My client is a young male working professional, he typically works from home as a software designer. I designed the space to meet his live/work needs and have the space not be transformable to give the traditional sense of home in this pint-sized condition.
Modular Rearrange Studio
Client Information:
My client is a female in an age of 32. She works at a women's clothing store as a shop manager. She is very active and merriment, also like to invite close friends to studio and spend time together. She is an entertaining person and has hobby of cooking and reading.
Client Lifestyle :
She works 12+hours a day from 9 am. She does not spend much time in her place and usually eat outside. She does not work in apartment but spend time with friends and use time for her hobbies. She does laundry very often and iron clothes everyday to give professional look as a shop manager.
Design Overview :
Bed needs to be use easily and hidden when friends come over. Therefore, this studio has bed hidden under living area platform. She does not work at apartment so she wanted small desk and shelving. So, folding wall idea was used in this reason. It can be use and remove easily and can be settle in a position at any time. As an entertaining space, it has projection screen for movies. Moreover, the folding wall panel has different appearance either outside or inside of the panel and gives different look in the space. For the often laundries, the laundry system was included in unit with iron pad nearby for convenient use. As a person working at a clothing store, she has lots of clothes, so large occupancy of storage was needed in the space. She has cooking as her hobby, therefore the studio has large kitchen on window side and the counter is extended to the outside the space which is connected to the terrace. This gives great moment of cooking enjoying days at the terrace.
Client:
The client is a 28 years old copywriter (usually writes copies for ADs and movies). She spends most of time outside, and likes to meet people outside. She likes watching movies and reading books.
Design Approach:
She wants an one-person simple studio with an open working space, so i put all hidden furniture with colorful reveals. I place a large magnetic white board for her working area, and i designed a lounge area to watch movies with movie projector. Since she gets bored easily in one place, i try to create variety modes in a micro studio, like desk mode, lounge mode, bed mode, and a big board. She wants to focus on living room and working area,so i minimize the size of kitchen and bathroom.

My client is mid 20's woman who owns yoga studio.
She teaches two yoga classes per day and spends most of time at the yoga studio. When she gets home, she practices yoga or reads books. She doesn't cook much so she usually eats outside.
This space can be used as a studio apartment and private yoga studio. All the furniture is placed on one side and mirrors are on the other side. She is able to slide all the furniture in and out of the bookshelves which allows the uses of the yoga studio. Also she can slide the furniture out and use it where she wants. Furniture components are chair,table,bed and closet.

Julian's Micro Apartment
The Client:
Young urban professional of the future.
Client Profile:
Spends much of their week working from an office and out enjoying everything the city has to offer. There desire is to come home to an interesting architectural space that they can show off. They do not want to have to move things around to create different areas.
Design:
The design for the Micro Apartment takes a 8' x 20' space with 18' ceiling heights and divides it into a dynamic multi level space for the client to come home to. Everything is built in, allowing for maximal storage and efficiency in every area.
My client is a young journalist always on the go. He needs a space that allows for a busy work week and still allows room for entertaining on the weekends. By designing space to transform at levels that are multi-functional for daily living, that can stay “out” of a closed position during the week, my client is able to use his apartment as a placed to recharge his battery. However when desired, he can transform the space to disguise daily functions and allow for a entertaining space that sophistication and drama.
This animation is to allow for a better understanding of the unique furniture created for the Rubix Apartment.
My client is a young working professional in his mid 20s, with a career in graphic design who works from his home office, and enjoys entertaining his friends in this adaptable space.
This work/live unit is adaptable to all needs. It has movable walls that transform this 27’x 12’x11’ unit into a variety of spaces including: a bedroom, private office, and entertaining space. During the day, you can create a full working office, with a reception desk, and private office for meetings, or simply a place to get work done. While at night it can become a spacious place for dinner parties.
MicroApt Jury
Thanks to David Friedlander of LifeEdited.com and Sean Karns of JPDA (Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture) who sat as jurors for our MicroApt presentations yesterday! We had a great afternoon of discussion about the projects and the larger issues around small footprint urban lifestyles in the near future and the role of designers in shaping patterns of living and social responsibility.
Micro Simplicity
The client i am designing for is a young working woman. Always on the go and out and about on the town. When spending time at her place she is looking foward to having a space to relax and get away from everyone and everything. My concept was more of a modern desing and hints of the Chippendale era. Both settled and conservative. Everything needed is within the space just less of it. Those spaces not used as much are more simple then the bedroom, but still are important and carefully designed.
Project 02: The Micro-Apartment: 21st Century Urban Living
A prototype for a 30 sq meter small footprint, sustainable living unit for New York City, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo.
A Global Imperative With the Earth’s population on track to peak at 9 billion by 2050 with nearly 70% expected to be living in cities by that time (UNFPA 2011), addressing how we design and live in cities is arguably one of the principal challenges and opportunities in addressing the sustainability of our planet.While long considered dirty, polluting and devastating to the environment, recent studies have shown cities to be highly effective in providing for low-carbon lifestyles. In the US for example, a typical New Yorker’s carbon footprint is 7.1 tons of CO2/year, or less than one third of the 23.92 tons produced by a typical American (Guardian 2009). This benefit comes from density and as our cities’ populations grow and boundaries expand into sprawl, those benefits are greatly reduced.
Local Developments
New York and San Francisco, with experimental changes in their zoning/codes, are looking forward at how to accommodate for their expected influx of residents in the coming years. Demographic studies indicate that a large majority of residents will be young, single, entrepreneurial and will be more likely to move more than before. Its been suggested that they will not require the amount of space mandated under current laws (min 400 sqft in NY) and would benefit from smaller spaces with lower costs/rents.
Project Overview
Your challenge is to design a prototype for a combined living/working space for the young, mobile, urban dweller of the 21st century in 320 sq ft. The unit will be part of a building with multiple units of a similar type. The design should reflect a response to speculation on changes to lifestyle and habitation choices of urbanites in the near future (c.2030), including life-work balance, socializing, public-privateness, etc...
Wind Bottleneck Effect
Phenomeonon : Wind Bottleneck Effect Phenomenon Installation
My phenomenon is Wind Bottleneck Effect. Wind Bottleneck Effect is a method that shows changes in pressure and velocity while wind travels between larger opening and narrower opening.
How this sculpture amplifies the Phenomenon :
This sculpture has a shape of concave curve that can create bottleneck effect. The middle part of the sculpture has the narrowest opening which makes the highest wind speed.
This installation is located in the position in direction of dominant wind direction to catches most of the wind on site.
One end of the sculpture has wind turbine fixture on the top that catches wind travels inside the sculpture. This wind turbine creates energy for the lighting system of this installation.
The other side of the sculpture is where people walk through and experiencing wind bottleneck effect. Inside the sculpture has LED lighting system that creates different ranges of colors which represents the changes in wind speed.
What people experience from this installation :
As people walk through the center of sculpture, speed of wind increases which creates different ranges of wind power. This makes people to feel the power of wind at different stages due to Beafort Scale. This sculpture is an interesting experimental installation for people to walk against wind that increase gradually.
My Phenomenon is the movement of waves and the potential they have to generate power. Wave power is defined as the transport of energy by ocean surface waves, and the capture if that energy to do useful work.
My installation amplifies this phenomenon by creating a surface on the water, that allows people to experience the movement of waves while observing the electricity it generates when the platforms light up. There is a bridge that leads you towards the installation surface which is made up of 10 (3’ x 3’) platforms attached together, that float on aero gel.
When people visit my installation, I want them to walk away with an experience and an understanding of the power waves can have in generating electricity.
WIND (Sounds created by wind)
Wind has power to push objects. When wind blows, hanging materials will move and hit each other then we could hear the sound of them.
I designed tunnel shape to gather winds in one strong direction, so wind creates sound more clearly. People can walk through it, and they can touch and create their own wind chime sound. Even though, there is no wind, people can hear the sound of wind chime by touching the glasses. I chose glass material for ornaments, because glass makes my imaginary wind sound, clear and fresh sound.
Actually it is hard to hear the natural sound of wind, so i try to convert the wind sound into audible sound through glass pieces. By the volume of the sound and the movement of the glass pieces, it is available to check out the speed and strength of the wind. When i hear the sound of wind chime, it makes me calm and relax, so i want to share this feeling with people. People in NYC live busy life everyday, so i want to design a place to feel the nature and the sound of it.

Phenomenon: Fear of Falling
Why does one feel like they are falling?
A combination of the phenomenon of Postural Sway and anxiety, as well as fluids in the Vestibular System (Found in the ear).
Goal:
To create the fear of falling in individuals walking across the bridge using a variety of influences attributed to the fear of falling.
Effect:
The suspension is lose, so it will be unstable triggering the vestibular system and postural sway. It is over the water, and the planks are glass, which will contribute to the anxiety which creates amplifies the feeling.
My phenomenon is sunlight. Especially, focus on changing angle/distance of sunlight during the day.
To amplify this phenomenon, I used camera obscura technique which is an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen. The device usually consists of a room with a hole in one side. Through the hole light from an external scene passes and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced with color preserved.
This installation has four different direction holes on the bottom which allow to let light and colors in from surrounding environment. This room has "snail" shape to reduce light from the entrance. Also it allows to let small amount of light in the space which gives direction to exit.
Through this installation, I want to make people experience the changing angle/distance of sunlight also aware of various colors from surrounding environment.

EXPERIMENT
Photosynthesis Bio-Fuels
The phenomenological process that allows algae to grow is photosynthesis in addition to H2O and CO2. Once the Algae is mature the lipids are then extracted to create algal oil. The use of mason jars with tubes allows for the algae to absorb CO2 without contamination from the surrounding world. The jars would be installed in increments starting from the center of the structure. Every few weeks more jars at the beginning of their growth would be attached centrality to the structure, so by the end of the two season instillation there would be a variety of green tones that come from the SUMmer Coaster. In my process I am not stating that algae is and will be the best Bio-Fuel, I just want to make people aware of different potentials that can be explored. I hope that when they leave this exhibit they are trying to create a new Bio-Fuel, making a “SUM” if you will.
