here it was the other way around. Emilio: not much of a fan, Thijs liked it a lot more. But we both agreed on one thing:
The E.V.O.'s look amazing! Very familiar if you've watched a lot of anime, but they're still amazing!
Speaking of looking great:
We were in love with Dark City. The looks, the sounds, everything! Go see it! Don't be like moviegoers in 1998 and watch this movie!
A movie you probably did see is RoboCop. We didn't even talk about this guy:
Does the movie need this gross and horrible scene? No! But do we like it? Yes!

Robots are a Man's Best Friend
Together, we own a lot of robots (as we already said in our newest episode). Apart from tons of Transformers, Thijs owns a hard working Roomba and a fully functional BB8, and an R2D2 (the cool ones made by Sphero). Emilio owns the... Emilio!
A cute but pretty large remote controlled robot he even took with him on stage.
But... what if we could choose an additional robot to join our household? Who would it be?
Emilio's number one was...
...Number Five! An enormous robot, who was, like Emilio the robot, operated from a distance, in this case by a puppeteer. You can see how it works in this video.
Thijs' ideal friend was this cute bot:
Metabee, of the surprisingly good Pokemon-ripoff Medabots. He looks like Marvin the Martian's sympathetic little nephew and we adore him.
Thijs is also very much in love with this cute little fella...
...Chibi-Robo. He cleans stains off your floor and picks up trash, that he then stores in his head, where a surprising amount of stuff can fit in.
A robot we would've liked to see more of is...
... K2SO. There are three movies with Anakin in it, and there is just one K2SO movie. One! More, we say, more K2SO!

Mentors
It was mentor time this week. We started with The Matrix and Neo-mentor/fanboy Morpheus, but here we wanted to shine a light on the Nokia phone Emilio was talking about.
It's the Nokia 8110. Look at that beautiful baby. With this monster you can give your friends a phone call like it's 1999.
Professor Layton is great, but we gotta admit: sometimes this game is just like doing math.
This is actually one of the puzzles. And we loved it.
Daredevil's Stick is a horrible character. This scene may look lovely...
... but give it a watch and you'll see what we mean.
Speaking of Daredevil, let's put his origin story next to the Turtles' origin story.
It's so on the nose, you gotta love it, right?
Next week we're going to discuss a more friendly subject, robot helpers!
Dragon's Lair
Dragons! Lots of dragons in this week's episode, and they all have one thing in common: they live in a lair. Three of them own lots of money and the fourth is played by Sean Connery, although we may have mentioned that during the episode.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is our favorite movie... of the entire... Hobbit trilogy... and Thijs wasn't even sure of that. The thing he was sure of: that it's pretty weird that Kili's hand is bigger than Thauriel's hand!
She is twice his size! And yes, dwarves have exceptionally big hands, but this is just madness!
Our favorite title this week was Dragon's Lair. Just look at it:
Does this look like a 1983 arcade game to you?
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic didn't turn us into Bronies, but it is a delight to watch it now and then. Thijs went even so far that he decided which pony was his favorite:
It's Rainbow Dash. No discussion about it.
And last but not least, the Sean Connery movie in which Sean Connery plays a dragon.
It's called Dragonheart and the dragon is played by Sean Connery.

Villains Taking Their Time
It was a long and slow week with a lot of Dragon Ball Z, but we did have a lot of fun with this episode.
Far Cry 3 was one of our favorite games of the PS3/XBOX360 generation. Not just because of the gameplay, but also because of this guy:
Their first plan was to have some muscled big nobody as the big bad, but Michael Mando's audition completely changed their plans. Thank the heavens for that. Vaas became the poster boy for the game and he is still one of the greatest game villains of all time.
So, you know the Riddler, right? Batman villain, question marks on his green suit. Imagine if he would look like this:
So edgy, this Riddler. And lame. So very lame. One of the many reasons why we didn't like the story arc 'Riddle me That'.
Warlock surprised us a lot by how obscure but good this movie was. Well, Thijs mostly, because Emilio was less of a fan. But...
...even Thijs had to admit: these prosthetics on Lori Singer are the worst.
And Dragon Ball Z gave us Frieza, the slowest but bad assest villain of all. We briefly discussed his many forms, but...
...we wanted to highlight this one, because it's so weird. He barely uses it in the anime. Unsurprisingly, because it looks very uncomfortable.

Awkward Origins
Some franchises started out great, like Back to the Future, or Star Wars. Some though... In our new episode we went from a franchise that started out a bit awkward... to one that started out so awkward that it makes you think twice about this whole Buffy thing.
Ok, let's start with One Punch Man.
Great manga, an awesome anime. But the webcomic it all started with? The writing was and still is excellent, it's clever, funny, it's the best. But it's hard to look at. Some (Emilio) like it more than others (Thijs), and the debate concerning the drawing capabilities of ONE (the pseudonym of the author and artist of the webcomic) is still going on. What do you think? Is it a drawing style, or is he just incapable of drawing it... better?
Not that award you say? Let's talk about Thor. The MCU has a lot of fans, but most fans started being a fan in 2012, when The Avengers came out. Because a lot of what came before wasn't that great. How dare we say such a thing? Ok, it's certainly not bad, but it isn't great either.
Remember these four characters? No? Well, nobody does, because they're terrible.
But, honestly, thing start really getting awkward with Street Fighter, the game that everybody tends to forget. And they should, because it just isn't that fun to play. Although... who can forget Joe!
Well, everyone apparently. Even Capcom keeps forgetting he exists.
But the most awkward origin of all, that's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The movie, not the series. Although, since we know how Joss Whedon treated his actresses, the series has become a bit awkward as well. But that's for another time.
One of the biggest faults of the movie was casting Paul Reubens. Not because he was arrested for pleasuring himself in an adult movie theatre the year before this movie came out, but because his acting was so offensively unfunny.
Look at him, this is not something you want to see in a Buffy movie.
Next week the titles will be way better (also somewhat slower, but at least they're better) when we're talking about Villains Taking their Time.
