actually he became an auror at first bc he thought he still had to save the world, but when hagrid retired he replaced him as professor of care of magical creatures. he wanted to carry on hagrid’s legacy, and who better to do that than the soft boy who hangs out in the owlery, and can see thestrals, and who connected with buckbeak?

harry petitions to make the forbidden forest not so forbidden anymore, taking groups of students on camping trips and teaching them about its creatures lovingly like a magical steve irwin.

at this point, ginny has retired from professional quidditch because they’re both getting older, and so when they both move onto the castle grounds she becomes the flying instructor and referee. their kids hate that their parents are there, but harry is comforted by being able to visit dumbledore’s portrait, and eventually mcgonagall’s, when he’s feeling bad. 

at first harry does it for hagrid, but then he realizes he chose to go back because, as we all know, hogwarts is his home.
