What is Sustainable Seafood
There are many definitions out there, but we look to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, Sustainable Seafood Guide
WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD?
Put simply, 'sustainable seafood' is fish or shellfish that reaches our plates with minimal impact upon fish populations or the wider marine environment. It's not just the numbers of fish left in the ocean that matters, it's the way in which the fish are caught, the impact on the seafloor, other marine wildlife and how fishing affects the healthy and natural functioning of marine ecosystems.
Globally, we still have some way to go in achieving sustainable fisheries; poor management, lack of knowledge and the race to make a buck from fishing has led to overfishing and too high a burden on other ocean inhabitants. Bycatch, where species other than those being targeted for sale are caught up in fishing gear, kills hundreds of millions of animals every year, including unwanted fish, corals, turtles, dolphins and seabirds.
Fortunately, there is now growing demand for sustainable seafood - seafood caught or farmed responsibly, at fishing levels that allow fish stocks to maintain their populations and without jeopardising the ecosystem in which they live.
Sustainable seafood can be wild-caught or farmed in aquaculture. For wild-caught fish, sustainable seafood is generally sourced from fast-growing, highly productive species that are caught by methods which don't damage ocean habitats or catch large volumes of non-target species. Sustainably farmed seafood is usually grown in small, closed aquaculture systems that neither destroy coastal habitats, or depend on wild caught fisheries for feed.
Very few fisheries are actually certified as sustainable throughout the world. The uncomfortable truth is that fishing is taking a huge toll on our oceans. Our global marine wildlife is under pressure from overfishing, destructive fishing gear and poor aquaculture practices. Not only are modern fisheries removing many of the fish from the sea, but non-target marine wildlife and ocean habitats are being destroyed in the process.
Thankfully, consumer demand for sustainable, environmentally friendly fish products is beginning to create momentum for a change in the way our fisheries and managed and caught.
Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide helps you take the first steps on the journey of discovering sustainable seafood.

Press Release
The inaugural Hook & Vine Festival presented by Whitford (One of Torquay and Geelong’s leading Real Estate Agencies) is locked in for Saturday February 28th, 2015 at the beginning of the iconic great ocean road in Torquay. Coastal Event Management with the support of RACV, The Good Fish Project, the Surf Coast Shire and the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee will present a seafood and wine festival with a sustainable twist. Three local mums have come together to create a concept to support three great causes: Regional, Seasonal and Sustainable. The Hook & Vine Festival has also been created to support and showcase our great restaurants and wineries. We have some amazing food and wine venues on the Surf Coast which don’t attract as much promotion as other regions so it’s time to show off what these towns can create.
The sustainable seafood concept came about after realizing that whilst Torquay isn’t necessarily known for being a seafood town as such, that it is known for being passionate about the environment and in particular our surrounding coastlines. Choosing seasonal and sustainable seafood is about being aware of over farming and overfishing, and responsible practices. We wanted to show that you can still choose amazing seafood that protects the future of our oceans without compromising on taste. In the US there are at least 9 annual sustainable seafood events which all sell out, so it’s time that we took the message seriously in Australia too.
The Hook & Vine ambassador is Chef Guy Grossi who shares our passion for sustainable seafood. The event will be hosted by local personality Dale Vine (The Block, Getaway, and Postcards & Man Space). The festival will be held on the Torquay common in a picnic style atmosphere with local artists such as Michael Stangel and Imogen Brough (The Voice), Where’s Joss, Madhouse and Rockstar playing on the main stage. Local restaurants will set up pop up kitchens with a selection of grab food on offer, whilst brew houses and wineries join in the fun with themed and interactive stalls surrounding the perimeter. The Hook & Vine Festival won’t just be another market, our point of difference will be exceptional quality food and experiences. This is a family oriented event with unlimited access to the kid’s zone and live music all day, all enclosed in a secure gated arena.
The Hook &Vine Festival will stimulate ongoing economic and social benefits for the Surf Coast Shire and is looking forward to becoming the most anticipated event on the summer calendar for years to come. Head to our website or Facebook page for more information.
