Today, let’s review some basic uses for Native and Sino number systems! Even though there isn’t too much Hangeul written above, it’s always good to build vocabulary. So, let’s learn some of the Korean terms for the English labels above!~

Basic Present Tense

If you are answering the question, the answer in English sentence form is “I am (pray)ing”. This is present progressive form. However, in Korean, it is also the rules applied to basic present tense (ie. “I pray”, “He prays”, “They pray”, etc). 

Rules:

✿ When the vowel of the syllable in front of ‘다’ is ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ (not 하), use ~아요

[놀다 - to play] ☛  놀아요. I am playing

[가다 - to go] ☛ 가아요 = 가요 I am going.

*For ease of pronunciation

[보다 - to watch/see/look] ☛ 보아요 = 봐요 I am watching.  

✿ If for other vowels, use ~어요

[쉬다 - to rest] ☛ 쉬어요. I am resting.

[먹다 - to eat] ☛ 먹어요. I am eating.     

[그리다 - to draw/paint]  ☛ 그리어요. I am drawing.  

[기다리다 - to wait]  ☛  기다리어요. I am waiting.  

[보이다 - to be seen] ☛  보이어요 = 보여요. I am seeing it. (It’s visible)    

[걷다 - to walk] ☛ 걷어요 . I am walking.

[웃다 - to laugh/smile]  ☛ 웃어요. I am laughing.   

✿ If the syllable is ‘하’, use ~여요  

But Koreans don’t usually say this and instead use “해요”

~해요 Used for describing movement of a subject

[요리하다 - to cook] ☛  요리하여요 = 요리해요. I am cooking.

[일하다 - to work] ☛ 일해요. I am working

[전화하다 - to call] ☛ 전화해요. I am calling.

[이야기하다 - to tell] ☛ (--랑) 이야기해요. I am talking (with--).

[공부하다 - to study] ☛  공부해요. I am studying.

[울다 - to cry] ☛ 울어요. I am crying.  

[기도하다 - to pray] ☛ 기도해요. I am praying.

Seasons in Korean

Season = 계절[kye-jeol] Spring = 봄[bom] Summer = 여름[yeo-reum] Autumn/Fall = 가을[ka-eul] Winter = 겨울[kyeo-ul]

* Korean Seasons Korea has four very distinct seasons with a very hot and humid summer and a cold and windy winter. The best time to travel to, and in, Korea according to most people is during spring and fall because of the weather.

Question 어느 계절을 좋아해요? [eo-neu kye-jeol-eul joh-a-hae-yo?] = Which season do you like?

answer 저는 여름을 좋아해요. [jeo-neun yeo-reum-eul joh-a-hae-yo.] = I like summer.

한 적이 있어 -- I’ve Done It

When you want to talk about having done something before, you can use ~(으)ㄴ 적이 있다. 적 means “experience,” so it literally translates to “I’ve had the experience.”

김치를 먹은 적이 있나요? – Have you eaten kimchi before? 한국에 간 적이 있는데 또 가고 싶어요. – I’ve been to Korea before and I want to go again. 게이사람을 만난 적이 없어? – Have you never met a gay person? 머리를 염색한 적이 없잖아요. – You know I’ve never dyed my hair.

A Few 받침 Pronunciation Rules

1. When the 받침 is followed by a ㅇ (silent), it’s carried over.

물은 is pronounced “무른" 꽃이 is pronounced “꼬치" 읽어 is pronounced “일거"

2. When the 받침 is at the end of the word or followed by a consonant, it softens. ㅂ/ㅍ –> “ㅂ", ㄷ/ㅌ/ㅅ/ㅆ/ㅈ/ㅊ –> “ㄷ", ㄱ/ㄲ/ㅋ –> ㄱ

앞 is pronounced “압" 옷 is pronounced “옫" 밖 is pronounced “박"

3. When the 받침 is followed by ㅁ/ㄴ, it may be pronounced differently. ㅂ/ㅍ –> “ㅁ", ㄷ/ㅌ/ㅅ/ㅆ/ㅈ/ㅊ –> “ㄴ", ㄱ/ㄲ/ㅋ –> ㅇ

꽃물 is pronounced “꼰물" 볶니 is pronounced “봉니" 앞만 is pronounced “암만"

4. When ㄴ is followed by ㄹ or visa versa, ㄴ is pronounced “ㄹ”.

연락 is pronounced “열락" 진리 is pronounced “질리" 달님 is pronounced “달림"

5. When two 받침 are at the end of the word or followed by a consonant, the 2nd is silent.

없다 is pronounced “업다" 읽자 is pronounced “일자" 여덟 is pronounced “여덜"

6. When ㄷ/ㅌ is followed by a vowel, it’s pronounced “ㅈ/ㅊ”.

해둗이 is pronounced “해두지" 붙여 is pronounced “부쳐" 끝이 is pronounced “끄치"

Particles Masterpost!

Particles come after the part of speech they’re indicating. Some of them (such as 은/는 or 이/가 or 의) are dropped when speaking in 반말, but they must be used when speaking in 존댓말.

은/는 – indicates the subject (who is doing the verb, what/who specifically are you talking about). Can also be used for comparison or emphasis.

오늘은 날씨가 아주 좋네요. – The weather’s so nice today. (compared to recent/other days)

을/를 – indicates the direct object (what is being acted upon).

난 아까 김밥을 먹었어요. – Earlier I ate kimbap.

이/가 – indicates the topic (clarifies the who/which/what). *Used in negative sentences!

커피가 좋은데 난 마시면 머리가 좀 아파요. – Coffee is nice/good but if I drink it my head hurts. 저는 미국 사람이 아니라 캐나다 사람이야. – I’m not American, I’m Canadian.

도 – ‘also,’ ‘even though.’ Can also be used for emphasis.

난 대학생이에요. 오빠도 대학생이죠. – I’m a college student. You’re also a college student, right? 아직도 안 시작했어? – You still haven’t started? 매워도, 엄청 맛있네. – Even though it’s spicy it’s really delicious.

께서 – honorific topic; can replace 은/는 or 이/가.

선생님께서 왔어요. – The teacher came.

에 – at/to (time or place); per (time).

학교에 가야 되지. – I have to go to school. 오후 3시에 집으로 돌아갈게. – I’ll return home at 3pm. 이 약을 하루에 2번 먹어요. – Take this medicine twice a day.

에서 – at (where the action happens); from.

미국에서 왔어. – I came from America. 인천공항에서 만나자. – Let’s meet at Incheon Airport.

부터 – from (time or place).

이비행기는 부산부터 제주도까지 가고 있어요. – This plane is going from Busan to Jeju Island. 오후 4시부터 공부했어. – I’ve been studying since 4pm. 그 학생은 나를 처음부터 싫어했어요. – That student hated me from the beginning.

까지 – all the way up to (time or place).

삶이 힘들어도 끝까지 보기 마세요. – Even though life is hard, don’t give up until the end. 머리부터 발끝까지 예뻐. – You’re pretty from head to toe. 4시까지 기다릴게. – I’ll wait until 4pm.

의 – possession. my, her, his, etc. *저 + 의 = 제,  나 + 의 = 내

그 학생의 가방은 멋있지. – That student’s bag is awesome. 오바마께서는 미국의 대통령이에요. – Obama is America’s president.

들 – plural.

여러분들 (everyone), 학생들 (students), 그들 (them), 애들 (kids)

만 – only (usually replaces 을/를).

어제 공부만 했어. – Yesterday all I did was study. 난 아침에 우유만 마셔요. – In the morning I only drink milk.

하고 / (이)랑 / 와/과 – and/with (between two nouns). (*와/과 is formal, 하고 is more informal, (이)랑 is more conversational)

저는 지난 주에 친구와 해변으로 갈 겁니다. – Next week I’m going to the beach with my friend. 엄마랑 셀카를 찍었어. – I took a selfie with mom. 김치하고 고추장을 사야 돼. – I have to buy kimchi and pepper paste.

(으)로 – by means of; in the direction of; asking for a favor.

인터넷으로 찾는 중이에요. – I’m looking on the internet. 산으로 갑시다. – Let’s go to the mountain. 그건 영어로 말해도 돼요? – May I say that in English? 창가 자리로 예약해 주실 수 있어요? – Can you reserve a window seat for me?

에게 / 한테 / 께 – to. (*에게 is polite, 한테 is more conversational, 께 is very respectful)

아버지는 언니한테 돈을 줬어. – Dad gave my sister money. 선생님에게 다 이야기해요. – I tell everything to the teacher.

에게서 / 한테서 / (으)로부터 – from. (*에게서 is polite, 한테서 is more conversational)

오늘은 내 생일인데 남자친구한테서 꽃다발을 받았어. – Today is my birthday and I got a bouquet from my boyfriend. 선생님에게서 많이 배웠어요. – I learned a lot from my teacher.

(이)나 – gives the impression of “good enough.” Replaces 이/가 or 을/를.

떡볶이 없어? 그럼 김밥이나 먹자. – There’s no spicy rice cakes? Then let’s just have kimbap. 시간이 있으면 커피나 한잔할까요? – If you have time, shall we get some coffee?

앞으로... Future Tense

There are four main ways to speak in the future tense, as in “going to.”

1) ~ㄹ/을 거예요. This is the most basic future tense form. However, it can also be used to mean “I think/I assume.” 다음 주에 토쿄에 갈 거예요. – Next week I’m going to Tokyo. 내일 엄마랑 김치전을 만들 거야. – Tomorrow I’m going to make kimchijeon with my mom. 이번 주말에 삼겹살을 먹을 거야. – This weekend I’m going to eat samgyeopsal. 그 여자는 가수일 거예요. – That woman is a singer (I think).

2) ~ㄹ/을게요. This has the same meaning of “going to,” but it tends to be used in the context of “I am about to right now.”  할머니, 도와 드릴게요. – Grandmother, I’ll help you. 아이스크림을 사줄게. – I’ll buy you ice cream. 지금 갈게요. 이따봐요! – I’m going now. See you soon! 너무 추워서 창문을 닫을게. – It’s so cold, I’m going to close the window.

3) ~겠다. This is used either to show determination or to indicate a guess or option. 더 열심히 공부하겠습니다. – I will study harder. 오늘은 일찍 잠을 자겠어요. – Today I’m going to go to sleep early. 재미있겠다! 부러워… – That sounds fun! I’m jealous…

4) ~ㄹ/을래요. This is used to mean “what do you think of” or “shall we?” It can also mean “I want to do ___; how’s that sound?” 수업 후에 중식을 먹을래요? – After class, shall we eat Chinese food? 이번 토요일에 쇼핑을 하러 명동에 같이 갈래? – This Saturday, want to go to Myeongdong together to shop? 불금인데 술을 마실래. – It’s Friday, let’s drink alcohol / I want to drink.
