【Fourteenth Doctor / The Hermit】
There's so many horror games about having to try to weed out and deal with inhuman imposters, but I want one where the script is flipped. You are something inhuman, you are an imposter, and if you want to survive you have to blend into a world that is trying to hunt you down and destroy you. You aren't human, but you must masquerade as one and infiltrate their world, or you will die.
I actually think we need to start inverting more Horror premises/tropes.
Like "You have to venture into the scary insane asylum!" VS "You're a patient who was admitted by force to an asylum, and you are very clearly in real danger, but everyone is pretending that you're just deluded, and are essentially leaving you to die because they don't really see you as a person."
I feel like there's a lot of Horror tropes built off of the fear of the other, when in reality it's actually often the other who is in danger. Maybe we could start recognising that more.
Interesting how the first half of the post has picked up popularity while the second part, which perhaps clarifies the idea of the original post, hasn't.
It's been interesting to see what media people are recommending based on the first post alone. A lot of recommendations for games/franchises like World of Darkness, Carrion, Kill All Humans, Among Us, etc. It's interesting because these are games that put you into the shoes of the violent other that has to infiltrate, without actually challenging the idea that the other is a threat. They actually parrot the ideas of the other as violent.
Funnily enough, the people recommending the comedy game Octodad understand the post much better than most of the people recommending horror media. A few mentions of Am I Nima, which isn't finished yet but does look like it could be what I am describing, so brownie points to the people recommending that.
But everyone saying stuff like "This is just being Trans/Autistic/Etc" really gets it, like really really gets it. Horror always communicates the fears and anxieties of the people who create it, this post was basically: "What if instead of communicating the fear of the other, we communicated the fears of the others, which are actually vastly more legitimate than the dominant groups fear of the other. We should recognise that it is overwhelmingly the others who are the ones who actually suffer and die, all for the perceived "saftey" and "comfort" of the dominant group."
This idea is about transphobia, it is about ableism, about anti-imigrant rhetoric and white supremacy, about queerphobia, it's about all of it. It is horror from the perspective of minority groups. It is the twisting of a trope built upon reactionary fears and narratives in order to critique them, it is a direct allegory for all those experiences you are describing.
Overall, it's just interesting to see who gets it and who doesn't.
A cool thing about Torchwood being in the same universe as Doctor Who is that everything that happens probably has a scientific explanation, they just don't always have it.
Some episodes are more on the fantasy side and I choose to believe that's just because the Doctor isn't there to be like "WOAH incredible magnificent. These are Zorks from galaxy T-657. They feed off the psychic energy you release when you dream. Beautiful. They're gonna kill us all ☝️ unless we spray them with pasta water which is their secret weakness. I'm gonna capture them and release them back in their natural environment :D "
So instead Jack is like "fairies 🧐"
And then he shoots them on sight
One of the things about Natsuhi that really gets me is that she’s trying so hard to be a tradwife to cope with her situation but like. She’s bad at it. She’s really really bad at being a tradwife. She’s short tempered, belligerent, easily baited by basically anyone trying to get a rise out of her, and constantly makes her husband look worse in her attempts to defend him. She never sits quietly at his side, she never listens when he’s trying to get her to stop and let him do the talking, and she’s constantly taking charge of situations in his stead. Honestly, she just doesn’t have the temperament to be a tradwife, even if she thinks that’s what she is and what she wants.
And what’s the craziest about this is that Sayo figured this out before Natsuhi herself did. Natsuhi is someone who tries to cling onto power in any and every situation she can, in part because she ultimately doesn’t have any agency at all. She tries to find an angle through which to look at her life where she’s the one calling the shots, where she’s the one in charge, because in her super traditionalist framework that’s what autonomy is— it’s always just been punching down. In her mind, punishment and power might as well be synonymous; you’re either being told what to do or telling others what to do.
Natushi could never be the proper, submissive wife that she’s trying to be because she’s just not that good at lying to herself. She’s constantly trying to power grab in petty situations, to overcome the lack of autonomy she’s so frustrated about by throwing her weight around whenever she can. And I think that’s exactly why Sayo gave her the unloaded gun. Natushi immediately becomes bolder— she lashes out, she takes command of situations, she’s confident— because to her the gun is just the physical manifestation of having the agency to be those things at all. She can take charge of situations because in her mind she’s gotten the power to do so now— agency over herself is always coupled with power over others to her. But the gun was always empty and the promise was always false.
It doesn’t matter how Natsuhi feels or what power she wields over the people beneath her, because she never really had any autonomy so long as she was Ushiromiya Natsuhi. She was and is only ever allowed to do what they permitted. When she fights with Eva in the family conferences, it’s because Krauss is wiling to sit back and let her be the scapegoat. She can bully the servants because the people in the house who are actually supposed to be in charge of them don’t care. Natsuhi fights like a dog for any semblance of power or choice in the narrative, not realizing it’s still within the confines of what the people who have stolen her agency are allowing her have. She’s given a metaphorical gun to wave around, but even though it smokes and fires and makes noise, there was never any real threat to the people who gave it to her, because she was given the gun unloaded. Perhaps more importantly though, she doesn’t know the difference

So I guess it’s time to talk about that staffside thread from yesterday about the survivors and all the major loredrops we got in it. Honestly I’m getting really worried about the survivors, but to actually get into it.
Well the first thing I want to talk about is Tamba blocking the rest of the survivors and completely shutting herself down from them, being the only one of the four to have not met up with each other. This really hurts as this means her only actual mouthpiece for talking about the trauma of the killing game she locked away from her, and has to keep that to herself for who knows how long. It’s really devastating for me considering her exit interview and her talking about how she hurt so many people to survive, so I can imagine she blocked them out of the extreme guilt she faced, possibly even worsened by Wada’s death. It’s also mentioned that Yanagi was constantly trying to contact her which makes me especially sad from that one episode where after learning about her family situation he gave her his phone number and said that it’s always ok to talk to him…
And with from what Tamba’s been doing by herself it’s been said that she’s essentially done with gymnastics from her injury. Which worries me as she’s back to her parents and from what we know how they’ve treated her in the past for not being too keen on gymnastics I’m worried that now they’d consider their medallion daughter a waste or a lost cause. As well as her injury has been said to be getting worse which is worrisome, especially considering that some people are speculating she’s been self harming and that’s what’s making it worse. But even with Tamba being back with her awful parents and blocking the only people in her life who she can talk to about the killing game, at least she’s got a girlfriend now who I can hope is a good support system for her if nothing else. It’s notable how her girlfriend is described to be muscular which is really making me think of how Tamba idolised Hayashi in the killing game, and how she could be projecting onto her which really isn’t healthy especially since she has no one to talk to about that.
And then there’s Hiroaki, who I’ve been constantly worrying about all the time after what we learned about him. He’s been really taking it horribly after the killing game and has doubled down on his narcotics addiction, as well as has taken up alcoholism, which really speaks to me that this is getting bad as he was only a social drinker before. This is really concerning for his health as combining drugs and alcohol at the same time is really dangerous, and that we know he’s been getting crossfaded around five times a week for MONTHS now. It’s making me think that Hiroaki could be spiralling back into his suicidal tendencies again, knowing that this is super dangerous and accepting that it could kill him as he’s basically lost everything at this point.
It seems like a lot of this drug an alcohol usage comes from partying a lot from what was said. Which I can imagine Hiroaki has been doing a lot of as of recently to distract himself from all the horrible things he’s gone through and all the conflicting thoughts in his mind and just go back to how life was before and get so high and drunk he couldn’t even think anymore. It’s really dangerous for him if he is just left out in the open like that completely intoxicated all alone, especially as a celebrity. We know that he’s been getting Yanagi to pick him up all the time when he’s blackout to drive him home, which I mind you is a three hour drive. And as well Hiroaki has been keeping all of this a secret from Seiko and Ojima, the two people he’s closest to in his life and could genuinely help him. It seems like he wants to keep it away from them as much as possible as he doesn’t want them to confront him and get in a big fight. As of now, Hiroaki wants to stay blissfully mindless about everything, seeping his sorrows deeper and deeper into drugs and alcohol and giving up on his life, falling into a blissful despair.
And to address something I’ve been deathly worried about, I’m genuinely scared he could die. From everything we’ve been seeing with him scarily parallels what happened to Wada. He’s drowning himself in his self destructive habits even more, and has been not allowing the people who could help him the truth, and is just rotting away. I feel like this could also apply to Tamba as well. She’s not in as immediate danger as Hiroaki is, but from her leg injury getting worse and who knows what she could be doing to herself, along with blocking out her support system, these two really spell death to me. But there is hope in my eyes. Hiroaki and Tamba still have people who can support them in their lives. Ojima and Seiko are super close to Hiroaki so I feel like with how he’s been describing to have been getting crossfaded 5 times a week, they ought to find out and confront him. And even if Tamba has distanced herself from the other survivors, I do genuinely hope her girlfriend is a nice person who can support her in all the ways she can. The fact that Tamba was even able to make a girlfriend just 5 months after the killing game really shows a lot to me and that there may be some hope there.
So for the other two students, even though they’re not directly in danger they still don’t seem to be getting any better which is worrying.
Yanagi has moved away from his family and likely to Azumino as it’s 3 hours from Tokyo. It just comes to me as especially depressing as this is where Hayashi lived and promised to take him to all the museums so I can’t imagine how much he’s been mourning to do that. Even to the point of moving away from his mother and sister is really disconcerting for me. One of the things I always felt the survivors should do first before they go find each other is reconnect with their families/the people who they were closest to beforehand. That Yanagi couldn’t even stay with his family from the pressure to help Hiroaki and prevent him from losing himself. From how much time he was away from his family, only for not long afterwards him moving out I could imagine to be very upsetting for them.
And about the thing with Hiroaki, like I said the fact that he had to move out of his family closer to Tokyo to be the person who has to constantly pick him up when he’s crossfaded is depressing. It’s not like Hiroaki has anyone else to do that for him, and he’s refusing to let Seiko or Ojima know so Yanagi is the only person who could do that. Pushing himself as far to drive 3 hours out every time to just drive him home. He’s really forced himself to be the caretaker for him when all is lost, sacrificing his own comfort and family just to help Hiroaki. And what is especially concerning for me is that Yanagi isn’t even addressing the root problem. It seems he knows that Yanagi just would keep grumbling to himself rather than contact proper people about it, which is why he’s so worried about not letting Seiko or Ojima find out. I genuinely, really hope Yanagi changes this attitude. If this keeps up Hiroaki’s life could be in dire danger and Yanagi would the the only person to save him. I can imagine he blames himself for Wada’s death so much, so I hope he takes the step forward to change things with Hiroaki.
Ojima has been doing absolutely nothing the whole time. Which is frankly expected as thats his whole coping mechanism. The only things mentioned that he actually did outside of dissociating is meeting up with Hiroaki and Yanagi, going to the store to buy glass cleaner and going to the store to buy smart lightbulbs. And if it’s at a point where going to the store for an errand is a notable thing that Ojima did, likelyhood is he’s dissociated 90% of the time after the trauma from the killing game. Especially since he was so hesitant to dissociate in the killing game as he was worried about putting himself in danger and leaving Hiroaki alone and all the stuff like that. Honestly I’m getting worried for his health here, not in a way it’s extremely dire like Hiroaki, but just that dissociating all the time can’t be good for him. Dissociating and running away from your problems without addressing it is not going to help anything in the long run. As well his physical health could be deteriorating as dissociating so much like that he’d probably not be taking care of his hygiene that well and just be spiralling. And I could also very much imagine him eating less for the same reason and perhaps losing weight quickly. This is all speculation to be fair, but dissociating so much like what he is doing must be very bad for his health if he’s barely conscious anymore.
Something as well I want to mention with Ojima which is very noteworthy is his relationship with Hiroaki as of now. Especially how it’s gotten to the point they’re getting intimate now. With how Kan didn’t even know their relationship or if they were lovers or not really makes me think they’ve got a situationship going on, where they’re technically together in a way but not offical. I do think this revelation is quite suprising to me of how quickly Hiroaki and Ojima have gotten intimate from just knowing each other for 5 months, especially with their trauma around stuff like that. I guess it shows how comfortable they are with each other. To be completely honest I think this is the only potentially healthy thing going on here as something like this is way better than their destructive coping mechanisms. And like even whenever they meet to feel each other up or whatever they’re doing it’s genuinely some progress being made. It’s just things might not go to well if Ojima learns about Hiroaki’s spiral into drug addiction again and they start fighting or a possibility of them becoming co dependent. Their relationship is really interesting to me so I’ll probably talk more about my analysis in another post.
And well thats my analysis on this so far, was not expecting a massive pink survivorside loredrop like this all of a sudden but it’s occupying my brain a lot from how much I’m attached to the pink survivors. And funny all of this came out like a day after my hope vs despair analysis on the survivors, it really puts into another perspective all of this huh. But anyway if you made it this far I appreciate you listening to my rambling and would love to see any more thoughts on this because god it’s so interesting yet depressing to get proper post game survivor content in danganronpa.
Something I’ve been thinking about when it comes to the survivors of tetro pink that I think a lot of people who critique it really don’t get is that the survivors really show what little hope of fighting back they have. Tetro is a lot more grounded and heavy hearted than canon danganronpa, so the comparison between the canon survivors always ending off the story by looking to the future with hope, wishing to salvage the world and start anew. The tetro survivors are left in the dust with no hope of fighting back against their kidnappers and stopping any future incidents and have to live with their trauma.
To me the survivors really do fit the Hope vs Despair narrative danganronpa goes for, but instead of looking forward to hope they’re on this thin threshold. They cannot live up to the hope the survivors did, they cannot fight back. But hope isn’t always about grand feats like that, hope can be trying to move on, reconnecting with loved ones and reaching out to the other survivors. It can be trying to get back to daily life after all the trauma. Hope in this case, is just to try and not fall into despair, which can be easy knowing you cannot fight back or talk to anyone and the trauma will never leave you from that.
The surviving students of pink really fit this narrative I’m thinking about, they’re not the ones to wallow and rot in despair after the killing game, but they’re not the ones who’ll try to fight back as much as they can. They’re on this thin line where they have to choose their future.
I feel like this surviving cast embodies these elements a lot. They’ve both made friends, learnt to appreciate themselves more, but have also had major fallouts and have gotten more insight into bad stuff in their lives they may have not properly known. Hiroaki broke down his persona, Tamba had to face with the way her parents were abusing her into gymnastics, and Yanagi had to come to terms with how his exes truly treated him, for example. It’s exactly how they said at the end, they cannot go back to living their lives before and moving on, they’ve effectively become different people, and once again it’s up to them and their support systems on wether they fall into despair or not. And even after the killing game, someone like Ojima retaining his strong will in spite of everything he’s been through and has been learning about himself. And Wada, who has lost any sense of self he’s had and wishes he died for Sasaki much earlier. These 5 very much have had experiences in the killing game and in their past life that’d leave them on a threshold like this more than most of the other students I can imagine. And we’ve already seen some of the other students succumb to despair, or their hope driving them to reckless ambition.
This makes me want to talk about the 5th case a bit and how it fits this perfectly, as I often see people say one of these two should’ve lived. Hayashi to me represents this reckless hope, she’s so insistent on fighting back and protecting people and saving everyone that she carries all of this on her shoulders and has little regards for her own safety in the end. But eventually this way of thinking got her killed, a show that hope like this isn’t always the best path. And Hasegawa represents the despair someone can fall into. He sunk so deep into his own sorrows after Kamimura’s death that he lost all hope in the other students and himself, trying to end things off by giving everyone what they deserved. These two very much show the epitome of what Hope and Despair mean in tetro, and the survivors are the leftovers of that who get to chose their own path.
And with Wada, he’s one of the survivors who fell into despair and succumbed. He never felt like he had any hope in his life, and when he was finally offered a kind hand in the killing game, they were all taken away from him. And he probably didn’t believe he could recover from that. Wada was offered hope, as the other survivors kept trying to contact him and offer support. But everything was too much for him, and the despair overtaking him lead to his starvation to death.
To me I feel like this is such a satisfying narrative choice, especially when viewed through this lens. These 5 embody the hopelessness of going through something so traumatic and unable to fight against, but as well the desire to keep surviving after everything, even if they can never lift the weight off their shoulders. It’s a thin line to balance and with all the highs and lows these 5 particularly experienced in the killing game, it really feels perfect to end off the story on this node of a realistic view of hope and despair. And the ending with Wada, speaks to me as a person succumbing to that despair and allowing it to take over them.
“my doctors are recommending I get a C-section due to [VALID MEDICAL CONCERN THAT CAN KILL MOTHER AND BABY] but I don’t want one and I think they just want more money out of me” doctors are lazy as fuck, do you really think they’re chomping at the bit to perform surgery? I can’t get them to run bloodwork and they don’t even have to do that themselves
“natural immunity is good for kids” is my least favorite antivax pro-baby kissing phrase because. actually no. simple childhood illnesses can cause major lifelong disabilities. happened to me. happened to JFK. not to mention the millions of children in cemeteries across the globe who died from preventable and treatable common childhood ailments. “natural immunity” is not better than vaccine related immunity and getting kids sick when reasonable precautions could prevent it is bad.
so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, here’s a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like you’re supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If there’s an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
“freedom of speech is under attack by the libs because a single fascist debater who had been speaking freely for 12+ years was assassinated yesterday. don’t think too hard about us redacting much of American history from the museums or threatening to hold back funding from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children if they didn’t remove parts of their website discussing LGBTQ issues effecting children and edit their articles to deadname missing trans children.”
candy before beer youre in the clear. beer before candy hurricane sandy
OP, FYI, if you post on tumblr you post in real life
“people don’t like it when they don’t get their treats” and “people don’t like it when their standard of living decreases” are both the exact same idea but one phrases it sympathetically and the other phrases it unsympathetically. This is known as rhetoric.
-ish.
'My standard of living decreased, I had to sell my vacation home.'
'My standard of living decreased, I had to get a second job to pay rent on my apartment '
One of these is not like the other.
