kageyama tobio as your first love, all the way back in high school. it’s not too pretty, awkward kisses and sneaking around during school, but it’s real and that’s enough for you. he flushed hard when you showed up to his games with his jersey number on your back, but a smile rose on his face when he brushed off his team’s teasing comments. this relationship reminds you of good but nostalgic memories. it’s an innocent kind of love, but it’s not strong enough to last past the moment you receive your diploma.
suna rintarou as your college fling, the one who you told yourself you didn’t want to fall for. he told you he wasn’t looking for anything serious, and you believed him, because you also had bigger things to worry about than your romantic life. but when the kisses and heated touches started to morph into something more, an inkling of fear settled in your stomach, a fear of the intimacy you hadn’t known for a long time now. you spent a long time wondering whether or not to end it, but he decided for you; he disappeared from your life one day, and there were only unanswered calls and texts on your end.
miya atsumu as your first serious relationship, the one who you needed at the time. you were drawn to his confidence and passion during a time when you were so unsure of yourself and your future. he was fun, he was self-assured, and he was everything you needed to grow into your own skin. this relationship gave you the most lessons, and taught you what your priorities and necessities were. it also taught you that sometimes love isn’t enough, not when you’re so tired of being put second to atsumu’s true passion. it ends with a slammed apartment door, tears dripping onto the carpet that the two of you had picked out together.
kuroo tetsurou as the one who pieces you back together. you’re freshly graduated from college, still a little shaky on your feet, and he’s the perfect mix of stability and fun that you’d been looking for. it finally feels like you’ve found where you belong. when he starts asking for more, though, you can’t swallow down your fear of committing so early. he seems to know what he wants, and you start to question your own goals and desires. you’re still not sure what you really want, whether or not you’re capable or even worthy of this kind of love, so you run scared.
oikawa tooru as the one who should’ve been it. you’d truly thought you were ready to settle down, ready for something more serious, but the circumstances didn’t allow you such an experience. you’d known that dating someone like oikawa would be hard, but you’d been convinced you could handle it. he loved you sincerely, without judgment, but the cameras and the media tore down your confidence brick by brick. every rumor and every scandal only lead to more screaming matches at 3 in the morning, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t make you stay. oikawa never stops loving you, but he loves you enough to know you deserve better.
akaashi keiji as your endgame, the one who makes you wonder why you ever doubted yourself in the first place. you meet him when you’ve already established yourself, scoring the job you’ve been waiting for and living as comfortably as you can. it’s the perfect mix of spontaneity and domesticity for you. when he finally gets down on one knee and you splutter out a yes through your tears, you’re convinced there is nowhere else on earth you’d rather be. on the day of your wedding, adorned in pretty white lace, you smile to yourself, thinking about everything—no, everyone that’s lead you up to this moment, silently thanking them for what they’ve taught you.
then, you thank the one you’d learned to love along the way.
