hello! i wanted to ask about domestic. i was curious about the meaning behind it? it definitely seems like a bit of a romantic song to me, but i want to hear from you what message you wanted to spread when you wrote and recorded it.
i dont typically get asks about my music career on here, but im gonna take this & open asks to anyone who wants to ask me about my music in the future.
domestic was a song that i wrote when i was trying to understand everything about the world a lot better. its not about me, not inherently. its vague for people to cling onto, because it was supposed to be an antithesis to many of my poems, which are very much confessional pieces about my own experiences and perceptions of life.
domestic is about addiction.
addiction to what? i dont know. it can be anything. it can be a person, someone who writes and proudly bears you as the spectacle that makes them tick, who can solve you in a blink, and know you just from laying atop your chest and scrunching their long limbs around your body. it can be a drug, a needle filling the hole inside that comes in pitch-dark depression, a powder under your nostril after a day of noise-headache-blunder. something that you chase, something that digs its nails into your veins and sucks you away instead of sucking you into luster. it can be starving, the hole is filled by the emptiness that comes with pleasure. it scars. you see it. you know that nobody can stop you. not one, not one, not one. it can be. it can be anything it is to you. the "me" to "you" is not me to you, it can be so much more than that.
it reads as a song about intercourse. it is. the original last lyrics even being:
i take in
soak in
love in
every single modicum
and every single inch of
fucking you
before it was eventually changed, having "love in" become a slurred mess that sounds like the original verse as well as the word "covet," and "fucking" being sung as "loving."
its about sex. the way someone holding you and burying their body against yours is pleasurable. the way that a narcotic slithers up your body so erotically with such a pulse. the way that your stomachs pit can make you feel infinitely ruined. its sex in a way thats not inherently sex. it just exists as something you can spin and swirl into vapid whirlwind hell through a pinwheel and find something intrinsic in.
i had an inspiration when i first wrote it. its somewhat obvious knowing what i write about on ao3. its not about one specific pairing, what i find is that every time i fixate on anew domestic can still apply. its up to you whether you want to interpret the original lyrics as something that i frequently post about now, or if you want to take it as some other two rockstars from my past. but, what i can say, is its about two rockstars, one taller, one shorter, one with lighter hair and one with darker hair.
i also projected some experiences with my ex into this song. the third and fourth verses, specifically.
i wrote the song when i was twelve years old, only having known how to play guitar for four months without a lesson. yet, somehow, it stuck enough for me to want to use it as my debut.
thank you for the ask, i highly appreciate it :)
