the thing about writing fantasy stories is that language is so based on history that it can be hard to decide how far suspension of disbelief can carry you word-choice wise - what do you call a french braid in a world with no france? can a queen ann neckline be described if there was no queen ann? where do you draw the line? can you use the word platonic if plato never existed? can you name a character chris in a land without christianity? can you even say ‘bungalow’ in a world where there was no indian language for the word to originate from? is there a single word in any language that doesn’t have a story behind it? to be accurate a fantasy story would be written in a fantasy language but who has the time for that

i am really sick of this “if you don’t disclose all these private things about you to every stranger on the internet, you must be cis, white, straight, able-bodied, and mentally healthy” mentality that tumblr has.

it’s like… despite what so many of us are working to subvert (sometimes the same people making assumptions, absurdly enough), you still have this mental image of that as the default state of humanity. and unless we state that we deviate from this false “norm”, it’s assumed that we fall under it.

and it’s making it so that people are forced into oversharing and oversharing becomes normal. you don’t have any right to know these things unless i really, truly am comfortable with/want to share them. not everyone is comfortable with disclosing the private details of their lives, and you seeing that desire for privacy, making assumptions, and attacking them is fucked up.

you wouldn’t expect someone you met at school to tell you all these things. you wouldn’t expect your sister’s boyfriend to tell you all these things. you don’t have a right to that knowledge, and being on the internet doesn’t change it.

こんな質問はこのブログに当てはまるかどうかわかんないけど今翻訳コンテストに参加している。翻訳される文章に「オカマ」って言葉が出てくるでもトンデモナくて翻訳の仕方が知らない。どうやって丁寧に英語にすればいいですか？

どうかな。。。私、「feminine or female presenting person who was assigned male at birth」を使えばいいんだと思うけど、それはなんか長すぎるんでしょう。。。

 フリーランス3年目ですが、翻訳・通訳をしている者です。 @shinbricks​ さんの役に立つたかどうかは分かりませんが、とりあえず私の認識をここにまとめておきます。 

私の印象でいきますと「オカマ」にはきれいな訳語はありません。結論から言いますと、どうしても文面に必要であるならば「okama」と直接英語表記し、必要あらば簡易な定義説明を添えるのが主流であると認識しております。

「オカマ」とはまず定義が曖昧であるとともに蔑称であるから扱いが難しいかと思われます。男性同性愛者（ゲイの方）のこと、女性的な性同一性障害者（トランスジェンダー、MtF等）、女装趣味のある男性、あるいは単に女性的な男性に対する蔑称として使われることがあります。「オカマ」の差別用語としての使用は現在批判・議論がなされていますが、とりあえず翻訳のコンテキストで一歩距離を置いて考えます。

「オカマ」のように、ターゲット言語できれいな訳語がなく、定義が曖昧、あるいは異なる使われ方が複数ある単語の場合、私はターゲット言語でそのまま表記してしまうのが適切だと思います。無論、文面で明らかな意味を持って使われていれば、その場合の使用法（コンテキスト）で訳語を選択しますが。

以下、英語でまとめておきます。

As I’ve noted in the Japanese above, I believe that there is no neat and tidy term for “okama” for the simple fact that there are many similar but distinct definitions and usages for the term that each produce differing English translations. 

“Okama” is a derogatory Japanese term used to refer to feminine men in general (attempts at reclaiming the term have been made by various groups), and sees use as a term referring to gay men (both masculine and feminine), transgender women (FtM, New Halfs, etc.), cross-dressing men (the old parlance would have been the term “transvestite”, but I understand that the term is falling out of favor), feminine men in general, and others.

Thus, the safest and least inaccurate general translation I can offer is to simply romanize the term as “okama”. However. If the usage of the term is distinct and contextually apparent in the Japanese source text (i.e. specifically or contextually referring to gay men, transgender women, etc.), then my personal preference would be to translate the term with that usage in mind.

In writing these paragraphs though, it does occur to me that the phrase “feminine men” that I literally just wrote down without thinking is a passable translation, if limited in scope and inaccurate without context.

*note that this information will likely be outdated in a week’s time (on 9/8), when Patch 2.0 of Destiny will be deployed in preparation for the launch of The Taken King on 9/15.
