felix loathes awkward run - ins . he’s a social guy — likes to talk , likes to be friendly . but bumping into luci , his … well , the label was fuzzy ( ex ? sort - of girlfriend ? a fling before stella rocked his world … ? ) whatever it was , throws him off balance . makes it hard to live up to that reputation , to stay chill and friendly . so , heart hammers against ribs , palms slick with sweat , fumbling with his coffee cup and nearly spilling it on her shoes . this discomfort — it isn’t from any leftover feelings ( there never were any ) but from the sheer awkwardness of it all .

“ luci , hey . long time no see . new york treating you well ? ” he already knows the answer , of course . he’d seen her instagram posts , her name in magazines . he’d scrolled through his social media feeds , keeping tabs on her life , as he did with most people from high school . it was a habit he’d picked up post - graduation , initially to ensure classmates wouldn’t reveal what happened the night chris disappeared . but it had become something else now … was it curiosity ? guilt ? paranoia ? or maybe … just wanting to feel connected to something familiar ? hard to say .

a bead of sweat trickles down sun - baked nose , stinging blue eyes . with a grunt , felix swipes it away , the back of his forearm brushing tiredly across his skin . then , with a practiced flick of the wrist , sends the stray soccer ball sailing back towards the kids . “ man , these kids are getting faster every week , ” wheezes , kind of half - jogging , half - trudging closer to peter , really feeling the burn in his legs . “ or maybe we’re just getting old . ”

breath comes in short , ragged bursts as he bends down to stretch his complaining knees , a wince escaping lips when they creak in protest . yeah , maybe felix was being a bit dramatic . this kind of physical exertion was nothing new to him ; he’s used to pushing his body to its limits , used to the burn . but , while oregon was certainly chilly , it was nothing like the brutal combo of vancouver’s damp cold and the frozen hockey rink . he’s used to the bone - numbing cold that clung to him even after leaving the ice , the kind he only sweated through during a hockey fight . this was different — a lighter , crisper cold . he’s not even wearing a jacket right now , and he is still sweating . it would take some getting used to , some time to re - acclimate .

“ think they’ll be ready for the game next week ? ” asks , punctuating his question with jabs to his best friend’s chest , light and playful . “ because if this is how warm - ups are treating me , i might need to coach the rest of this season from a beach chair , with a megaphone and an ice pack duct - taped to my knee . ”

covered behind bright blue sunglasses, dark circles decorate the space below his eyes, taejin hasn't had a good sleep since the news broke out, the horror of his nightmares creep each time he shuts his eyes, chris lifeless body floating in the lake. when he startles awake, it feels like he can't breath properly, heart crushing against chest. its suffocating - but like always he avoids his thoughts and feelings with a variety of pills, anything to shield him from reality, to keep him numb. headed towards bewty & the treat for a cup of coffee ( because his place still smells of smoke and he's to out of it to deal with his angry neighbours ), taejin recognizes felix amongst the long queue almost immediately, and without a second thought cuts in front off the line. ignores those that are clearly irritated. “ hello goldilocks, ” its whispered right into the canal of felix's ear, standing impossibly close he disrupts any sense of personal space. a smile gracing his features when he steps back. attention shifting, he leans over the counter, waving his hand in the direction of the barista - the movement causing his shirt to ride up revealing a scar sneaking the left side of his hip. “ can i get a orange juice with two shots of espresso. ” tagging it alongside felix's order, ringed fingers rummage through the box of displayed lollipops, fishing out two, only to scrunch his nose at one of the flavours, “ tried making pancakes this morning almost set the whole kitchen on fire, so this will do. ” satisfied with a fruity watermelon, tae turns around to lean back against the counter, finally giving the other his full attention. he lifts his sunglasses up and places them on the crown of his head only to blink a few times to adjust his eyes, “ was your hair always this bright ? feel like i'm looking directly at the sun. ” big pupils move to take him in, “ the old ladies must be thrilled to have you back in town. ”

it’s impossible not to notice taejin . he moves like he demands attention , every gesture sculpted , each step a near - provocation … aimed at felix . at the very least , that’s what felix thinks . and hey , maybe it is nothing more than that when they share a space . a provocation . because taejin gets too close , hurls a playful , infuriating insult at him , whispers in his ear … and it works . god , it works too well . and felix even hunch his shoulders , just slightly , try to put a barrier between them . roll his eyes , the same way he did back in high school , and say , “ hello yourself , sleeping beauty . ” but it’s like being thrust right back into their high school hallway , where every glance , every accidental touch , every conversation between the two boys was charged with this … unspoken , playful , fun tension . “ though by the looks of those bags under your eyes , i’d say you could use a refill on that beauty sleep . ”

“ yeah , my hair’s always been this bright . you saying you forgot ? i mean , you used to have a pretty exclusive view . ” back then , it was a dangerous dance they did . a thrilling , risky routine that seemed to pull them in every time . and now , their recent interactions felt like slipping right back into those well - worn gloves . tae was always fun to kiss , always fun to be with , and felix misses that … misses that spontaneous , unbidden fun that seemed to come so easily with taejin . slow smirk spreads across lips , hand running through sun - kissed hair . “ oh yeah , the old ladies … let’s just say your mom keeps asking when i can come mow her lawn . ”

leans against the counter , grinning at the barista when she returns with their drinks . “ thanks . could we also get a croissant for my friend ? he had a bit of a pancake situation this morning . almost burned his kitchen down , ” laughs , handing over his card to pay for both drinks and the pastry . “ figured you’d need some real food and a bit of shame after that . maybe stick to cereal next time ? ”

stella likes to think she's decent at both her jobs, okay ? a decent actress, a decent pet sitter, and she's good with animals. still - when willow and choko get excited ... it's not like stella is buff and strong and known for controlling animals on a leash. choko just happens to know how to excite his older sister - and when choko gets excited, willow always follows suit. "choko, willow - guys, please!" the older doberman and chocolate lab seem to ignore their month, instead opting to pull the blonde through the sidewalks and she's so grateful she's not a HOLLYWOOD STAR ACTRESS just yet, considering the scene. girl is out of breath when the dogs stop, noting they were going towards a few other dogs on a walk, when she tilts her head up to catch a breath. "sorry, sorry," her southern drawl breathes out, stella shaking her head. "these guys are really excitable around here." ( @surglace )

felix can’t take his eyes off stella , so he doesn’t even try . smile tugging at lips as she is drawn closer , pulled along by her dogs towards him and his own . duke and daisy pull eagerly at their leashes , desperate to join the fun . but felix ? he stops their walk to lean against the old oak tree , the very old oak where he and stella had snuck so many kisses . gentle breeze teasing blonde hair , hand tucked into the pocket of brand - new chinos . he’s the picture of patience , of strength — the dogs’ pull barely makes him sway . but the hand in his pocket fidgets with a loose thread , and his heart beats a frantic rhythm .

you know , he knew this was coming . seeing stella again . seeing everyone , really — the friends , the exes , the wilders , even those guys he used to compete with . he’d expected to be composed , you see . friendly , but guarded . he’d reminded himself of what was at stake . but , expectations … expectations are fragile things . reality ? reality is raw , visceral . and now , stella winter is standing right there , right in front of him , and … well , reality has a way of knocking the wind right out of you .

“ don’t sweat it . duke’s no angel himself . these guys think they’re lapdogs , not the horses they are . ” hand reaches out to give duke’s side a hearty pat , but the great dane is too busy wrestling with stella’s dogs to care . he’s all floppy ears and wagging tail , bouncing around like a puppy . really , the whole scene was a chaotic mess of tangled leashes , tugging and happy barks . “ maybe we should set up a playdate . give us a break from the leash burns , let them tire each other out , and … you know , maybe even a chance for us to catch up … i mean , it’s been a while , right ? ”
