★ “What’s the use if it’s only a distraction? I know once I’m finished, I’ll have to face reality again. If I want a short term distraction, all I need to do is sit down with my friend here for a bit.” She gestures to a large and nearly empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s, the cap remaining unskrewed for easier access.
“Temporary happiness is just what it is: Temporary. I want long term quiet, long term peace. I know these wishes are naive, sure, but I can’t help but yearn for it in times like these.”
She glances at the glass that Macen shields and pouts, swiping at it.
“Give that back! Witholdin’ that cup ain’t gonna help anyone.”
“Well, you’re right about it bein’ naive.”
Macen snickered when she reached over to grab at her glass and raised it up over his head. “Is that a threat? You don’t scare me, Allison. You're always gonna be the little girl in the frilly white dress to me.”
Still he eased the cup back down onto the counter and turned to pick up the whiskey bottle, bringing it over and pouring her a small (supervised) amount while he continued.
“My point stands. You gotta know how to manage it. Find temporary – healthier – solutions more often so it don’t become too much. That’s what everyone does, y’know, unless you’re livin’ in blissful ignorance. I don’t recommend that either.”

★ “I’m tired. Very tired.
Tired of all the bickerin’ and the yellin’, the fightin’ and the hollerin’…
Enough is enough, y’know? The news has constantly got me all worked up and it’s like it never stops. Someone said this, Someone responded to that… I wish everyone could just… settle down, is all.”
She takes another swig of whiskey, lazily slapping down the glass back onto the hardwood counter. The familiar stench of alcohol escapes her breath, tickling the noses of anyone near her.
“The bickerin’ and yellin’ is normal. Rough and tumble politics’re how it’s always been...you just gotta tune it out. Not with whiskey. Gimme that.”
He swipes the glass off the counter and holds it close to him protectively, other hand in his pocket.
“Don’t watch the news so much. Just cause you’re a state don’t mean you gotta pay attention to every little thing all the time. Why don’t you go up to the mountains for a weekend? Float down the Cahaba? I’ll even take you to one of ‘em cursed college football games if that’ll make you feel better for a few hours.”

“I felt bad about not goin’ to church regularly anymore ‘fore findin’ out they’ve started badgerin’ the masses for money and sendin’ invoices to them...”
Whatever. He isn’t Catholic, he can have his own service in his living room. ...if he cares to anytime soon, that is.

“I guess if I really don’t like the other team…I guess I just might like the adrenaline rush if anything.” He shrugged a bit. “Ah yea–it’s for some special conference I guess so that’s why I’m looking forward to it. We don’t typically play anyone that far south so…” He looked back up at him, “I wonder what a serious game between Toby and I would look like huh?”
“I don’t think Colin and I have faced off since the playoffs in 2013. In total the Falcons have played the Seahawks only, what, fifteen ‘er so times since ‘76? Yeah, for some reason we rarely play teams thataways.” He waved a hand dismissively, then laughed. “I don’t have to wonder too hard, ‘cause I can imagine if perfectly the first try. Both of you are so quick to get heated.”
“That’s what makes sports fun to watch…I’ve seen plenty of games where the score is so distanced that you know who is going to win by the beginning of the second quarter no doubt. Sports are much more exciting when it puts you on the edge of your seat…don’t you think?” He watched him fiddle with his hair, “You and I’ll will be going up against each other soon. That should be exciting.”
“I dunno, sometimes the comfort of knowin’ you’re definitely going to win is better than the anticipation of a close call. You don’t know what it’s like losing to Jackson.” He rolled his eyes, nearly cringing at the mere thought of having to hear his brother scream roll tide ever again. “It’s gonna be the Bulldogs and Jayhawks, right? Basketball?”
“Hey now– I was rooting for you too. You did really good with that comeback in the second quarter and that something to be proud of.” He let his hands drop from Macen’s hair. “I think about you too you know–you are my best friend after all.”
Macen blinked at the praise and immediately his cheeks flushed red, prompting him to look down at his shoes. “Oh, um- yeah, I guess the second half was pretty good...it was a close call in the end.” He pinched a piece of hair between his fingers. “You’re my best friend, too...”
He sighed when Macen leaned against him and wrapped his arms around him, letting his hands rest on the small of his back. “Only you could make something as depressing as a topic like that into something flirty, Macen.” He moved his hands up and grabs the sides of Macen’s head and ruffled his hair. “Even when you’re ‘dyin’ from loosin’ a football ball game you still manage to stay positive.”
Macen pouted when his hair was ruffled, knowing it was going to turn into a wild dandelion, but still laughed and carefully knocked their foreheads together. “I wasn’t actually dyin’, I just wasn’t gonna let Colin get all of your attention and rub that in my face, too.”
